Goku didn't have much control over SS at this point. Goku gave a chance to Frieza so he didn't have to kill him. But he didn't take it, both of them knew Frieza would end up dying to Goku, but even then, he chose his pride over his life. Which showed how little he actually valued life, both his own and others'. You can literally see Goku's emotions on his face in the video, it's the conflict in his mind of having someone's death on his own hands and knowing that he has to do it because that's the only way Frieza will stop killing. It enraged Goku enough to trigger a second transformation.

The way Goku's personality changes after he transformed the first time sent chills up my spine when I was watching this as a kid (and it still does). He had always been carefree and light-hearted even since Dragon Ball, and although he could be very stoic and determined at times, he never really lost his temper entirely. Watching him struggling to hold on to that side of himself is my favorite thing in all of anime.

Frieza’s progression as a character was one of the things Super did very, very right. He’s a rare example of a villain going through a positive change arc without improving at a moral level. Agreed. And that was because goku vs frieza was originally supposed to be the last fight in dbz. Eventually came the android saga, and more super saiyans will be Introduced to the story line, albeit less dramatic transformations. I'm guessing this is due to budgeting and time constraints. I believe they're biggest mistake was giving the main characters too much spotligh,, and that's what led to ssj eventually becoming mundane. Dbs repeats this same mistake.

I'm not American, so I didn't grow up with this dub, only later through games and KZbin I got used to it, and I know how important it is for the DB franchise. Gotta say though, the writing was very good since the beginning, but you can clearly hear how the voice actors have improved and matured through the years, I mean, in this clip Sean's acting performance wasn't really one of his bests, even if the lines themselves were cool af 😂

I disagree. I think this was his best work for DBZ. I think Sean 'over-acts' in the later dubs. It was a little TOO much most of the time. In the original funi it was the perfect amount of intensity.
