Actually, he is relevant. This (so far) seems to be a story about him training with his dad. So, that makes him relevant. I have a feeling they won't be fighting some big baddie in this. I'd be surprised if they do.

I believe goten has great potential. Training with his peer trunks is standard for him. But training with Gohan, Goku, (maybe Vegeta), Piccolo, Mr. Popo, etc will improve him exponentially.

Gotenks only learned Super Saiyan 3 because Goten and Trunks watched Goku reach the form. So technically Goku got the form first.

Goten and Trunks have the most potential maybe besides Gohan out of the Z squad. They were the youngest SS in Dragoball it wouldn’t or shouldn’t be to had for them to ascend. However we may not see that ever from the actual series.
