I love that smile too. I tend to think that it's somewhat of an involuntary reaction to her wrestling pose, and I doubt she's even aware she's smiling, but I also think that it speaks to her eagerness of the sport--part of what I think makes her such an excellent athlete. She really loves the sport, and to me, she's less in it for the victory bas she is in it to find God in the sport and in herself; the smile then is like a question to her opponents, asking, "do you love this sport as much as I do?"

At the 2016 Olympics Helen Maroulis wrestled Ukraine then China then North Korea then Sweden and then Japan. Five matches. Saori Yoshida wrestled four matches in all.

It's sad that we will never see the rematch, I think Helen is favored there just because of the age gap but Saori is such a great of all time I could see her being able to pull an upset.

Maroulis is the type of young woman that makes her parents and friends proud of her and rightfully so. She is also the subject , I am fairly sure, of many fantasies and dreams. I wish her continued success in what ever she does in the future. Great match Helen !!!!

Yoshida looked off in this match. My guess is Helen had a big strength advantage? There were moments in the final minute where Yoshida had big positional advantages but didn't use them. Also, the relative ease in which Helen defended both single-leg attempts to me suggests that she was a lot stronger physically.

Just found out Helen was cutting well over 5 kg to make 53 kg. So yeah, way stronger.

Yeah, Yoshida said in an interview that Helen was stronger than her. Yoshida also wrestled up at 55 and 58 kg, most wrestlers cut tons of weight for the Olympics. Yoshida also did not have her father in her corner for the first time because he had recently died, and she admitted it messed with her head

I've never seen Helen play so defensively! Usually she's the one attacking relentlessly. But yes it does seem Helen had a strength advantage. Awesome match, great performance.
