Hello Sensei (plural;). I’m always happy to see the combination of the teaching and the “ on screen editing”, thus explaining in further detail the ideas/concepts that your Dojo is trying to purvey. Plus the humor and humility are ALWAYS appreciated! I realize that it is also healthy to address “ occasional elephants” that appear in the Dojo ( or in the comment section;) from time to time (eg:mask wearing), and that approach is appreciated as well. Lastly...with the attitude your Dojo displays regarding that there is generally something to learn and appreciate from all karate styles ( or many), I’m happy to see that you embrace this philosophy whole -heartedly;). Have a great weekend... Fridays are even better now;)! Take care!

Each response from you is a delight to read - your sincere and informed support of what we do really reaffirms that we are on the right track, and that the content we create is valuable and appreciated by others. This weird obsession with martial arts fundamentalism (no art but my art!) is such a modern thing. Anyone who reads even one biography of any old karate master will see that they encouraged learning whatever possible from any teacher. We try to continue this spirit in our dojo and on KZbin 🙇🏻‍♀️ No trolls in the comments yet - maybe they just didn't like seeing women covering their faces 🤔

Wonderful video about Sanseru basic bunkai - it is very orthodox and classical as Jundokan lineage goes, with some nice variations added here and there. Thoroughly enjoyed watching the good, solid karate you demonstrated in there.

Ché's history is always honoured in his bunkai - it's like cutting through a rock lengthwise and discovering a whole bunch of strata, with all the knowledge of his instructors over nearly 40 years of training fossilized. Glad that it is noticed and appreciated by a conniseur of karate 🥋

I am very happy to have found this channel and I'd like to thank you for the great content. I have been practicing Gōjū Ryu in the Italian branch of the same school (or at least we used to belong to the same school back in the day) and these videos are a great refresher for Kata bunkai now that I live in Scotland and can't train with other people for now. Thanks again, subscribed as soon as I say how good your body mechanics are!

Great video and information, thank you! The version of Sanseru that I’ve learned is the double mae tobi keri. I’ve struggled to understand why the double jump kick if we just took them down to the ground the move before by grabbing the ankle and pressing against the knee. Would you have any suggestions on why the sequence goes that way?

@@GojuRyuKarateCentre I come from the Sensei Masaaki Ikemiyagi lineage. Our school was taught Goju Ryu by one of his students. My understanding is that it’s a Meibukan style. Thank you for looking into my question, and as always I really appreciate your content.
@matthews1082
@matthews1082 3 жыл бұрын
@@Nailed92 Hi, this version of Sanseru with the double jump kicks belongs to an earlier version of Sanseru, and you can find it in other styles such as Shitoryu and Toón ryu who claim lineage from Kanryo Higaonna Sensei. The Meibukan founder, Meitoku Yagi Sensei was an early student of Chojun Miyagi Sensei and one presumes that at the time of learning his karate from Miyagi Sensei, this move had not been altered by Miyagi Sensei himself, hence its existence within the Goju-ryu system. A similar version can be seen in Goju-schools descended from Seiko Higa sensei - Seiko Higa was a relative of, and a junior student of Kanryo Higaonna, who later moved on to train under Chojun Miyagi Sensei before leaving to make it on his own in Saipan. If you observe this version of the kata carefully, you will notice that first there is the downward cross-block at a long low stance, which is to deal with a kick - it is followed by the cross-block at face-level (In some cases) or Chest level (in other cases) - presumably to intercept a punch, followed by the jump kick. So, what if the lower cross-block were to miss? What if the attacker feigned with a swift kick but quickly followed with a punch to the face (a very common thing to do) - you've blocked downwards with both hands, and almost instinctively you'd raise both your hands to cover your exposed face - both hands are not in the position to counter-punch (and you probably are not in the posture to dodge the punch, especially from a long low stance) - HENCE the jumping kicks counter-attack. If the block and takedown against the kick works, then great you have nothing to worry about - but if you miss on the catching of the foot - there's this upward double parry followed by double kicks as a back-up plan to fall back on, or in later versions by Miyagi sensei - no upward block at all - just proceed to jump kicks directly - and finally - don't jump at all, just kick him in the groin ( the first kick is supposed to be aimed at the groin). I hope this makes sense to you.

@@GojuRyuKarateCentre If you remember our discussion about Saneru (36) as a precursor to Suparimpei (108=3x36) and the similarity in the beginning and ending of both katas? This earlier version of Sanseru has this double jumping kick, which is also found only in Suparimpei. It's not so apparent in many Goju-Ryu systems because it had been edited out by Chojun Miyagi Sensei, but there it is in other styles who preserved it, another unique link between these 2 katas.

Oh- One other “ comment”: the double blocks in Sanseru.... we apply that in our Dojo as a basic redirect, (the open hands, at least) and then into a scoop of that same leg, to unbalance, and /or throw. Does your Dojo ever apply that movement in your basic bunkai? Btw, I continue to appreciate your explanation that “basics” vs “applied/realistic “ bunkai are two different animals. Thank you again:).
@GojuRyuKarateCentre

We love a good scoop and throw, but it tends to shade more into advanced than basic, as kata garama is tricky at the best of times to do well (and safely for uke!) We're putting our mats back down later in the year - hopefully we will showcase more throws then 😉 Always appreciate your time, Mark!
