A couple of friends of mine actually crewed the full-sized wooden replica during its cruise along the US Pacific Coast in 1987, signing on following its stop in Jack London Square in Oakland, one of them even portraying Drake when visiting port. Not often reported was an incident that nearly resulted in it capsize while traversing the Golden Gate in a heavy fog, when it was overtaken and brushed by a container ship. One of my friends had been on watch, and so suddenly had the other vessel appeared through the fog that he barely had time to get out a warning before the encounter happened. Naturally, by the time the two vessels could have spotted each other, the Hind was well below the sight lines from the container ship's bridge and simply could not be seen. The other one of my friends was below in his hammock, and awoke to find himself looking UP at a gun port. Fortunately there was no damage, the ship righted itself, and they were able to continue.

There are arguments of which state can have “bragging rights” of a Sir Francis Drake and his Golden Hind’s shelter and landing somewhere between the 39th and 44th latitude of California and Oregon. The romance and adventure was a famous story among the book readers of pre-television/cable generations. I first found out (in Oregon) about the Golden Hind from my grandmother (1913-1994.)

Thanks. An anecdote about this replica, at least I think so. I was diving off a fishing boat, Duggies if I i am remembering right, off North Cornwell with some frends back in the 90s. The replica was sailing round Lands End and coming east toward Torquay for a large welcoming party, when the wind turned to a very nasty Easterly. The replica was struggling and getting too close to the rocky coast for comfort. We answered the call and took the ship in tow with an old car tire as a spring. I recall the ship being pretty heavy. We then spent many hours outside Torquay harbour waiting for tide and waves. As the light was fading the decission was made to go for the Harbour. Without being too dramatic this was very much a 1 shot deal. Duggie timed the run perfectly and the ship surfed down a wave into the Harbour causing not inconsiderable amount of consternation amongst the waiting flotilla of yachts there to celebrate its arrival. They also filled in as impromptu fenders. The rest if the day, and night, is a bit of a blur but the ship chipped in to pay all our diving expenses for the weekend. if anyone else has memories which include corrections from my aged memory, that would be welcome.

My father was a shipwright who worked on the previous replica built for the 1950s film. I have multiple pictures of him and the cast members onboard as he went on to crew the ship in the film if you are interested.

I still remember scenes from the 1961 TV series "Sir Francis Drake" with Terence Morgan and the wonderfully villainous Roger Delgado. According to Wikipedia a replica Golden Hind was made for the series but "The ship was destroyed in a storm in 1987, after which it was towed to Dartmouth and replaced with the current replica." Of all my years (life) of sailing and building model ships for a museum, 29 years full time, the Golden Hind in my opinion is the best square rigged designed ship I have seen. So well porportioned and obviously sea worthy. The Golden Hind is my most favored ship out of all of them.

Interesting and informing little story, with cosy humor added. An incredibly fascinating journey Drake had here. I always loved the _design_ of the Golden Hind, the looks. So much indeed that when my cousin was a boy and loved the pirate theme I built him a three foot long wooden pirate ship mostly modelled after the Golden Hind for his "PlayMobil" toy figures, with working rigging and sails - and loaded with treausre. I think he still has the model. It dwarfed the plastic toy pirate ships his friends had.

I have a soft spot for the Golden Hind because it was the first "true" plastic kit produced by Airfix in 1952. When they were originally making "educational" kits. My school in the 1960s gave us kids some of their kits to make.

Pardon me, but Drake's ships didn't sail through the Straits of Magellan, but through the Drake Passage. EDIT: I was on the replica ship when she was berthed in Southwark. I am short. I still had to slouch on the gun deck. How they fought the ship is a wonder. And no, I would still have been considered short in Elizabethan times.

I love Tudor and Elizabethan ships. Both gunner practices and rigging/sailing practices differed considerably from what followed after in the classic age of sailing warships, I believe - they were still figuring how to make ship-mounted guns and multi-sailed ships work at that point!

Drake, by getting home alive, became the first person to captain a ship around the world (Magellan died in the Philippines, and Elcano his no. 2 made it home, but not on his ship). Drake later died in Panama in Portobello on another raid which is quite a dangerous anchorage today due to piracy.

I built a model of the Golden Hind back in 1978 and spent two weeks just painting all those colorful details on her hull. The model took first prize at a model show but when the show was over the model was no where to be found. I hope who ever stole her appreciated all the work I put in! The real Golden Hind not only paid back her original investment and got the Queen out of debt but made Drake quite wealthy as well. His life was one of dangerous adventure and hair raising events that took the Spanish by surprise and made him the boggy-man in Spain. Too bad they couldn't save her as she considered an excellent sailing ship.

Consider the Dido class light cruiser HMS Euraylus for a mention on your videos. it was known as " a lucky ship" and 6 were built by the Royal navy ( named Euraylus). The Dido class had about 30 such ships laid down in the 1930's and 1940's. Only about 25% survived WW2. Their utility made them put into many difficult situations. The 'C' gun turret was removed in Glasgow prior to being sent to be part of the British Pacific Fleet (Task force 57 in USN terms). As a ship on 'point' duty, it was the first to fire at many Kamikasi attacks as the Japanese tried to sink the British carriers. The ship's log may be the best source of information for a video kind regards

Saw it in Coos Bay, Oregon in the 1980s. Incredible to think of a ship so small sailing round the world. BTW, some people think Drake repaired the Golden Hind in a small cove on the Oregon coast, not California. I strongly recommend "Thunder Go North: The Hunt for Sir Francis Drake's Fair and Good Bay" by Melissa Darby which makes that argument.

I've walked past the one in Brixham, a fishing village in Torbay Devon, and it's tiny. I think most of the fishing vessels based out of there are either the same size or bigger. To think that someone sailed round the world in something that big, with a contingent of sailors, marines and noblemen is truly staggering

My father took me to see the replica Golden Hinde in 1987 or 88 when she visited Coos Bay, Oregon. In 1579, the original Golden Hind sought refuge in in the same area near Cape Arago.

The side bulges on the GOLDEN HIND replica in London were added later to make the ship more seaworthy. Originally she was too narrow. There are of course no blueprints or even exact dimensions of the original, and the designers of the replica had no practical experience in building Galleons either.

Even with experience in building galleons, some of them were dangerously top-heavy. As is well known, a particularly drastic example was the VASA: She capsized in the first gust immediately after leaving the shipyard.

There’s a mountain not far from me on Vancouver Island that was named “Golden Hinde” by an early fur-trading captain who was reminded of Drake's ship as sunset hit the mountain (which is visible from the west coast of the Island) and in honour of Drake's reputed presence off the coast of the future British Columbia during the explorer's circumnavigation of the globe from 1577 to 1580

Incredible that a ship of the Golden Hind's size could circle the planet and collect as much booty without being swallowed by a large wave. My sailing experience is limited to Nimitz class aircraft carriers and an Iowa class battleship and there were some heavy rolls in rough weather.

That second Golden Hind replica- I remember coming aboard it while it was visiting San Diego California back in the 1980s. It left quite a big impression on child me. I distinctly remember seeing that golden deer figurehead. Though in my greying fractured memory I thought it was a full- body deer (hind), not just the head.

Strangely enough I've been aboard the one now currently parked in London..but not in London. It stopped where I live, Panama city florida, in the late 80s. There was also a massive structure that was built to look like the golden hind called the treasure ship and was a tourist attraction and restaurant..before it burnt down in 2010.

Spices were so valuable at that time that Magellan's expedition returned to Spain, it returned with one battered ship out of the 5 fine ships they left with and still made profit from the meager spices the crew was able to brought along. Thus the drake returning relatively alright with so much loot doesnt surprise me that she brought along so much value

It is hard to fathom, considering the primitive methods there were when it came to mining ore, how the Spanish managed to extract countless tons of silver and gold, from the Western Hemisphere, in the 16th and 17th Centuries.

The Golden Hind came to our port of Brownsville, Texas, on her way back to the UK. I was port director and gave her a dock for over a month. She was a top attraction to locals who came to tour her, and even hosted some cocktail parties. We are located on the Mexican border and she was most popular to Mexicans who crossed the border for a tour. Drake’s name, El Drago in Spanish, used to strike fear in the hearts f Mexicans, back in his pirate days.
