As an old-school sign painter working in the trades many years, this was the most giving and forthright demo I have seen from a fellow tradesman. When I was coming up, you had to catch a journeyman at the moment they were doing the job to get this information packed "goldmine" of tip and tricks for engine-turned surface gilding. Thanks so much!

So cool! I’ve done more gold than most sign painters, doing gold on 40 plus Cable Cars (3 boxes per car) for SF,Hawaii, Japan, all over the us & Canada but never had a tutorial! It’s been years but about to go out and put some gold on some carved letters and this was a great refresher course! Thank you!!!

@PinstripingbyPaulTucker
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker 5 ай бұрын
I am not exactly sure what you mean but here is some information. the gold size is the glue that holds the gold leaf to the surface. it has to be underneath the gold leaf so it sticks to the surface. if for some reason you want to remove some gold leaf off the surface you can use paint thinner to take it off, just make sure the surface you are working on will not also come off with paint thinner if that did not answer your questions, keep then coming until I get it.

anything you will be touching or cleaning after the job is done would use quick size and then clear coat. quick size has a short window (under a half hour) and slow size would have a hour or more open time for you to apply the gold leaf. good luck with your project!

@@roelroble1986 good day to you! great to hear from you on this. yes, the clearcoat diminishes the effect slightly because the shine has to travel through the clearcoat. it also sometimes makes the gold a deeper tone. in the sun it will be just as nice as you thought it was originally. if you are using it for art that will not be touched do not clear it if you like the original effect. if it is going to be touched, washed, or on a vehicle, make sure to clear it. take care

Hello from Italy. Great explanation. Is the size specific to vehicle jobs? Or is classic oil based size used for wood frame gilding? Thank you for sharing
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker 3 жыл бұрын
From Italy? that is super cool! To answer your question: Quick size is used on things you are going to clear. I clear gold if it is going to be touched like a Truck doors. I use slow size for signs and do not clear it. The reason I do not clear it is slow size/ gold leaf will last for decades while clear at best will only last a few years. Clearing signs (that will not be handled regularly) will decrease the life of the gold as it breaks down and flakes off. Hope that answered your question

If I'm using an air brush on my motorcycle can I lay down some gold base then just lay the gold while the paint is tacky?
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker 4 жыл бұрын
gold sticks to anything tacky. Real gold size has a controlled "open time" (when the gold will stick nicely, not too wet, not too dry. My thinking is the sprayed paint will have a shorter less predictable time, if any. try it out on scrap, if it works then you are "golden"!!! of course you need to clear over that too.

Alex Cervantas you really have to feel it. It is controlled by temperature and dryness in the air. Rub your knuckle lightly on gold size. It should be tacky, not wet. Don’t worry, just do a few test squares and you will get it!

Great video - Sir!! I wish you did that service for hire.. So how durable would this be in leather debossing, if it were sealed with a coating lacquer afterwards? I thought about using guilders paste, but I am not very familiar with any of this stuff.. I just restored an old shell cordovan razor strop and it has a debossing stamp at the top and the bottom and had Gold leaf in it, but when I cleaned it up the leafing came out, it did manage to stay all in the debossing for almost 100 years, but I had to give the strop a deep clean because it was filthy.

Thank you! I am not familiar with the gold leaf on leather. But I would imagine if you made it so the top was not porous by putting some sort of coat on it. Pop question from one sign man to another. If I lay patent gold inside a window (graphic backwards) and wait the proper time for a quick size set, will engine-turned effect be visible on outside of glass as well as on the inside? I can burn a sheet or two as you have done in your demo. Just wondering in lieu of a test whether you have ever tried this.
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker 3 жыл бұрын
I really do not know. I assume you would back up the gold with black enamal to protect it so I would say not at all. also gold size will "cloud" the view of the gold through the glass. if you do it let me know the result.
@randywizek5706
@randywizek5706 3 жыл бұрын
I did the experiment on a 6"x 6" glass sheet using a single sheet of patent gold, following your timeline to the letter and gave it a few extra minutes as well, so about an hour and change. You are absolutely right about the color not being as bright but the engine turned effect is the same on both sides of the glass!! I would not really call the color cloudy so much as more amber colored as a result of the quick size being that color. See what you think: [tone-mark.com/Patent gold-Engine-Turned-on glass-Gilt Side.jpg] and [tone-mark.com/Patent gold-Engine-Turned-on glass-Glass Side.jpg] Paul, thanks so much again for this awesome tutorial. ok something is wrong. let's try and narrow it down. I am not familiar with that gold size but let's assume it is good and we can go back if all else fails. 1- use real 22 or 23k gold leaf. intimation leaf is too hard to get a good turn with. 2- make a large patch or stripe. put a bit of gold on a little early and give it a spin. see if you burn through or at least make a turn. 3- put gold on another part of that patch and tru again. 4- keep going until you see proper tack vs proper force on the velvet. you should be good to go! If this doesn't work buy another brand of gold size and see if that's the problem. look up www.letterheadsignsupply.com/ if they have it, its good stuff. good luck!!!

the higher the K the softer it seems to be. I use 22, 23 and 24k gold leaf along with white gold and aluminum leaf. aluminum leaf is harder to get a good engine turn on. Great video!!!! Only thing is yes. You showed to early. Just right. And too late. My question. Is what is time frame. ???? Did you leave hour between each. ???? Yes each is going to be different based on environment. But in general. Once you get to just right. How long untill too long? To do a 2inch strip down body line of vehicle. Does it dry by time I apply gold. And start at one end. Or how long is the "window" to apply and have time to work the gold?
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker 4 жыл бұрын
typically the time for just right is about an hour with quick size. the weather has a lot to do with it too that is why you need to test with the back of your finger. time is a reference but the squeak tells all! you get used to seeing if your finger sticks too much and you know you need to wait. if too little then you should have checked sooner. I set an alarm on my phone for an hour then start checking about every 5 minutes. open time for quick size will vary but usually as you brush it on you are kind of staggering the drying time. typically I start leafing where I started painting the size on and follow the same pattern I did applying the size. good luck!
@davidsolomon915
@davidsolomon915 4 жыл бұрын
@@PinstripingbyPaulTucker Yes I thought of that. To start at same area same direction. So it about about an hour around. Yes I can apply leaf that fast. But is there any time frame on the turning? Just laying leaf on is near instant But a 3 inch strip down a vehicle will take some time to turn from one end to the other. Or once leaf is on. That's fine. Or I need to turn as soon as its applied?

@@PinstripingbyPaulTucker "Do not clear it and it will last forever"....sooo, funny you say this. I did a monument sign for an auto body shop 15 years ago, I did a smalts background on the panel & we had gold leaf prismatic letters done to go on it. we didn't get the letters installed the same day, & left them at his shop. We returned the following day to find he had his painter clearcoat the letters. I told him that was a bad idea. today the gold looks great besides the fact the clearcoat is peeling off the letters. 23K Gold on a sign does not require a clearcoat.

Can I want to know how can I clearcot over the leaf on the car ?? Do I have to or no ?? If yes how and what to us . Thanks
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker 3 жыл бұрын
yes you can clear over the gold for leaf on a car. In fact, you must clear over any gold that you will be touching or washing regularly. The gold is soft and any mild abrasion will mark it or modify it's look. you can go to a supplier for car paint and get a two stage clear (one you mix a hardener in the paint) and you can either brush it on or spray it on depending on what equipment you have and the size of the gold area. I typically brush it on. try a few samples to make sure you are familiar with the feel and effect of the clear. if you are clearing you must use quick size or the gold will wrinkle under the clear. good luck! thank you for writing.

Veritas et Aequitas no it does not (effectively). The velvet is more consistent and textured. Cotton just to wipe off excess gold.

Sorry for the delay I did not see you commented. I get mine at Easyleafproducts.com I have been liking the 22k gold and using their own brand, it has ELP on the packaging.

I’ve been trying the one shot and having issues. Is the luco good to automotive clear coat over?
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker 5 жыл бұрын
quick size by luco I have no problem with clearcoat. sometimes if put i put on too much too soon it wrinkles the size but if you brush on clearcoat tr not to flood it, or spray clearcoat try a dry coat to seal it in first then a nice gloss coat.

Does it matter if composition leaf or 24K leaf is used?
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker 5 жыл бұрын
I can't imagine "used" gold. once it goes on the surface the part that is not stuck to the glue/sizing turns to powder. If it was just hanging around and someone is selling it "used" then it is fine and perhaps great! older stuff can be nice quality.

Thanks for the help. I keep burning thru my composition leaf with my velvet/socket head turning tool. I picked up a 5000 Grit SP tool and I'll try some vintage 23K leaf using it next time.@@PinstripingbyPaulTucker

@@AbbandonLOD composition leaf is really hard to engine turn. Gold leaf is soft and malleable so it reacts easier to the velvet. also variegated is impossible to engine turn

I would like to know y did you have to up the fake gold paint Whats the reason for that ?? And how much does real gold leaf cost
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker 3 жыл бұрын
I am not sure what you mean by "up the fake gold paint" but I do know how much real gold cost. it can vary between $45.00 to 65.00 a book. a book is 25 sheets of 3.375 x 3.75 gold leaf. The price is dependent on the cost of gold and the amount of books you buy.

Hi I used gold leaf (not real) in jesmonite and it turned green how do I stop this?
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker
@PinstripingbyPaulTucker 3 жыл бұрын
I am not familiar with Jesmonite but just looked it up. My thinking is maybe the fact that it is water based? Two things to try, using real gold should be a solution or clear the gold with automotive clear before the jesmonite? I would think oxidation of some sort is the culprit and real gold would eliminate that. Good luck! Let me know the outcome

@@Mosey410 looked for my video I did for a facebook question. weirdly can not find it but I will do one this winter, this is our busy time of year. here's something to keep in mind in the meantime. if you drag the velvet straight down it is the darkest effect. straight across is the lightest effect and 45 degrees down to the right or left gives you a middle tone. a letter "I" for example would have a straight across on top, straight down on bottom and 45 down to the left on the left and down to the right on the right. I protect the areas I do not want effected with a piece of paper (cut to shape if need be) good luck!
