I don't Cry very often but I do so every time I watch Golden Cygnet.. Its just mind Blowing.. To see an Unbeaten Novice take all before him.. Then carry 12 stone 2 against Champion Hurdlers of a Vintage era and the best Hurdlers at that.. Bloody Scottish Champion Hurdle.. Wish they had waited till the next year... But nobody has Suffered more than Edward o' grady.. Im Distraught watching him now.. Think of the poor stable lass or lad.. Going home to an empty box.. Just an Amazing Horse.. The likes of which you see once in a lifetime.. The Cygnet Deserved so much better.. Sleep well Cygnet....

Best hurdler I ever saw. Sadly that day at Ayr proved fatal.

Thanks for these two pieces of rare video I have not seen them before, Golden Cygnet I think would have proven to be one of the greats only for his tragic early demise in the Scottish Champion Hurdle.

One of the great tragedies. I think of Golden Cygnet often . He was still a novice ,a baby , and they didn’t leave him alone while he came to himself. There is nothing else to say ,so terribly sad. Greed was at the heart of the decision to run him at Ayr . I wish I had seen him : it would have meant so much.... Sleep well Golden Cygnet ...43 years ago...you will always be in our hearts....and our dreams! ...and while you sleep , know that people will catch themselves saying....’ ....but don’t forget , there was Golden Cygnet, now he could have been anything...!’

Remember that this wasn't some tupenny-hapenny trial, it was one of the top novice events in Ireland! I wonder if he would have survived with modern vetinary treatment. I think I'm right in saying that he died some time after his fall at Ayr.

Likely would have won multiple champion hurdles such was that horses ability. Sadly we can only watch these videos and think what might have been.

they looked pretty fierce upright hurdles,he was a bit before my time but imagine him in the golden period of champion hurdlers night nurse, monksfield, sea pigeon would have been immense

Golden Cygnet was the greatest hurdler I had ever seen, the last hurdle at Ayr that day he never rose at it, the best since Golden Cygnet was Istabraq
