Why aren’t they well known? Well, most of the titles stayed in Japan is a major cause, even Matrimelee, arguably the most well known title in the series, only saw overseas release on arcade and on the Neo Geo.....which about 100 people own in total. Also didn't help that the PS2 version was Japan only, given how region locking was a pain in the ass to deal with back then.

Despite the recent trend of retro 2d rereleases in the fg genre (in Capcom, SNK, Arc Systems, etc) i think the problem with this game to return in a retro rerelease is that Atlus must think it's too bizarre for this generation. Like it was bizarre even for the 90s gaming scene, and the 90s were wild. We live in times that are less receptive to this kind of game. Like think about how every classic game is trying to look more serious than they were in the 90s. The own community nowadays is less receptive to larger levels of humor too. In SF many people were mad about Dan getting in SF5, in TK people are mad that roster slots of new games still are "wasted" with jokes like the animal chars, in MK there were even some people mad about the "wasted" time and budget put in extras like Friendships that "break the game's feel".

@@carlosaugusto9821 Great comment and 100% true. And another huge reason people are less receptive to wacky fighting games is due to the insane feminisation of the games industry (and gamers) over the last decade. This has created a generation of ultra soft, ultra triggered beta males and angry girls. Can you imagine if a fighting game came out now with a character like Mudman from World Heroes? Or if there was a creepy transvestite style character, or an African tribal character? No chance it would be made.

Yea this game is extremely interesting, but also quite ironic that you felt the characters are original. This series is actually a tongue in cheek collection of references to the most iconic characters in Japanese culture, from this grandma based on Yubaba from Spirited away, literal Card Captor Sakura, all the way back to ancient myths like Kintaro. These characters felt "original" to you not because they are actually original, but because they are icons polished to perfection over years.
