It was initially to be used as a sound barrier due to the close proximity of the buildings next to the park. To be honest, though, I think the tunnels and side tunnels actually add to the ride and helps you really feel the sense of speed as you FLYING by the tunnels and walls!

It’s even faster at night at the end of the day I would recommend if you’re not going to be there for the full day come later and leave close to closing as possible and always have gold striker as a last ride preferably in a backseat. I’m not sure if it’s just me but during the night it’s dark which makes the ride a lot more fun and it also feels a lot faster like 25% more speed or something

A definite favorite. It is such a RELENTLESS coaster. You don't feel a "slow down" until the brakes at the end of the ride. Fun fact: The Gold Striker tunnels and half-tunnels exist to act as a sound buffer, because when Gold Striker first started to get going, Great America's neighbors launched sound complaints because of Gold Striker ;)

I used to think people were crazy for going on roller coasters. I rode the grizzly first before this one, and honest I prefer Gold Striker so much more. It's so much more comfortable and smooth, not that I mind the rocky feel of the track. I honestly even got the gut feeling WAAAY less on gold striker. Used to think people were crazy for riding these, but now I'll go on pretty much everything at Great America haha

Grizzly is a classic roller coaster in the sense that the thrill doesn’t come from the ride throwing you around, but fear that the ride is going to shake itself apart and kill you. It’s a feeling of insecurity and danger, but not actually that exciting a track. It’s not great and I hope at some point it is decommissioned and replaced. If you want to ride a truly great classic wooden roller coaster, you want the big dipper at the santa cruz beach boardwalk.

I have never been on a wooden rollercoaster. Everytime i go to an amusement park i see that one old wooden rollercoaster that looks haunted and scary that has been shut down and deserted.

Older Woodies are notoriously expensive to maintain, because they bend and warp and need to be constantly refurbished, so they tend to fall into disrepair and get shut down. Newer woodies like this one are made of prefabbed materials, so they take way less maintenance and stay smoother for longer.

Loved this ride, One thing about this ride is that it has speed al the way through. And ive been to many BIG theme parks including Knotts Berry Farm, Disneyworld and land, SeaWorld in san diego and Orlando, universial studios in Orlando, Six flags discovery kingdom, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, and GA and still gold striker is my favorite woodie :D

Grizzly is sketchy. Gold Striker is one of the best roller coasters. Kind of a bad one to start with, hardly any roller coasters are ever going to live up to your expectations now.

I have a fear of roller coasters too! I would recommend starting with Grizzly, then move on to Firefall and other rides like Delirium, the Pirate Ship, Logger's Run, and other rides that kind of have a drop. Try Flight Deck and then ride Gold Striker! That's what I did and it helped me! Don't worry about the drop. Just have fun!

I just rode it and it was freaking awesome. The first drop is steep but not as much as you think. The other drops feel really good, not a bad g-force at all. I hear that people say it's very smooth but it was a bit rough to me, but that's why I liked it, very relaxing. Fantastic for a first timer .

stealth was one of the first of its kind of coaster so it always had maintenence problems so GA moved it. I did like that coaster too, didn't feel that powerful but before tatsu it was the only coaster I rode with those type of trains. lines always sucked for it as well

Gold Striker is an absolute beast of a ride. Great America has always been a great place to go when you’re nearby, reasonably priced and great rides. But there was really no reason to travel to go there, nothing special enough to stand out. Maybe flight deck (previously top gun) was when it came out, but steel roller coasters have gotten much more sophisticated and it’s not really worth flying or even driving more than an hour to see. But Gold Striker is a must-ride for any roller coaster enthusiast. It is an absolute trip, you cannot believe that it is a wooden coaster. It is relentless. It never lets you rest for even a second. It’s nonstop thrill, it’s the finest adrenaline pump I’ve ever experienced.
