Thanks for making these videos! You’ve inspired me to see more of the country and hit some “high points”. Just curious how you determine your routes and why you started in Indiana since you’re from Texas? It might be cool if you made a video explaining the order you chose to do your states in and why (being that I hope to start high pointing soon). And maybe include what your future order of states might be. I live in Columbus, Ohio...just 54 miles from my first high point. 😀 Trying to figure out where to go next. 🤔 Thanks again and good luck with the rest of your list! 👍🏼

I'm so glad to hear it! Our routes are really rather random, and based on efficiency more than anything else. When we first started, we focused more than anything else on finding somewhere we could do the most highpoints in the shortest time, which just so happened to be this route. We continued to follow this strategy of combining the most highpoints we possibly could during each trip as we went forward, which got us through basically all eastern states. Now that we have to deal with western states whose highpoints are more difficult and much further from one another, our routes will be much more intuitive and methodical. I wouldn't worry too much about starting in the right part of the country if aren't trying to do them as quickly as possible, just start from what is closest to you and go from there. Thanks for the video recommendation, I definitely might give that a shot! Best of luck with your highpoints!

@@grtshw Whitney is brutal due to the altitude and how rough the Mountaineer's route is. It's half the distance of the Whitney Trail, but it is lots of climbing boulders. King's Peak in UT is a 28 mile round trip, elevation never below 8,000'. It is very remote and just gorgeous.

I always thought what you are doing would be awesome. After I made a trip to Spruce Knob in West Virginia. The Hawaii and Alaska points would be a problem. Ohio's highest point is kind of a snoozer too. Near Bellfontaine. But the hills in Canaan Valley area in WV is beautiful. And there's a tower on the point to get even higher.. it's a heck of a view. I would go in late September or early October. Before all the leaves are done.... 😁

Prior to visiting the highest point of the Sunshine State, I had no idea of the confusion surrounding this highpoint. For me the confusion started with the fact that nothing at the highpoint uses the name Britton Hill - everything denoting the spot uses the name Lakewood Park. Within Lakewood Park there is a sizable granite marker as well as two separate signs pronouncing Lakewood Park as the highest point at 345 feet. Looking into this upon my return I found people who claim the granite marker isn’t at the highest point of the State, and others inferring the area hasn’t been officially surveyed by the United States Government. As well, some declare Britton Hill is located within Lakewood Park and others state Lakewood Park is located on Britton Hill. Also, no two sources seem to agree on the highpoints latitude and longitude coordinates. One source even claims the true highpoint is located 30 yards west-southwest of the granite marker which by my reckonings would place it inside the park’s public restroom. Further adding to the confusion are those trusting Digital Elevation Models with Lidar who go as far as claiming the highpoint is outside of the boundaries of Lakewood Park. To try and make sense out of all these contradictions I decided to simply turn to ACME Mapper 2.2 and see what I could figure out from a simple straightforward map. From the contour lines one can clearly pick out Britton Hill with a summit plateau of roughly a half mile in length by 257 yards wide -- by plateau I mean the area within the greatest elevation contour line of the hill (in this case that contour line denotes an elevation of 340 feet). On the southern end of the hill (but not all the way to the south), extending beyond the summit plateau width, is an area bordered by county highway 285 to the east and extending 400 yards west with a width of 225 yards constituting Lakewood Park -- marking it clear that Lakewood Park is located on Britton Hill (and not vice versa). As mentioned Lakewood Park is home to a thick granite highpoint marker roughly three and a half feet tall, with a not quite square cross-section two to two and a half feet in length. This marker is located one hundred or so steps from the parking lot and about 36 steps from the restroom. It seems to me that much of the forty-six acre plateau of Britton Hill, being very flat indeed, is at an elevation of 345 feet and as such the hill top does not contain a single pinnacle. So whether the location of the granite monument corresponds with an official United States Government survey or not I feel its location accurately denotes the highpoint and there is no reason to speculate about it. I really like the way Wikipedia states it, which coincides with what I learned from the map mentioned above. "The hill is located in northern Walton County near the town of Lakewood, Florida, just off County Road 285 about 2 miles (3.2 km) southeast of Florala, Alabama. A small park called Lakewood Park marks the high point and features a monument, trails, and an information board."

@@johnperic6860 The World Topo view on Acme Mapper labels two spots that seem to correspond with the two spots you mention. However their respective distances from the granite mark are slightly different then what you mention, and both are lower than 345 feet. The point SW (227.9°) is 96 meters (314.961 ft) from the granite highpoint marker and at an elevation of 344 ft and located at N 30.98583 W 86.28227, and the point NxNE (16.0°) is 179 m (587.27 ft) from the granite marker and at an elevation of 342 ft and located at N 30.98796 W 86.28100. The World Topo view includes the 344 ft elevation point within Lakewood Park, but shows the 342 ft spot to be outside the park. The so-called "map" view shows the location of the highpoint to be at the same location as the granite marker with an elevation of 105 m (344.488 ft) located at N 30.98641 W 86.28152. Of the three points I mention, the granite marker is the closest one to the 345 feet Florida claims to reach to. Here is the map I used: [mapper.acme.com/?ll=30.98796,-86.28100&z=17&t=T&marker0=30.98641%2C-86.28152%2Cbritton%20hill%20FL&marker1=30.98583%2C-86.28227%2C33.5%20km%20NxNW%20of%20DeFuniak%20Springs%20FL&marker2=30.98796%2C-86.28100%2C33.6%20km%20NxNW%20of%20DeFuniak%20Springs%20FL] . The other thing that seems to be lacking from Britton Hill is an official USGS marker. For me since we don't know which map, or mapping type, or mapping service is the most accurate I’m going to put my faith in the Granite Marker as the highpoint of Florida.

I found the highpointers bench on the hiking trail, but I didn't find anything with the name Britton Hill on it. No USGS marker around either. The big granite marker inscribed "Lakewood Park Florida's Highest Point, Elevation 345 ft" is definitely what everyone is calling Britton Hill though. It is sort of confusing as to what is Britton Hill, and why when at the highpoint everything is called Lakewood Park. Here is what I have concluded: Looking over this map [mapper.acme.com/?ll=30.97923,-86.27405&z=15&t=R&marker0=30.98641%2C-86.28152%2Cbritton%20hill%20FL] with Lakewood park marked, one can see the contour lines of Britton Hill. Which has made me realize Lakewood Park is located on Britton Hill (and not vice versa as some write ups allude). And as we all know Lakewood Park contains the granite highpoint marker (monument). Anyways, I found it confusing that highpoint literature calls it Britton Hill and everything at the highpoint calls it Lakewood Park, but this cleared it up for me - so maybe it will help others. Thanks! I really like the way Wikipedia states it, which coincides with what I learned from the map mentioned above. "The hill is located in northern Walton County near the town of Lakewood, Florida, just off County Road 285 about 2 miles (3.2 km) southeast of Florala, Alabama. A small park called Lakewood Park marks the high point and features a monument, trails, and an information board." I'd also be willing to bet there is a wide area on Britton Hill that is all at 345 feet, I don't think there is just a single point that reaches that elevation. Some claim the granite marker may not be the exact highpoint, but I say there isn't one exact spot, so the spot they picked for the marker being at 345 ft celebrates and marks the highpoint of Florida.
