This episode shows a detail that people often don't notice when they criticize Goku for supposedly only using "stolen" techniques. Not only is the fact that he can copy them effortlessly the second he sees them an impressive talent, he also has the creativity to build upon them and make his own variations.

@@alexanderren1097Toriyama didn't even conceive of the space alien warrior twist until the franchise had to take a new course for fresh content. He based Goku on Sun Wukong from Journey to the West. So he likely wasn't a normal human but Goku wasn't an alien with ever increasing transformations when Toriyama started Dragon Ball.

If you go to the trouble of calling yourself Jackie Chun you need to do the Drunken Master technique sometime. I love that Goku counters with the full Wukong. Whis and Roshi need to get together and complain about Goku letting down his guard.

Goku wasn't taught to fight by his grandpa, he was taught to observe and learn from his opponents. I think it has something to do with biology which allows him to feel the energy of a technique and replicate it. This is a really good arc can't wait to see your reaction to how the fight ends.
@damonestephens8722
@damonestephens8722 Жыл бұрын
Yes he was. He even says he was. Goku was taught to fight by his grandpa. Grandpa Gohan taught him martial arts and certain techniques. Now him being able to copy techniques is just something unique to him. Because not even other Saiyans can learn as effortless as he does. Now his saiyan biology is what makes him really strong and very durable. He was taught more to observe and learn from korin and master roshi and master roshi also taught him how to condition his body to get the most out of it.
@jessecortez9449
@jessecortez9449 Жыл бұрын
@@damonestephens8722Goku didn't have Saiyan biology at this point because Toriyama hadn't even conceived of some space alien warrior nonsense until the franchise needed a twist for new content. Goku is based on Sun Wukong from Journey to the West whom did have an ability to quickly learn new skills.

@@jessecortez9449 that only Negates one point in terms of how strong and durable He is. Plus he definitely wasn’t human because some of the feats he was doing. All my other points still stand. His grandpa taught him how to fight. Him being a natural at things and picking up things is something he just knows. Basically a natural prodigy. But korin helped him hone those skills when goku was trying to get the water from him. On how to observe someone and how to control his movements as well. And roshi conditioned his body.
@SnowyWolborg
@SnowyWolborg 9 ай бұрын
@@jessecortez9449 A lot of people, even fans of the franchise don't know that during the original series, Goku was not yet considered an alien, but rather himself as well as many others in the series were references to East Asian mythology, particularly the Journey to the West.

“Danger is the nosy next-door neighbor of security”, damnit Roshi has got some incredibly wise quotes in OG Dragonball. He reminds me so much of my own sensei from when I was a kid. Also Drunken Boxing is a real life style of kung fu, and the stance is to hold your index finger and thumb out and curved like you’re holding a sake cup.

As far as Roshi's prime, you get to see bits of his past and his Master (Master Mutaito) later in the series (mostly during the Demon King Piccolo arc). Some of his "psychic" abilities are probably related to his older sister. We meet her later in the series, so I'll just leave it there. With Goku's ability to replicate techniques, its kind of a Saiyan thing (at least in Z). That's why Vegeta can just sense energy after a day on Earth where everyone is doing it. For more background, Sun Wukong of "Journey to the West" has some of that ability, too.

3:35 Actually, that's an error in translation. In the original Japanese manga, all Roshi said was that Goku couldn't do a Kamehameha wave half as good as he could. In other words, the tiny wave Goku did at Fire Mountain wasn't strong enough to propel him like a rocket like a full-powered one can.

People who never watched chinese kungfu movie never realized this fight sequence was homage to old Jackie Chan/Chinese kungfu movies. Akira Toriyama was fans of Jackie Chan. Moves like Drunken Fist, Monkey Technique, (insert any animal here) technique is common moves in classic Chinese kungfu movies. It's kind of silly that this animal moves was kind of like rock-paper-scissor. Example Cat moves usually beaten by dog moves, or snake moves beaten by eagle moves. But sometimes we get to see some incredible creative fight choreography in this genre of movies 😁

I think Roshi is toying with Goku the entire time, trying to gauge how strong he is and how far he progressed so far. But he lets himself enjoy the experience, acting goofy, showing off, allowing himself to get prideful or frustrated, but the entire time holding back enough to give goku the chance to adapt and learn from the experience.

The Crazy Monkey technique Goku uses is not the only animal style he knows from before fighting Jackie Chun: in the manga, just after Goku runs away from him, he uses first the "Mad Dog technique", where he runs on all fours towards the foe displaying feral fangs and barking angrily as if he were to take a piece of him. It was a pretty scary scene, I wonder if that's the reason it didn't make it to the anime

I just realize that we don't really get another Goku training arc until Goku trains with Mr. Popo. I mean, you have the red ribbon army arc which is another adventure. You have some training with Korin during that. You have the Fortuneteller Baba which is a tournament. You have a second World tournament arc no real training. King Piccolo arc, which is another adventure arc, but this time Goku wants revenge. The the Piccolo Jr. Arc, where Goku trains with Popo and Kami. Even then it's kinda short. Next is Goku trains with King Kai, then Goku trains on a spaceship, Goku prepairs for the aneroids, then Cell, then other world, then with the Supreme Kai, then Beerus. None of them are as interesting as when Goku trains with Master Roshi.

It's not that Goku wouldn't fight, it's that he wouldn't continue to strive and better himself at the level he eventually did. Today's Dragonball is all about increasing power levels being a given, but back then it had more of a philosophy, where pride is a downfall and kid Goku assuming he's the strongest would mean there's no point in trying to better himself, similar to Gohan after he beat Cell Toriyama later retconned that drive as a pure Saiyan trait but honestly that just makes Goku less unique with more pure Saiyans added as the story goes on. But even following that logic in-universe, Goku pushed himself farther than any other Saiyan had before, because of the philosophy Roshi instilled in him as a kid
@SnowyWolborg
@SnowyWolborg 9 ай бұрын
@@migueldominguez78 That's exactly what it is. A lot of people forget that Goku was not originally conceived to be from an alien warrior race that has an inherent desire to fight. As of this particular point in the series, Goku is still starting out, and Roshi wants Goku to understand that there are still horizons he hasn't reached. DB and modern DBZ are almost completely different series, both in tone, scale, and mindset.
