Gold vs Your Disappearing Dollars

Gold has appreciated while the value of the dollar has depreciated - but how much? Is it accurate to say gold is worth more in terms of dollar value simply because the dollar is worth less or is there a lot more to it? We're going to use the average price of a new car in the U.S. as a case and look at January of 2020 vs January of 2025. What would happen if you held the purchase price of a car in gold or in dollars for five years? Thanks to US GoldMining for sponsoring this video.

I stopped buying gold when price exceeded $2000 and that was a mistake. I finally caved last week and grabbed 4oz at $2800/ea, costing me $3200 more (or a lost 1.5oz) than it would have if I just bought when I thought the price was "too high" at that psychological $2k. I guess the lesson is to always be buying because the purchasing power of the dollar will do nothing but go down.

Yeh I would lose no sleep over that . if you don't need the cash , you may as well store it in Gold. I do feel your pain though as I had to buy 2 oz , well ended up buying 8 sovereigns , pre 1933 to make it seem like I was getting cheaper deal, they are only 7.98 gram so not even 2 oz but close enough 😂 , ill be doing the same every month until I cant 🙂

Good info thanks. Back in q4 2018 I swapped 300k dollars for 300k gold and 75k dollars for 75k Silver. Seems to me that was maybe the best financial decision I have ever made. Also, starting this century in 2000 gold was around 275 per ounce so it is up about 1100 percent to date. The SP500 since early 2000 is up about 450 percent. Gold wins all the way around the block. I don’t include BTC as it is to me a total speculative trade with zero intrinsic value.

@@2is1gold Agreed. Gold vs. US$ is not anything that moves in perfect lock step. In some years, gold doesn't keep up, in other years it does, and on rare occasions, it does even better than just keeping up with inflation. But whatever the case, that gold is a superior form of saving is not in doubt when observed over the long term. Gold doesn't pay any interest because it doesn't have to bribe people to own it via an interest rate. Anyone wanting interest or a dividend can always sell a little of their gold to generate them at any time they choose.

I've been slowly buying gold since it became legal again, and bought heavily in the $1,600 to $2,000 range. Then I retired, so my spare money became much more limited. I have no need to sell, though, so all this is mostly academic to me right now, but loads of fun! And I never bought a brand new vehicle in my life. I prefer to get ones that have spent 2 or three years as leased cars. They look and run great, so why spend the extra?

I think that the US$ is stronger and more persistent than many people give it credit. What will replace the US$? The fact is, there just isn't a good candidate for this that is a large enough pool of capital that the entire world can use it as a US$ replacement. Perhaps there will be someday. Maybe the SDR will go digital and become such a currency. I really hope not as that would do terrible things to our national sovereignty, buying power, and personal liberty. I agree that the US$ only looks strong these days when it is compared to other fiat currencies but it is when it is compared to gold and even to silver that the real story becomes even more obvious. I've been buying gold since late in 2013 and try to buy regularly each quarter. I modify this schedule as seems appropriate for the then current situation. Still, it's harder to pay more cash for less gold these days. My 1st gold buy was 5 1-oz. Maples for a little less than $6k. That same $6k today buys around 2.1 ozs. While there is always the possibility of a price pullback in gold, the few price dips we've had in the last couple of years have been small compared to the 10-15% price dips of a few years ago. This is making these dips more difficult to recognize as dips and not simply as routine volatility. Perhaps the days of "buying the dips" has ended for gold?

The pain factor of missing out buying gold earlier on is at an all time high. The gap has widened between hourly wages and spot price. It’s crushing. I can only hope the price falls back down. I can remember those comments of “why doesn’t gold go higher” back when it was a bit more affordable, and I always thought good let it stay low and crash if it needs to. With all the news and attention the past years it doesn’t seem likely that gold won’t do anything but keep moving to the moon however it could stay at $3k for the next ten years trending sideways. The plunge protection team and the paper market could maybe come back again to suppress upward price movement. But feels like they have lost control. One thing I know for sure and two for certain, the dollar is steadily losing value, unless doge can save it and or tariffs and we start meaningfully manufacturing things in the USA again soon that the Bricks will buy.

What many folks fail to understand is that gold and silver are **not investments**. Please realize that. Precious metals are a means of preserving your buying power--that is all. An ounce of silver or gold will buy you pretty much the same number of goods and services as it did 100 years ago. Example: As a young boy in the early 1960s, I would ride with my dad to the gas station ("John's Esso" in my town--lol) to fill up the gas tank. My dad would get the tank filled with "high test" gasoline--remember that?--for his white Ford Galaxy 500 with red interior and stick shift and bucket seats. Guys checked his tire pressure and oil and cleaned the car windows while the gas was pumping. When it was all done, Dad would hand the gas pumper a $5 bill. In return, he would receive change (yes!) in addition to S&H Green Stamps--remember those? A gallon of gas was roughly 25 cents a gallon during that time. Today, you can take that pre-1965 (90% silver) quarter to any coin shop and sell it for enough of today's fiat money to buy... a gallon of gas -- well, actually, a gallon-and-a-half in my area now. [Side note: In terms of real money adjusted for inflation, gasoline has actually *dropped* in price significantly over the decades and people simply don't realize just how good they have it now.] The point is that, generally, gold and silver hold their value over time. There is no better way of protecting your hard-earned wages so that you are not legally robbed by the government via inflation. And in the even that a SHTF zombie apocalypse occurs, no no one will be interested in your paper assets. However, once things start to settle down and people start coming together again, a standard means of exchange will be necessary, and gold and silver will fill that need quite handily. With all of that said, I do not recommend putting all of your spare money into gold and silver. For me, 5% of my net worth is in gold and silver. (I may increase that a bit during the coming year.) The rest goes into other investments that will actually outpace inflation (over time) such as stocks, bonds, real estate, or whatever. May as well increase the amount of fiat paper (to buy more silver and gold) while we can.

Gold is not directly linked to a US$, but also to the supply and demand. Since China, Russia, India or other countries National banks are buying gold as well this also influences the price of gold, who is not only moving with the inflation rate, but is also influenced by current supply and demand.

Here's the thing, the strength of the dollar means this is the time when gold should be underperforming. @edb3877
@edb3877 19 сағат бұрын
Which game is that, Jona? It's not gold's fault that the US$ is shrinking in buying power but it sure does offer a nice alternative to it. I agree that the price of gold seems high but it's higher in Canada, Australia, and any number of other countries. Besides, why should gold ever be less than expensive? It's called "the money of kings" for a reason. One can always buy a little silver or 1-5 gram sized gold bars if their budget is tight. The important thing is that PMs offer an alternative to the ever-shrinking value of fiat currencies and we can avail ourselves of this opportunity if we wish. From the way that things are looking, PMs are one of the better ways to save any money that's not needed for paying our bills.

In the case of an EV, it's probably more about what we CAN fix than stuff that needs fixing. Not to mention fast tire wear from the extra heavy battery, horrid depreciation, and finding someone qualified to make AND certify their repairs. If that battery is damaged in any way, even superficially, no shop will certify or warranty their work on it because they do not know how much damage, if any, has been done internally. Replacing that battery can be a multi-tens of thousands dollar job.

Inflation? I prefer asset inflation. The price of Ham in the supermarket is .49c per pound. Ham was .49c fifty years ago. Crazy theories appear whenever Gold price reaches a new high. My theory? This is probably the 3rd time for me that Gold set a new high. The assets are cyclical. Soon , I will be back to owning a Pet Rock and the S&P will be climbing to new levels. I have had Gold priced @ $3000 and Silver $35 for easy math. I have been waiting 5 years.

@@JABoyle3875 Only ever bought ONE new car in my life and that was a 1971 Toyota Corona Mark II back in 1972. Yes, it was on the lot and didn't sell in '71. But it was a wonderful car, peppy, economical, and very reliable. I drove it for 10 years and then sold it to buy a different vehicle. It was fine at first but simply not large enough for our growing family.

The only glitch in the logic is there have been times when the premiums for gold have been high. Even though gold is at a recot rtright now, if you shop around, you can get gold at spot, or very close to it. That does take some of the sting away.

I wish you were there to hear the conversation I had with a guy who's in his mid-60s and I'm only 49 years old telling him about the economy and stuff and he wants to fight back with his own terminology and he said he'd rather be in Fiat and I said I rather be in gold and just because he's a billionaire doesn't mean he's right because I proved my point with the analogy that what he bought in 2004 with 2 million got outpaced buy gold to this point and then that was when gold was at 2650 an ounce now it's at what 2880 an ounce. What he doesn't realize is that he wouldn't have to go through the hassle of renting out property which is hard to get tenants at this point because the economy is crap dealing with taxes and paperwork period which the property taxes cancels out a lot of what he makes in front of his rental costs so it's not like he's making hand over fist let's rent a cars the actual percentage gold is making over his property valuation eats out his rental Revenue
