You are THE MAN for posting this video. This is without a doubt the best acapella album since recording was invented. I'm so glad I have a copy. The only thing that could be better would be to have a video of them recording it in the studio or even maybe performing it live. I saw them do this song live at their last homecoming where this lineup was together. It was AWESOME!

@NotSoNewJesus Oh, and I forgot to mention, I asked Tim this AFTER I posted this question, just so you know. And if you're interested, there is a recent version of One Scarred Hand by Gold City up on youtube. It's a capella and they don't use microphones, either! His voice sounds like it's filling the room most of the time, and even though the quality of the video makes the sounds jumbled up, you can still hear the sound when he hits the low notes.
@GamingDrummer8913 жыл бұрын
@NotSoNewJesus Thanks! Yeah you're actually around the right spot. Gold City did 3 concerts in California and I went to one of them. I asked Tim himself about this afterwards and he told me that while he doesn't really do anything without microphones, he said that probably around Bb1 or so is as low as he can get while still retaining good volume.

@jandcgr Thanks! That's cool you got to travel with them. I actually got to meet them after a concert a few months back when they came to California, and I asked him this question. He said he estimates probably around Bb1 or so is the lowest he could project with good volume. Some of the tone in his voice is less noticeable after around A or Ab1 (you can tell by listening), but he told me he doesn't use vocal fry (which you can also tell by listening) and that his lowest is about an Eb1.

Something to take note of...right off the bat I know these guys were immensely talented, but I noticed a couple of things: First the starting pitches sounded like they were played in a recording as you see the piano player try to act like he's playing but wasn't ready and then the lowest note is played without his left hand being there. Next, it sounded like there were more than 4 guys singing...it sounded like 8-12. To be sure they were singing, but it's apparent that they were trying to sing with the track and were off with it slightly at times.(Look at 0:55 on the word "Lord" for example) I've heard them do this when it's just them and not them live with a track of themselves and it's better with only the 4 of them.

the piano player wasn't playing at all tjey were singing acapella

@@donalexander4083 With all due respect I’m not sure you understood what I was saying. Of course it was “a cappella” but I was referring to the starting pitches that was supposedly played by the piano player but if you watch he didn’t actually play it. He seemed to forget until the pitches were played on a recording track and then he tried to play it off but it was too late. Then look at 0:55 on the word “Lord”. Some of them cut off well before the track ended. My point 5 years ago was this: Yes they’re talented and yes it was “a cappella” but for some reason they sang this with a pre-recorded vocal track of their voices. Then I said I’ve heard them record this live without a track before and it was really good.

@NateAlex10 No. I think you're talking about the bass singer (in the gray suit). It's just the angle that you're seeing him from and the fact that he closes his eyes a lot in this video.

@lubbockhigh44 Maybe not anymore but he used to smoke, say around 14 years ago and before. Too bad though. He goofed one time during a concert when he declared that he needed to take a "smoke break" when he wanted to say "a little break" and it brought the house down, especially the rest of the quartet which included Gerald Wolf and Mark Trammel.

@njgraber Lol that's kinda funny. It would be embarrassing, though. Mostly the reason I asked about this is because I saw Tim walk out for about 10 minute during a concert in 2011 and I wasn't sure why. And I also wonder if his voice would be as deep as it is if he hadn't ever smoked. Tim himself told me his voice began to get abnormally low as a teenager so I assume it's mostly natural.
@GamingDrummer8914 жыл бұрын
I was just wondering...I've been told Tim is almost like a basso profundo...has anyone heard Tim sing without a mic? How far down can he get before he loses projection?

@jandcgr BTW, in case you don't mind me asking, I've read a lot of comments here on youtube about bass singers smoking to lower their voices or something? Does Tim do this? And are those comments even true in general (I've been told JD Sumner smoked, so I'm just wondering)?
