Let's be honest: "Emilia Perez" should never have been this close to winning Best Picture. Every community it feigns to represent turned against it, the storytelling is sloppy and reductive, and some of the songs are downright awful. At least half of the nominees would *eeeeasily* be more deserving winners. If it loses, this controversy should not be seen as the single reason why. There are a lot of nails in this particular coffin.

I don't understand the argument that Emilia Perez had advantage over The Brutalist because of the "sheer number of nominations". Which nominations it got did people think The Brutalist missed? Original Song? Makeup and Hairstyling? International Feature??
@Ryusevi6 сағат бұрын
fr the noms are so... padded with irrelevant stuff like 2 songs, a makeup nom that definitely won't lead anywhere and international feature, which not every movie is eligible for.
@xenialiashko6 сағат бұрын
It’s not about B missing, but about the additional branches supporting EP. Like songwriters and lyricist putting ep on top of their ballots.
@FrakkinToasterLuvva6 сағат бұрын
@xenialiashko And how does that imply that they would vote for EP for Best Picture over The Brutalist? Does the fact they didn't nominate it for things it was not in contention for mean they like it less? Same with Anora. It was never in contention for crafts, score or song. Conclave missing director can mean something, this doesn't mean anything.
@chrisjrosen5 сағат бұрын
I don't think The Brutalist missed anything, and you could argue EP "padded" its numbers with the song/international nominations. But the nominations told us pre-Karla blowup that the Academy in almost every branch loved this movie. EP got in for makeup, cinematography, and sound. It had broad Academy appeal, and to think it was polarizing felt like a fool's errand. Now that's all changed. But I think it had the advantage because of that obvious passion.

Yes, no good actors in Mexico... really ? *What is the best way to show Mexico's social problems ? Yes, a Narco Musical... really ? *A film about a Mexican family and the mother does not speak Mexican spanish... really ? *This movie is about the reality of life in Mexico and was shot in Paris... really ? *If you go to a restaurant or coffee shop in any city in Mexico, you will be kidnapped... really ? *The songs in this movie have nothing to do with Mexican culture. Mexican singers... naahh. I can't freaking understand why this movie has more Oscar nominations than Casablanca, The Lord of The Rings, Chicago, The Revenant, Forrest Gump and Schindler's List... Why ? FYI TRUE STORY: The Mexican journalists and students of cinematography had scheduled a meeting with director Jacques Audiard at Cineteca Nacional located in Mexico City on January 14th, needless to say everybody was waiting for him and guess what... he canceled at the last minute.... I feel sorry for her, to be honest. I know her tweets are out there but so are everybody else's. She is being targeted and the film is being targeted. Film Twitter have launched such a campaign of hate against the film, this was bound to happen. It's so common to blame the tweeter rather than the people who are spending 24 hours a day trying to find the tweets. It could happen to anyone basically. You might argue that not everyone has islamophobic or racist tweets. But people can draw attention to any tweet and it can be turned into something offensive. That's the whole point. And the sad thing is it's only a film. How can people direct so much hatred towards something that isn't even real? It's bizarre. No one has been murdered. People aren't being held hostage. You can just forget it. But those haters have to destroy it and leave a path of destruction that leaves Karla Sofia Gascon caught up in it. The sad thing is this kind of thing signals a win for Wicked, the least offensive film nominated. Do we really want bland, inoffensive films winning Best Picture for the foreseeable?

I think everyone involved deserves critcism including Saldana. But it won't matter because she has Hollywood connections and she will likely win because of those connections not necessarily because she gave the best performance.
