There are indeed some gaping continuity errors through the show's run. The writing staff must have changed frequently, with many of the new arrivals not conscious (or not caring) about what story details had been revealed in the past. Nowadays, it seems even sitcoms have to follow a dramatic through-line (perhaps, it helps when hiring a new writer that they are fan of the show, as well). It could also be that audiences today have somewhat longer memories & can easily point out inconsistencies should they arise, especially as some shows have story-lines that can build across several episodes...or at least be alluded to in the future. The rise of such shows like HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER proves the need for writers to stay aware of what they just told their audience. The premise of it being a story told in the future & then jumping back & building to that point (to say nothing of all the flashbacks & flash-forwards) requires that kind of diligence.
