What I also love about this song is that it’s basically trolling all drummers on the planet because that intro/beginning is so hard to play.

That drum pattern is really weird, just try and follow the snare hits. Confuses the hell out of me. ;)

a little late but on that intro: "The polyrhythm section in this song is brilliant. If I may give a technical explanation (I didn't come up with it, I heard it in an interview of Mario Duplantier, the drummer). It has puzzled many drummers. If you look it up on the internet, the classical notation for the rhythm would give a cycle from 4/4 to 2/4 to 21/16. But this notation is not appropriate as it doesn't tell you what's really going on. It's easier to break it down into a 3-layer polyrhythm. It's played at 140 in sextuplets. The intro gives you the basic pattern: 1234 1234 1234 12 12 12 1234 1234 1234 12 12 When the song starts, the bell gives the 4/4 pulse on top of which the two other patterns will be overlaid. The trick Mario Duplantier is using is to alternate the right and left foot to start each group of notes : RLRL LRLR RLRL LR RL LR RLRL LRLR RLRL LR RL. Then he fills the blanks with the snare. I didn't do the math, but the ending result is a cycle that resolves each 54 bars or something like that. Crazy if you ask me."

if I were to visually represent the beat then its not too hard to follow ||:oooo-oooo-oooo-oo-oo-oo-oooo-oooo-oooo-oo-oo-:|| "||:" and ":||" are repeat symbols. each 'o' is a hit and each '-' is a pause. so its 3 groups of 4 hits followed by 3 groups of 2 hits, then 3 groups of 4 followed by 2 groups of 2. just repeat that a bunch. It's a very simple groove but its played over that straight and even low drum. then the cymbals when the guitars come in, and then the snare accents the last note in each group.

I'm pretty sure that art of ding is not about real death. Its more about let go of not importing things in life and start living a good life. On the other hand, Gojira recorded an album, Magma, while their mother became ill and eventually died. That happening can be hear in music and texts on that album. How about a Reaction on their song, Shooting start " Here is a commentary, Mario told of her mother and how she looked at it all with death. "Mario: She wasn't afraid of death. She always said, "Death is life." So life, death is the same. She always told me, "I'm afraid to leave, but I'm not afraid to die.""

Great reaction again. My favorite part of this song lyrically is "I'd rather travel light" ... Meaning to me "live life to it's fullest, leave everything on the table... don't carry any regrets to the grave". Everyone and their mother is going to tell you to react to "Flying Whales". Also a great song. I'd recommend "Born in Winter" though which is really a song with great lyrical content and shows the band experimenting with the sound in a different direction. Tool and Gojira are my two favorite bands and listening to you guys discuss these songs reminds me why :)

I believe the art of dying is about materialism and how it restricts our humanity aka eyes glued to the TV and feeling like we are driven by clockwork (computers and machinery) and the person being scared to leave it all behind when he dies and then coming to the realisation he's wasted his life and giving up his materialistic needs to travel light when passes passes on to the afterlife and finally being free of his restraints he built around himself. Gojira are so deep with their lyrics and if I'm not mistaken it might be slightly related to buddhism

Okay, so you two gained a subscriber for this reaction. Up to now the only reaction channel that has grabbed my viewership is LIV. I watched their review of it this song yesterday and it was my first time hearing it, and it hit me like a mack truck. Your reaction was in the sidebar, so I clicked. Your commentary made me cry so hard. I watched my father die, and the second Vin said he was picturing someone in a hospital bed dealing with their impending death, the song clicked. I had just thought "Ooh awesome song!" But once I heard your take it became one of, if not THE most poignant death metal songs I have ever heard. (And I listen to a LOT of death metal) Your interpretation, which I think hit the nail right on the head, earned you my subscription, and after seeing a few more of your videos, I am officially joining the community you two are building. I likely will be here every step of the way from here on. The conversation is what I am after. Music affects me like no one else I have ever met. I can't really listen to music around anyone but my husband because it affects me vicerally..goosebumps, tears, sobbing to the point of not being able to breathe, and not just when it's sad. Music that grabs, and overwhelms, me in the best way possible causes that reaction more often than not. I dissect music and lyrics as deeply as you two, no one else has done that with me, until LIV and now you guys. I can now talk about the excitement, and delve deep with a like minded community. Thank you!

"Neglected emotions leading to catastrophic voyage on the other side" I feel like this speaks to regret of issue left unaddressed while facing death. I remember reading about people who survived jumping off of the Golden Gate bridge, as they fall they are forced to face their problem and realize that they can be solved or overcome if they just hadn't jumped. Here someone is facing his death and all his regrets in life are making his transition to death that much more difficult. He didn't take the time to live while he had life left, now he has to deal with that as his life slips away.

This whole album uses death as a centric topic. What you said about reflection I feel like applies to the whole album. Once you get past how much pure sound this album throws at you, it really can make you think. It's alot to take in, but it offers alot to carry out. Ely hit the nail on the head with his explanation of The Art of Dying. Even the transition between this song and the next feels like it follows the death theme. This song has such a mellow outro that does remind me of "going to the light" so to speak. Very ethereal sound. Then it gets blasted by the hard beginning of Esoteric Surgery and going back into the same subject matter kinda makes the transition feel like the guy dyeing, going to the light, and going back through the same thing after rebirth. It's a repeating cycle. Oroborus.

YESS! the first 2 minutes or so are a bit strange on the first listen as its hard to find the groove. But once you're familiar with the song it's just fantastic. If you want some more melodious (but still heavy as hell) Gojira with not quite as harsh vocals, check out L'Enfant Sauvage off the album by the same name. It's the song that got me hooked on Gojira and I'd love to see a reaction/review for it!

Joe Peterson L'enfant Sauvage (The savage child) basically refers to, even if you are an adult there's still a part of "Savagery" inside of you like when you were kid. He wrote the song with the vision of a kid who would be raised outside of the society, far from technology, civilisation.. (You can see it on the cover of the album. The head represent the child, the tree the "savage/Tarzan" side and the town in the background for the civilisation. :))

If you liked the art of dying and heaviest matter in the universe i think you guys will also appreciate stranded and vacuity. You guys actually reflect on the lyrics well which is important with bands like these and interesting to some somebody outside the space so to speak

You can do a video for Guift of Guilt. I really like the music and it also has a good live video, I guess it was live in London. There is one major aspect of this band u r not really enjoying, and that is the drumming. The drummer is a beast, one of my fav drummer and watching him live can help u see and understand the talent and dedication he puts into the music. So next time plz listen and comment on the drumming too :)

Hey guys ! I'm a Gojira lover and i need to tell you that you MUST make a reaction video for Gojira : "Inward movement". Nobody (only maybe one guy did it) did it and with it you will discover what is an older song from the band and how Gojira is creative, heavy, different and awsome !!! Check it ! you won't regret, be sure of that !!!

Another great reaction! Gojira is a great band. My favorite albums of them are From Mars To Sirius, The Way Of All Flesh, L'Enfant Sauvage and Magma. Their earlier albums are pretty forgettable in my opinion. You guys should check out these albums if you want to get in Gojira music. These albums are very technical, groovy, and overall bad ass. Thank you for the awesome reaction!

Alright! this might be a little longwinded, but, other than vicariously enjoying my favorite bands through they eyes of new listeners, I have figured out why I enjoy watching these 2 so much. Back in the 90's and before, when someone got a new tape, or a new band, they would get some beers, and call up the crew to come listen to the new ... whatever! We would all sit, have some beers, and dissect what we just listened to. That is why I dig this so much... nostalgia for a time long past, and a tradition that died with stealing music from the internet. That is what this generation is missing out on, and that is what would fix this depressing era of music, where everything is a spitshined version of the same crap, over and over, ad naseum.. Spend some money, buy the album, and support the music scene, and maybe the melenials have a shot of putting together a decent music scene before you all turn 40 and have to listen to your grandparents music if you want to hear something good.

Gojira can be quite subjective, depending on what the listener thinks it means TO THEM, so no real understanding of the alliterative can really be taken off the table... I think when they say “traveling light”, I think they are trying to shed themselves of emotional burden or regrets so that their soul can travel lightly... I have to say, you two are quite insightful, and this was a real pleasure to watch, coming from a mid-40’s metalhead...I really think anyone who is new to, and critical of, metal is selling the genre short as it can be like any other genre: some have self-fulling wankery, some have mindless drivel, yet some have skilled musicianship, and many have intelligent, thought provoking lyrics and subject matter, no matter the subject or which side of the subject matter your opinion falls on...this was pretty refreshing! Kudos!

VinAndSori I have been looking for a KZbin channel that has depth to it's content. You guys bring to my mind the truth that people need to meditate on. That is the finality of death. My mother tells me stories of when she used to nurse elderly people. She would be attending patients one moment. My mother would turn around for a second and then she would turn back around and the next thing she knew was the person was dead. Our days are numbered indeed and when people die they have to face God in what the Roman Catholic calls a "particular judgement". Our lives determine either our salvation or damnation. People get uncomfortable hearing the truth, but we all die. People that are nihilist or atheist don't acknowledge eternity, but eternity does exist. I compare eternity to air. Just because we can't see air doesn't change the fact that air does exist. Believing in the supernatural realm is a matter of faith. Faith is what makes us different than the animals. Human beings possess a soul which is comprised up of three facets. The soul contains our intellect, will, and emotions. Human beings possess the ability to reason. Animals live on instinct and that is all they possess. I thank God everyday that I have a simple faith. I hope you guys keep posting your awesome videos and keep up the excellent work.

VinAndSori thanks for the reply. I was just posting that comment for not just you guys to read, but for others as well. I have listened to Heavy Metal for well over 13 years now. I have always been a metal head for years. I stopped listening to Heavy Metal for awhile, but one just doesn't flip off their music upbringing. I as a drummer have always been fascinated with rhythm and melody. I think of music in terms of rhythm and melody. You guys have made me focus on lyrics now more than ever. Heavy Metal has a lot of metaphors and that is why people don't understand Heavy Metal. When I was growing up I just listened to music to help me deal with hard times in my life. Now I realize that what people that are older than me mean by understanding things in life. I believe that even though I am 28 years old there are still things at my age that I am still not able to understand. I look at the Bible and the Cathecism of the Catholic Church and realize that life is a never ending journey. I think back to earlier points in my life when I read the Bible and I would say "What does that have to do with me?" That was over 2,000 years ago this is a different age. Life is weird and surreal in a lot of ways. I just love that there are more musicians who are not afraid to push the envelope in terms of music contributions. Because music preferences are so wide what I like someone else may hate. That is the absolute beauty of music. Thanks guys and keep up the awesome work.

Gojira never fails to deliver the whole package: groove, heaviness, diversity, dynamics and deep lyrics to dwelve into. : ) Joe and Mario are living in NY, where they have their own studio called Silver Cord (www.silvercordstudio.com/ ). There's a contact line on the site. I'm sure Joe and Mario would have no problem spending those minutes talking to you. They're very humble and down to earth people. : ) I'm curious about one thing: why are your videos inverted? It's starting to creep me out a bit.
