12:00 minutes of the video: Yes, there was no social safety net so people had to work for everything they have and they were pioneers, that built the country and 1/3rd of them returned home because they either did not like it or they weren't willing to put in the work necessary to succeed. They did not come to an already great national with institutions, ready build cities and a welfare state to support them. They were not from "all over the world". Almost all were from Europe which means after 1 or 2 generations they cannot be disguised from other Americans. Now, it's hugely political as if the people being flooded into western countries lean and vote on the left and if they voted conservative the left couldn't build a wall fast enough.

The Huntington thesis. Not the clash of civilisations, but the notion that there are settlers and their offspring who built the country (which must include blacks and asian immigrants in california) vs more recent arrivals who benefit from social and economic structures they find. I agree with the basic notion but i do get concerned the settlrr vs immigrant distinction will be used to undermine inclusion and foster a mindset of superior rights and entitlement of a class defined by ethnicity, similar to what we saw among Afrikaaners in most of the 19th and 20th centuries. One of the few certainties in history is the propensity of humans to distort valid ideas to further their interests. Tread carefully.
