Undercover reporters pose as gangsters with up to a billion dollars of black money that need to be cleaned. They gain remarkable access to members of Africa’s Gold Mafia and film closed door meetings with crime bosses.
A senior African ambassador offers to launder $1.2 million using the cover of his diplomatic bag.
Criminals offer lucrative deals to clean over $100 million through government gold export schemes. At the centre of it their operations is southern Africa’s biggest laundromat, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.
Gold Mafia, a four-part series by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit looks at how society’s obsession with gold underwrites a global shadow economy. The undercover team infiltrates the rival gangs that turn dirty cash into gold, which is then sold around the world.
Through thousands of confidential documents and exclusive interviews with whistleblowers from within the criminal organisations, investigators obtain the blueprints of billion-dollar money laundering operations that service the political elite. And the investigation leads to the highest offices of southern Africa.

As a kenyan, one of the most disturbing thing is that Musalia Mudavadi who was a major beneficially of the Goldenberg saga that almost crippled the Kenyan economy in the 90s, is now the third most powerful person in Kenya. It is heartbreaking that right now people are dying right in our hospitals because there is no medication. Africa is not poor! We just have heartless bustards in positions of power. If nothing is done following this documentary, then we are doomed. These individuals need to rot in jail! I salute Al Jazeera for to notch investigative journalism 👏👏👏

The illiteracy in the comment section is disheartening. when a country is sanctioned, they have to resort to other means to sell and bring foreign currency into the reserve bank. When Iran was sanction and could not sell its oil, Norwegian and Greek smugglers were brought in to smuggle the oil out of the country and bring in money to run the country. How do you expect Zimbabwe to sell its gold when it is sanctioned? The investigation does not show that the money is going into the ambassadors pocket or the president's pockets. yes the smugglers are stealing from the government but to talk of corruption when the government is only trying to sell its gold and bring money to the reserve bank shows that many African commenting in the comment section below are illiterates. they simply do not know how the world works. Zimbabwe has to sell its gold and smuggling is the only way and that is not corruption as it is not going into private pockets. the guilty here are the smugglers who are exploiting the situation to steal from the government. Lets see what the remaining episodes hold.

Not that long ago I've been doing research about gold producer in the world. The biggest 3rd is Switzerland, UK, and Hongkong. Then I dug deeper to where this three countries get their gold from (because you know, there's no way Switzerland, UK, or HK own their gold mine). But they tend to ship their gold to one another (for example Switzerland get it from HK, UK gets from Russia and Switzerland) but Hongkong gold majority came from UAE. Then at last, I finally get to find their major supplies, which is came from DRC, Ghana, Uganda, Mali, SA. I'm glad you cover this story. Just kinda sad we can only see it but can't make differences.

I tell you. I am a friend to one African. He argued with me that Zimbabwe is poor country. I laughed so hard I said please wake up from slumber. I am not a Zimbabwean but can guarantee you Zimbabwe is a very rich country. It's the nuisance from Leaders that makes it look poor but never will ZIMBABWE be poor.

I’m a Namibian and listening to this documentary makes my heart bleeds. Zimbabwean people are suffering because of the greedy government. I wonder how did Uebert Angel the so-called prophet get involved into this dirty business. No love for the well educated Zimbabwean scattered all over the whole world suffering not knowing that they are the richest people in the SADC region. 😢

@@betterdaymotion Ok. Let's say they HAVE to use other means to sell gold for the Zimbabwean people. What investments have these politicians made to Zimbabwean infrastructure? Despite heavy rains this year, why do Zimbabweans go without water? Kariba dam if full of water but the country cannot produce hydroelectricity. Biti says it takes $55 million to run 6 national hospitals in zimbabwe. Why are nurses and doctors underpaid?where is the Zimbabwean people's cut in this deal?

As a Kenyan, I always knew we are corrupt to the core! Any association with Pattni is mind blowing corruption! No wonder the guy has not been seen in Kenya for a while! But it hurts though! Across Africa we are suffering because of smuggling. Can’t even imagine what takes place in Congo.

@@betterdaymotion You are accusing people of illiteracy when you are failing to make key connections. Do you really think Government officials are that clueless that gold leaves the country and some forms are filled to say X amount of dollars came in when only a tiny fraction comes in. There is top officials enabling this chicanery with some fat offshore accounts. The white guys, the Indian guys are bad news but they are not doing it in a vacuum. There has to be local handlers benefiting at the expense of the citizens. Most people are against sanctions but the issue here is sanction busting to benefit private individuals on the back of national resources.
