Gokceada Sirinkoy Documentary - Sirinkoy Village: The Future of Gokceada

Sirinkoy, located at the west end of Turkey’s largest island Gokceada, is a fairly new rural village established by the government and holds great potential for the future of the island. This 22 mins long documentary is a by-product of the Ozu Gokceada Design Workshops which have been carried out since 2014 by the OzU Istanbul Institute of Design (İID), a design institute founded by the Ozyegin University / Architecture and Design Faculty members.
Sirinkoy documentary was shot during a Video Ethnography Workshop in June 2017 under the supervision of two faculty members and contribution of five students from different universities in Turkey.
Film portrays the story of the village, with its socio-economic cultural framework and futuristic visions through the eyes of the local citizens.
Designing on the Spot: Ozyegin University Gokceada Workshops
Since 2014, ÖzÜ/İID is conducting the most comprehensive social design initiative in Turkey. The workshop series takes place every summer in Gökçeada, an island community in Aegean Sea. The workshops aim to utilize creative and innovative design management in order to address local, social, and economical problems. The ultimate goal is to contribute to island’s sustainable and environmental-friendly development process. Through community involvement, participants propose value-added products and services based on Gökçeada’s cultural and natural resources.
Students, scholars and designers from all around the world participate in this annual event. In addition to students and scholars from Özyeğin University, students from Istanbul Technical University, Anadolu University, Dokuz Eylül University, Atılım University, İzmir Institute of Technology, İzmir University of Economics, and Yaşar University, and scholars University of Edinburgh, MHKM-Munich, and Izmir University of Economics participated in former workshops.
ÖzÜ / Istanbul Institute of Design is the Turkish hub of the international design research and education communities and the local design research, practice and education center in Istanbul. ÖzÜ/İID offers master’s (MArch/ MSc) and doctoral (PhD) degrees in design and architecture. Since 2014, the institute serves as a venue for scholars and students to conduct research on theory, technology, methodology, management, strategy, history and culture in relation to design and architecture.
