Golden Eagle at Carcass - March 2023

In our area, golden eagles primarily prey on small mammals, gamebirds, and snakes, lizards, and large insects. But carrion is also an important component of their diet; one deer feeds far more than the predator(s) who killed it.
Unfortunately, vehicle-killed deer along our roadways are one of the leading causes of eagle injuries and mortalities. Full from feeding, the raptors are slower to take off and often collide with cars and trucks.

Amazing capture. I’ve lived in Mt 55 yrs, a valley dweller. But have traveled the state more times than I can count for work. But I just don’t see golden eagles much at all. The highest conglomeration of bald eagles I ever saw were along the road thru the Seely Swan. They were feasting on white tail roadkill. The deer trying to get to the lake. And alot of traffic. Its a gorgeous drive. The badgers and beaver were great to see too! Thanks for the compilation!

Thanks, Diana! Glad you enjoyed it. And yes, sadly it's how we end up transporting many eagles and other raptors up to the rehab center - they get hit when feeding on roadkill that's still close to the road.
