So what I found out today actually aligns w/ my intuition. A 180 tire properly mounted will not fit on an Indian Scout Bobber. Repeat… WILL NOT FIT ON AN INDIAN SCOUT BOBBER. The proper wheel for a 180 tire is not 3.5 as in 16 x 3.5 (OEM) or even 4.5. For a 180 tire, proper fitment is a 5.5 wide wheel. When you install a 180 onto a 3.5 wide wheel you basically distort/increase the aspect ratio of the tire making it taller and more narrow which is why people are claiming that you can run a 180 on a Bobber. Improper fitment actually makes the tire a smidge narrower. Installing a 180 onto a 3.5 or 4.5 wide wheel can be done BUT you by some measure degrade the balance on the tire causing it to naturally dip into turns more aggressively… questionable performance. The ONLY way you can run a 180 wheel on a Scout Bobber with proper fitment is if you delete the rear fender which will allow you to run up to a 240 or if you do like I did and modify the OEM rear subframe to widen it by about a quarter inch. If I come off some kind of way it is because I just ruined the white wall on a brand new 180 thinking that it could be done based on vids like this and others. BTW, I can’t even find a local shop who would agree to put a 180 onto anything less than a 5.5 wide wheel for liability reasons. Nonetheless, word to the wise, go with a 170 tire on the rear which is significantly wider than the stock 150 but still will require a wider wheel (16 x 5.5).

Great comment. Cheers. Does sound like uoure saying its fine for 180 on 3.5 if you delete the fender though?
@travisking1223
@travisking1223 2 жыл бұрын
@@thomasglover3834 Even on a 5.5, you can run some 180s. The Dunlop Eagle Elite has a white wall that sits in top of the black rubber and not within the black rubber. Because of that the Eagle Elita actually measures @ 185.9 mm! That's just wide enough to cause it to rub the subframe. Some 180 actually measure as low as 178 mm. That's a whole 8 mm variance. I am certain the subframe on the Scout Bobber is exactly 180 mm wide. Correct that you can put any 180 on a 3.5 but then you compromise the performance of the tire/bike.

So well said. The 3.5” rim actually “pinches” the sidewall inward, which has the effect of causing the tread to become more rounded, inwardly. Stated differently, the outside edge of the tire is pulled closer to the inside. As you note, this does not allow for the tire to be as “relaxed” as it would on the proper size wheel/rim, thus being as wide as it normally would. Actually, even a tire as big as 200/60/16 tire will actually fit onto a 16” X 5.5-6.25” rim/wheel. A 180/60/16 tire will fit onto a 16” 4.50 - 5.5” rim/wheel according to a tire wheel chart that I have seen. However, as you note, the rear fender must be changed out in order to accommodate a tire this much wider. I have a Softail Slim and it will accommodate a 200 rear tire (with the proper rim/wheel) without any modifications other than installing a wider fender, so as not to have any tire rubbing against the stock fender. Whenever I can find the wheel that I want, I’m thinking of doing this. Of course with a wider fender. Cheers!

@@Shaken_AND_Stirred In the case of the Scout Bobber I actually had to grind down the rear subframe on the side the tire was rubbing by about a 1/4 inch. Although I know that doing so weakens the integrity of the subframe, I'm confident that it was only slightly. And I have ridden 2 up since w/ no issue. However at the same time I generally won't ride 2 up with anyone over 140 lbs. I've probably ridden 2 up less that 5 times since having modified the rear subframe.

I, like you, threw a 180 tire on the back (Dunlop 180/65 16B). I’ve also upgraded the rear suspension to the K-Tech Suspension Razor IV Rear Shocks. When I tested it out, I disappointingly discovered some damage to my tire’s whitewall (on both sides) because the white walls come into contact w/ the sides of the fender in the inner area where the light brackets are mounted. I am wondering if you ran into the same problem w/ the wheel coming into contact w/ the fender. I noticed you stuck w/ the OEM wheel which would seem to make the tire slightly more narrow than it might otherwise be. I upgraded to an RC Component wheel that’s slightly wider (16 x 5.5) which in turn would seem to allow the tire to spread very slightly. Any thoughts on how to remedy this? I am thinking that I could try to adjust the shocks to reduce the sage distance but the concern then is if I ride 2 up it’ll still cause that tire to come into contact w/ the rear fender.

The 180/65 has a profile of 117mm, the old 150/80 has a profile height of 120mm.Your new tyre is actually a lower tyre by 3mm, and will give less fuel economy and top speed ....(much better tyre though)

it isn't 180/ 65 By 16, It's actually 180/ 65 class B by 16. The B stands for the speed rating. B stands for no faster than 130 MPH. Also did you have any excessive pully and belt wear with a wider tire that wasn't designed for the bike? It's been 7 years just curious? Lean angles on Harley's and cruisers are not very good, this is why they have taller side walls. On super sports the walls are much more narrow allowing for a much deeper lean angle and is why a sport touring tire should never be put on a super sport for mileage reasons.
