Jeff,.... I found for the gold cube .. if you prewet the mats and then rub them with black sand to fill the matting ... when you start up your gold cube run it for a few minutes and the black sand will quickly run out and leave no air bubbles. Then you can run your ore classifieds.

Jeff thanks a great deal for sharing your extensive knowledge of prospecting and geology. I am a science nerd and work in healthcare, but recently picked up prospecting with a friend who owns property in the carolinas not far from the Haile Gold Mine. There is an abandoned mine on the property with more quartz than I'd ever seen. I don't know if we will find the motherlode or not, but getting outdoors, learning, and having a great time is what this is all in the spirit of. God bless you sir!

Actually iron pyrite can hold up 4 ounces per ton of gold in solid solution. Arsenopyrite is potentially much richer at up to 490 ounces of gold per ton.
@karhukivi
@karhukivi 4 жыл бұрын
That's correct. Many of the pyrite deposits in the Iberian "Pyrite belt" (S. Spain & Portugal) have 4 ppm (4g/t) of gold in them. The weathered gossans are a natural concentration mechanism as the pyrite disintegrates into iron oxide and the gold is released.

Hi Jeff, In 1967 I was tipping 2500 lbs of iron at Brillion Iron Works, repairing furnaces (3) on weekends. You need safety glasses and face shield. The last thing I did was stick temp probe in furnace, it spit back and hit safety glasses 3 places on right eye ! Then I showered and left for the Navy for 6 years. Life would have been much different if I had not worn safety glasses and asbestos jacket. I enjoy your videos, see you around the dirt pile some day. Dan

You are correct, but pyrite is a sulfide. Sulfides are very powerful reducing agents, capable of donating electrons to metallic ions in solution, converting them into the pure metal. Metallic sulfides, such as iron pyrite, arsenopyrite and cinnabar (mercury sulfide) precipitate from hydrothermal solutions, which are composed of extremely hot water under pressure, containing a large amount of dissolved metal ions leached from the surrounding rock and/or magma. You have no doubt seen video of the "black smokers" on the deep sea bed overlying volcanically active regions of the Earth's crust. Those are vents where hydrothermal solutions emerge into freezing cold sea water, dropping from 600-700 degrees to 0 degrees almost instantly. That causes all but the most soluble metal ions to precipitate as sulfides, forming what looks like black smoke in the water. Over many thousands of years, huge castle like structures form from the precipitated material. These "chimneys" are probably some of the richest ores on the planet. It's unfortunate that they lie so deep as to make their recovery financially unprofitable. These precipitated sulfides, being excellent reducing agents, reduce many metal ions, including Au+3 to metallic gold, which plates out onto the pyrites, leaving a film of pure gold. Other oxidized metals such as silver, cadmium, mercury, manganese, zinc and arsenic are partially reduced to sulfides themselves and can be found in pyrites.

Thanks for you informative answer I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes I have seen black smokers on TV I did not realize they were so deep they were almost unreachable.
@frankroberts9320
@frankroberts9320 7 жыл бұрын
Undersea hydrothermal vents are found where new crust is being formed by spreading of adjacent tectonic plates (rift zones) or where old crust is being recycled into the mantle (subduction zones). These are the deepest features in Earth's oceans. In rare instances chimneys can be found in areas of older, thicker crust far from these places, where volcanic hot spots are active, such as the waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands. For the most part however, the smokers are found miles beneath the oceans, where mining is either impossible or not financially viable. It's one thing to stick cameras on a deep submersible and shoot a lot of pretty pictures of the smokers. It is quite another to design and build equipment capable of hauling up millions of tons of sulfide ore from 3-½ miles down.

Hey Jeff, there's a roast that I read about a long time ago and tried it and it works. This one you can do in the field as you only need a match to light it and a roasting pan like you have.Not sure but I think I either found it in " A Handbook for Prospectors" Richard M. Pearl or Roses, T.K. Take sample mix with flour or carbon, KNO3 . Also called salt peter which you can often find at drug stores or stump remover. I usually add a little soda. Usually equal parts. I've done this in old metal gold pans. Crush with your rock hammer, pan to beads collect and smelt.

When I was a child about 7 years old, I found a rock all gold. It was completely gold color. About 2 inches by 3 inches; I never believed it was gold and always thought is was fools gold. Could it have been gold! If so how much would that be worth today if it consisted primarily of gold? That was in the late 1960's
@FSCB2013
@FSCB2013 3 жыл бұрын
About $220k in USD. Estimating it was 2x3x2 inches =12 cubic inches = 196cc. Density is 19.3 g/cc. So weight =3.8kg. Gold price now is about $56k /kg. That is if you sold it today. This is better than if you sold it back in 1960s. Inflation in US has only gone 8x from 1960 to 2021. Gold price has done maybe 30x in the same time period.

Hello Jeff, That is a good video clip and interesting thing. I know that gold inside pyrite crystal is belong to refractory mineral, that need preprocessing as you mentioned. and the mini furnace is really good if it could reach high temperature in less then 5 min. the gold you got is relatively big is worth to do it. don't forget to say hello to Slim.. Thanks a lot. Regards

Jeff Hi great informative video's. You are roasting sulfide's and pyrite's. I see you pan out the free gold. If you just roasted all of it, would it hurt the free gold to be present when roasting?

Thanks.....you can roast them all together and it will nmot effect the Gold.

Hey Jeff & Slim, Thanks for another extremely informative and entertaining video. I just moved to my new house and property in North Idaho, and I can't wait for all this snow to melt away so I can get to digging in my back yard for the shiny. I got tons of round rock, quartz, and decomposing granite, in a hole that was dug about 4' deep so I think my chances are pretty good that I may have some pay dirt somewhere out there. Also, the nearest gold/silver mine is about a mile away from me so again, I'm feeling pretty lucky. Got any tips based on the info provided? Please keep up the great lessons. :D

you betcha my friend.....as far as tips go check the USGS reports and any info on that area or Gold mines in that area to get an idea How the Gold was traveling...then after that sample sample sample....

Hey Jeff, you mentioned using sodium nitrate and borax as an oxidation agent. Would potassium nitrate suffice? Also, in your experience is the addition of an oxidizing agent better than just a virgin roast of ore? Thanks Jeff and Slim!

Yes, they are almost identical except S N is hydrostatic and isn't prefered for Blk Pwd use. As for simple oxidizers - NaNo3 is fine BUT I'm pretty sure Jeff said Potassium Nitrate, KNo3, and many Blk Pwdr guys just use stump remover. Check the lable to see Pot Nit. Cheep Cheep. So, Sod Nitrate is perfect.@@keithcrawford6310
