Going Up The Devil’s River - Ep. 85 RAN Sailing

RAN Sailing

Күн бұрын

Finally we have some wind so we can sail! Next stop in Guna Yala is Mamaraga (Snug Harbor) where we meet Arquín and he shows us his wife’s pretty Molas. Then we make it to the gulf of Guna Yala and the island Narganá where we finally find internet. We check out Devil’s river next to the island and explore the Panamanian jungle.
This is the guide book we use: amzn.to/2HvilA9
We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us.

Btw Johan - that’s if it is not too late - if you pull out the leaking injector and take off the copper washer carefully - you can anneal it by heating it up to a cherry red temperature and then letting it cool naturally. This will make it soft and enable you to use it again. Be careful to examine the injector housing for signs of carbon and clean it as best you can without ‘dropping’ anything into the cylinder.

Since you guys seem to do a fair amount of shallow water exploring with your new Tender , have you looked in to any prop guards to protect your outboard motor / propeller damage. Also good for general safety. Just wondering if you have thought about using prop guard or had negative feedback from others about using them.

It's like Joseph Conrad sailing into the Heart of Darkness but in this case you discovered a peaceful setting but I have to say if it was me I would be a little nervous. When you have never grown up in a place and coach by adults as to how to avoid the dangers you don't really know what the true dangers are. It's like when I first arrived in the rural area in Swaziland, Africa where I was to work. There were lots of dangers including poisonous snakes, dangerous spiders, scorpions, dangerous dogs that didn't like mzungas (whit guys), crocodiles, wart hogs, etc. Fortunately for me a local lady, Make Dlamini became my adopted mother and she treated me like I was a young child who knew nothing about the environment I was living in. She taught me how to behave around snakes. One day I took her over to see the plot of land which had been provided for me where I was to build a two-room mud hut. Beside this plot of land there was a large ant hill, a circle of earth that was 8 metres in diameter and about 3 metres high with a tree on top. When I arrived with Make Dlamini at the site I ran to the top of the ant hill in my flip flop sandals. Make Dlamini shouted at me to get down from there because snakes liked to burrow in the holes in the ant hill. i nearly jumped off that ant hill in one big leap. I had second thoughts about building my hut next to a place that was right next to ant hill where it was likely that more than a couple of holes in the hill were occupied with deadly snakes. In the end I didn't build a home there. Not long after that decision was made someone was walking by that plot of land and saw a five metre black mamba traverse across the piece of land that would have been where my front door would have been as it made its way to a hole in the ant hill. I sometimes think around the world sailors should ask a few questions from some of the locals when they arrive in a new country or a new island to learn about potential dangers they should be aware of. I don't want to scare you but a little local advice can save you.

I have heard nothing but horror stories about San Blas and the Gulf coast of Panama... I wonder why ANY cruisers bother going there. I would think that a country that hosts the Panama canal, and charges such hefty fees for passage, wouldn't make this a more accommodating area for cruisers! It seems like most other costal countries in the Caribbean 'get it' why not Panama? The fact that charts are not accurate, and there are no provisions, seems like a deal killer for me! If I were crossing the canal, I would skip spending any time in Panama and just cross through the canal without spending any more time or money than absolutely necessary! I love your channel and your laid back, informative style. J & M, keep it up. I'm binge watching to catch up to current videos.
