Bea and Rue were good friends IRL. Rue was the one who got Bea to do this show. I just read Rue's book and while there may have been some tension with Betty, which was due more to the difference in their personalities, they didn't hate each other. Rue said that the 4 of them would go for lunch every day and Bea would insist on waiting to leave til all were ready to go. Like any relationship, especially ones that last years, you're going to disagree or get on each other's nerves from time to time but it doesn't mean you hate the person.

As a young gay boy in Miami back in the day, we'd be at the local watering hole for the run up to the Golden Girls coming on tv on their particular air night. As soon as "Thank you for being a friend" song came on, the house fell silent, and all eyes were on the tv's scattered all over the bar. Nobody moved, and we all laughed with the girls. It was an event everyone looked forwards to. Everything stopped until the show was over. Only then could the night continue !! Oh, to be young again !!!

@@Celisar1 Bea Arthur was on All in the Family, then to Maude, and the others did films and other shows. So they appeal to those of us who grew up on those old shows, that would never see the light of day today. And also, they are campy, quick witted, funny, and appealing to a wide spectrum of viewer, I think. They just became a fixture in the gay community of Miami, when I was much younger then. It was the ritual we all partook in, come for happy hour, drink and get smashed, then the Golden Girls would come on, we'd all laugh as a community together, then the shift change would happen, only After the GG. Then the "Night" would begin.

This show had clever witty writers who wrote hilarious and serious storylines intertwined in one episode, that is difficult to do. You are wrong; Rose was already written as naive. During a casting session, Rue and White switches and read their roles. Originally, they wanted Rue for Rose, and White for Blanche. They switched reading the rollss one day during a casting session. THAT is how Betty they ended up in those parts, NOT the nonsense you say in your podcast. If you're gonna post stuff, post the truth.
@aleolidemu61699 ай бұрын
Yes. It wasn't the Producers' idea to offer Betty the role of Rose. They were typecasting Betty and Rue for their roles of Sue Ann Nivens (The Mary Tyler Moore Show) and Vivian (in Maude). It was Jay Sandrich, the Pilot Director, who watching Rue read for Rose noticed she wasn't right for the part, so he asked her to read Blanche, she nailed it. I was 23 when this show first aired back in '85, and I was hooked. To this day, I watch the seven seasons repeatedly enough that I can recite any of their dialogues (drives my husband nuts lolol). Unfortunately, I also became a critic about the storyline inconsistency over the years. The writers could not keep track of simple but important timelines. Largest example: Dorothy and Stan had been married for 38 years, she being pregnant as the reason, yet neither child was 38 years old. Kate and Michael were far younger (one episode has Dorothy state Michael is 23 while his fiance is 44). Or the different genders of both Rose's or Blanche's children and grandchildren. But having said that, and now that I am FINALLY their age, this show will always have a special place in my heart.

I could never imagine anyone other than Estelle playing sophia. I knew estelle was insecure, but she really became Sophia, and played Dorothy's mom perfectly. Bea said she had a hard time liking someone who was always so positive, and happy. No one can be that happy all the time, Bea once said. A bitter sarcastic aging actress, would have an issue with a lighthearted jovial type of person. Bea knew she was hardened, and she did try to lighten up around betty. Besides, with betty around, even the grumpiest person finds themselves smiling.

You could never replace any of these 4 women and still have a hit. They were the best. May they rest in peace.

The interesting thing is that they were in their 50s but dressed like they were in their 70s..., Because of how they dressed, I thought they were much older than they really were. Rose was my favorite, I miss Betty White, I loved her St. Olaf stories, & the dance competition where Betty shows how talented she really was will always be my favorite scene :) I can actually see Elaine Stritch as Dorothy, both had a sharp tongue, that would have been interesting.

I used to watch this with my mom and Aunt Ronnie. Bea Arthur reminded me of my Aunt Jean. Love the show. Rue and Bea were on the show Maude.

My favorite episode of The Golden Girls is Isn’t It Romantic? where Sophia rents dirty movies.❤

I love these ladies so much that I hope there will never be a remake. Having said that I am sure a show called Golden Guys could be a hit. Put 4 grumpy old men in a house together and see what their lifes are like past their prime.

They say Estel Ghetty was the youngest actress on the show even though she played the eldest 😊❤❤❤

Rue McClanahan was the youngest... Not Estelle Getty...

I just loved the fact that all 4 of them won Emmys for the roles. I once watched all 4 episodes that gave them each the award. My favourite was of Bea Arthur.

They were not elderly women, except for Sofia. When the show started Blanche was 52 years old and Dorothy and Rose were both under 55. That's middle age lol

Estelle Getty was not elderly either

@@blakemrolfsensanchez547 I'm talking about the age of their characters not their actual age 😊 In reality Estelle was one year younger than Bea.
