Teech not sleeping is actually a call back to what Luffy said way back on drum island when Nami was sick. He was talking to Sanji about people from winter countries never sleeping a day in their lives although Sanji thought Luffy was talking nonsense, guess Luffy heard it from Shanks

Roger pirates had to take the long route to even figure out things related to Onepiece. They were exploring unknown territory and didn't even know what they were looking for. The pirates that came after Roger's execution at least had some info or a name (Onepiece) to call the treasure. Roger walked so Luffy could run. This also puts into perspective what Whitebeard said before his death. Roger told him the whole story and that's probably why he waited for the prophecy and thought Ace was the chosen one and decided to mentor him for his role in the future. Whitebeard never had any interest in the Onepiece anyway and he wouldn't have been able to do anything before the "time of the dawn". He realized at the end that the guy Roger told him about was Luffy, not Ace and made sure that he survived Marineford to fulfill that role in the future to bring the "dawn" of the world.
