Break out of the summer reading slump, step away from the stuffy prize winners, and indulge in a fantastic, page-turning, summer thriller. Anthony McCarten has got some writerly chops and delivers a fun romp - that doesn't warrant too much reflection. It's just a fun read.

I’ve been reading a few thrillers this summer too. Glad this is one you enjoyed. It’s a wonderful feeling when you can just enjoy a book. Rebecca is fantastic! Those covers though. 😊💙

I admit to having seen at least one or two beautiful versions of Rebecca, but I guess given the book is almost a century old, it's inevitably going to see its fair share of ugly covers. Really enjoying the experience so far - it's been too long since I read an "older classic" like Rebecca.

I've had a string of meh books and just remembered Shanghai Immortal yesterday. I bookmarked it before it came out and now it's two month old and I saw it in my local bookshop. Hoping for some fun adventure to spark my reading again.

From the Goodreads description: "Lady Jing is half-vampire, half-hulijing fox-spirit and all sasshole" Sounds like the perfect slump-breaking read! Wishing you luck on your adventure - slump begone!

Going Zero sounds very fun. I'm already imagining how I'd evade capture. I lucked into an old copy of Rebecca that has only an embossed "R" on the cover. I just started Crook Manifesto; crimes are afoot!

Just a month - I feel like I could do it but at the same time realize I am such a pampered little princess and old-man creature of habit that even the thought of being internet-free for that long might be a bit more than I can take.

@@ThePoptimist Yeah I can't decide if it's better to hide in plain sight in a city or hide out off the grid in the middle of nowhere. It's fun to think about!

Right?! Off-the-grid seems to make the most sense but I haven't truly camped for more than a 2 days. I think I'd miss indoor plumbing, hot showers, and a well made latte.

I have 5 of last years Booker unread and perhaps it will remain at that. Currently into 'The Covenant Of Water' (Abraham Verghese), a must read for anyone who enjoys long generational family stories . I've recently completed Anita Brooker's 'Hotel du Lac' and David Grann's 'Killers of the Flower Moon' ahead of Scorses's movie. Loved 'Rebecca' and have watched 2 movie adaptations, which were 'OK'.

That is some fine serious literature you're embarking on, and while I am tempted by tackling Brookner (or fellow Booker nominee Banville) I think I might stick around for some more genre after Rebecca. Just some distracting summer reads!

Just such a resolutely Canadian novel written by a poet - how can you go wrong? Loved Reproduction.

Rebecca was one of my mom's favorite books. I never read it until after she died, but when I did it felt like such a good connection to my mom. Every now and then I make some time to read a book I associate with her, like Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson, or anything by Rosamunde Pilcher. Gotta get those mo, vibes once in a while!

I just had a similar experience with Seven Deadly Wonders by Matthew Reilly. It was a fantastic adventure novel that was page turning and exciting. Some ridiculous moments, some plot holes that were glaring, but I still had the best time reading it! It was so much fun and I enjoyed the hell out of it. And then I found out it's a series! So I'm going to bust through those. I was also happy that it had quite a bit less misogyny than books in that spy/adventure/thriller genre usually have. I've discovered that I like a good adventure novel but am often turned off by misogyny and extremely detailed descriptions of various vehicles and weapons. A good fun novel is just as good for you as highbrow literature is.
@ThePoptimist
@ThePoptimist Жыл бұрын
100% - though I admit I've shied away from the Reilly's and Crichton's because they also tend to be chonkers page-wise. Going Zero gets in and out in just over 300 pages which is just the right amount of commitment. Still, there is something to be said for a healthy suspension of disbelief and just allowing yourself to be carried on by a good plot-driven adventure. I need more of those in my reading life I think!

The Rachel Incident by Caroline O’Donoghue Little Monsters by Adrienne Brodeur Kala by Colin Walsh Close to Home by Michael Magee The New Life by Tom Crewe Blackwater Lightship by Colm Toibin Have you read Deluge by Stephen Markley? It’s still my best book of 2023 ,so far. 🍀📖☘️📖📕📚☕️🇮🇪💐

Thanks I'll keep an eye out for Going Zero. NY Times today published that Musk has over 4500 satellites controlling a large portion of the world's internet. That may be bad, or it may be good.... I'm reading Guignol's Band by Céline and The Master and Margarita by Bulgokov, both are full of humor, wry wit, despair and sullen tragedy, bien sûr. I guess David Copperfield is my summer read though. It's fan-dang-good. And Greek Mathematical Thought And The Origin Of Algebra by Jacob Klein, eyes cream to me.

Which translation are you reading for The Master and Margarita? I read the P&V translation and wished I'd started with a different version. I still need to rectify the massive oversight of having read zero Dickens as of yet.

@@ThePoptimist Michael Glenny, 1967. I've read a half dozen Dickens's. It would be hard to go wrong. Hard Times, despite its stereotypy and polemical bent, has enticed me into two readings,and I'd read it again. Copperfield is the most endearing I've read by D. Great Expectations I enjoyed immensely. Bleak House is often heralded as his best book; I didn't finish it, I lost it on a bus, what I read was fantastic. A Tale of Two Cities is somber, serious, even sullen.

I like that you can't go wrong with Dickens, though given how much I enjoyed Demon Copperhead I think it most likely I'd start with the Copperfield.
