Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear Nymph (with hotspot) - Trout Fly Tying for Beginners

Another easy nymph fly pattern, the Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear is a true classic and one of the most popular nymphs ever created. The hare's ear dubbing can be changed to almost anything to match any situation; this particular tie adds a caddis green hotspot in the thorax.
Hook: #12-18 Nymph
Thread: Black
Tail: Tuft of hare's ear
Rib: Gold wire
Body: Hare's ear
Wingcase: Turkey wing feather, dark slip
Thorax: Hare's ear with guard hairs (different color for hotspot)
Savage Flies is a project (named after one of my homewaters, the Savage River in Western Maryland, US). I've been trout fishing for many years but have only been tying for the last couple and am learning more every week. If you have any pointers on techniques that would help, I would love to hear them in the comments.

Man this is a nice looking fly. Looks fun to tie as well. I think I have seen green rabbits 🐰 on a couple of occasions in my life. But we will just leave that here. As for the hares mask, a person needs that in natural for sure. With this particular fly you also mentioned it in green. But you personally, if you only had a hares mask in one other color?Which color would you choose other than natural? Very nice job Sir. Thank you for the great video.

Ha! That Orvis dubbing brush is a trade secret. (Unless anyone figures out it was a Popsicle stick with piece of Velcro glued to it.)

Hey, thanks Sean! Sorry I just saw this comment. I'm using a Sony Handycam, FDR-AX33. (It's an actual camcorder and not a DSLR that it seems a lot of KZbinrs use.) I use free/opensource software for editing. Some of the earlier ones I used KDEnlive but the last several I've been using Olive. It's still in beta but I'm liking it so far. I appreciate your comments and certainly appreciate you watching the videos! Cheers, Matt

Oh yeah Sam! I'd tie this as big as a 10 or 12 for bluegill and crappie. Maybe even throw a bead on it. :-)
