JS Bach played on his preferred instrument.... this is getting close to "baroque perfection".... yeah, you can hear the tangent action but then again so could Herr Bach.....

Yet J S Bach specified all the Keyboard Suites, (But no indications for the Partitas collected as ClavierUebung Pt 1 after being published separately) the ClavierUebung Pt 2 (Italian Concerto and the French Overture), and the Goldberg variations for Harpsichord. An e minor suite has a title which translates for the Lute Harpsichord. The ClavierUebung Pt 3 is for Organ. There is no keyboard piece that directly specifies clavichord in J S Bach's handwriting. We have Forkel's 85 page biography (or manifesto) which is the only source as to the Clavichord as J S Bach's preferred instrument. Forkel has a reputation of anecdotal additions to pad out the his details taken from the 1754 obituary, and information from WF Bach (his teacher) and CPE (Forkel purchased works of J S Bach from CPE as well as corresponded.. The "Goldberg Variations" receive the name from Forkel's embellishment/fabrication of an alleged occurrence eight years before his birth, and without corroboration by contemporary documents. According to Johann Forkel, “Bach preferred the clavichord to the harpsichord, which though capable of great tonal variety, seemed to lack soul. The pianoforte was still in its infancy and too coarse. Both for practice and for intimate playing he regarded the clavichord as the best instrument and preferred to express on it his finest thoughts. He found the harpsichord, or clavicembalo, incapable of the gradations of tone obtainable on the clavichord.” J S Bach did prefer students who had first learned on the clavichord (exercises, scales, etc.) to those which had started on the harpsichord. However, J S Bach was teaching his students to be musicians and for the majority of his students to be Organists.

Is this clavichord surviving one ? The sound often includes noise by moving key arms. It's berry interesting for me. I made a replica of replica after Silbermann. The sound also has such noise.

That's correct but for the TV it's not beautiful putting mic's in front of the picture. Also if you listen on computer it's not always the correct spectrum of the sound. For the CD we used two DPA 4006 above the instrument and two neumann M150 for the room.

Do a search for "Benjamin Joseph Steens" and that will bring you to them. Unfortunately, the variations were not recorded as loudly as the Aria.

@Keysforjourney clavichords are known for this effect. It is especially prominent in the bass register and in pedal-clavichords this effect is grotesquely baroque. This is far from slight, on a "from dry to wet" scale this would be more then 50%, the Q factor is narrower, nontheless.

Is there any effect involved? I can hear a slightly phaser....o.O or is the instrument doin that phasing?
@paavobergmann49206 жыл бұрын
I´ve heard clavichords live, and I find this recording sounds very natural. Maybe it is because the tangent defines the very end of the free length of the string upon impact, and thus the string is struck at a node, instead of at a trough, like in other string instruments? Also, any pressure on the key (and you need at least some striking force to agitate the string) also adds tension to the string, which is released as the key is released, maybe that causes the "phasing" effect?
