I can tell you, Juan de la Cierva was a genius!

Cheers mate! More than 40 years ago I saw a C.30 in a museum. This is the first time I see an autogiro in action. Great!

First class video. Thank you very much. Gyros aren't dead. They are the best fun you can have with your clothes on. They are like flying a motorbike.

Thank you for the explanation, I had imagined some sort of mechanism where the prerotation gear bore perhaps on arms on a feathering spindle, with a spring return to positive pitch. The angled lag hinge is quite an elegant solution.

I was speculating and did say that there were other ways to do the pitch change without a swashplate. By the way, any of his machines that didn't rely on aerodynamic surfaces for rotor control were in effect using a swashplate for cyclic control. It's just that the swashplate mechanism is hidden, or combined, with the rotor bearing/s.
@schlusselmensch

@Afrocanuk Tough one to answer as swashplate mechanisms were in common use long before Cierva utilized them. I suppose just as soon as he started tilting the rotor hub for cyclic control he pioneered the swashplate because in reality the swashplate and the rotor hub assembly would be one and the same. It was only when a jump takeoff feature was incorporated that the classic swashplate might have become a required feature (although there are other ways to do it). I suppose his patents would tell.

The Cierva 'jump start' autogyros didn't use a swashplate. Angling the lead-lag and flap articulations by a value different from 90º made the 'autodynamic' rotor possible. With this system, and while the rotor was pre-rotated on the ground, the blades were in a extreme lag position and at zero pitch. As soon as the engine was disconnected, and the torque applied to the rotor went to zero, the blades advanced to the extreme lead position, and -thanks to the angled articulation- got the pitch...
@XXAVIERBAP
@XXAVIERBAP 11 жыл бұрын
... got the pitch that was necessary for the rotor to pull the gyro a few meters high, for the 'jump start', while the rotor inertia lasted...
