I have been painting with acrylics for 50 years and started with Liquitex and still use them today. With acrylic paints it really depends on your painting style and what you want to achieve. I use Liquitex along with their medium and mix a very thin layer of paint and build up the surface using this technique. You really have to experiment with paints of any medium to see how it feels and what you can achieve. It's all part of the process of being an artist.

@Sizzling Grill I only buy a few tubes of different paints at a time, and depending on how much I like them determines whether or not I will buy more. I also look for items that are on sale. Most art stores will have a big sale around New Years and the beginning of the school year in August. So that is a great time to get some pretty awesome deals. I am also signed up for a few news letters from various art stores so I am informed of anytime there is a good deal.

Liquitex are better used unmixed or with the Liquitex gel medium. However they do need building up, to bring out their full body. I paint realism on rough surfaces (i.e stone, bone) and i`ll almost always start with Liquitex and then move to Golden or Rembrandt as the detail gets finer, because they allow me to mix them enough to achieve the fluidity that i want, without sacrificing tone and brightness.

As a professional I use Golden, but mostly I use Golden Open which are a different type of slow drying acrylics that sometimes dries even slower than oils in some mixes. I occasionally mix in other acrylics, liquitex, system3 or amsterdam, but only when I need to use large ammounts or experiment, which I don't do so much anymore. Nice video

Liquitex! I thought you had the most fair video I’ve seen but still a bit misleading. Heavy bodied paints aren’t really made to be watered down. I find Liquitex heavy bodied holds brush strokes much better.I also like find the caps and bottles easier to work with. To get golden to the thickness of Liquitex I’m pretty sure I’d end up with less pigment than Liquitex has. May I ask why you don’t just use fluid acrylics?
@SaenaFineArt5 жыл бұрын
@@missartsyful I try to be very fair when it comes to products reviews, because not every product is going to fulfill the need of every artist. The pros and cons I have for myself are not going to be same for everyone else. I agree that Liquitex is great for abstract and impasto painters, as I mentioned in the video, and it can retain paint strokes very well. Heavy body paints can be thinned down, the trick is too not thin them out too much. Golden and Liquitex both create mediums and additives to help with thinning out heavy bodies. Water can be used and a great option for beginners who are unfamiliar with mediums. But of course you have to be careful and not use too much water. Mediums are the ideal when it comes to thinning out heavy body paints as they help to keep the integrity of the paint. That is the beauty of heavy bodies, they are extremely versatile and can be used a variety of different ways. Which why I tend to prefer heavy body to fluid paints.
@jamiegossett3 жыл бұрын
don't thin acrylics with just water, it breaks down the binder it loses it's ability to hold to the surface. use airbrush medium instead. skim-milk consistency, watery but has binder and will get same results. absorbent surfaces with mechanical adhesives like uncoated canvas or paper are the exception.

@matthewfraser41794 жыл бұрын
I had that problem, don't remember where I picked up this solution: Save all the plastic wrapping from everything (art products, groceries, whatever, so long as it's clean). Before you close a tube of paint, place a small square (maybe 1.5 inches or 3 cm) over the mouth of the tube. Then screw the cap on over the plastic. This keeps the acrylic from gluing the tube to the cap. Use the piece of plastic a couple times and just replace it (you're pulling this plastic wrap out of the recycling, it's free). You might have to carve some dried paint out of the grooves of the cap (which is easy) or from the threads on the tube's neck (not as easy-- best not to use anything sharp that might slip and puncture your fingers.

Heavier pigment load usually works better economically, despite higher price. I like a combination of painting methods, so tinting strength matters when thinning with a lot of water, or when adding texture / moulding/ impasto medium. I include glazing medium though, in very watery mixtures, because I read that the binding ability of the paint suffers with a lot of water

I haven't had that issue with my Liquitex tubes, I just got them a few months ago. So they are pretty new. I didn't like liquitex too the first time i tried them but i changed my mind . I'm not a expert but for me they are both good . The only difference i find it is that some colors from liquitex have a strange formulation that i try to avoid these specific one (Some violets are very ugly ) but they are also cheaper than golden and other brand than so far so good . The brands i use the most are Golden and Winsor and Newton . But I think that the Artist acrylics by W&N are even higher quality than golden because they have 0 color shift , they stay wet a little longer and some colors like Yellow Ochre are by far more pigmented and intense than golden and all the competitor . The only bad side of W&N artist acrylics is that they are harder to find than golden they have less color and they make only heavy body acrylics . I think if you try W&N Artist Acrylics you will like them even more than golden . They are perfect for your painting style . Nice Review btw 😊

Hi i have a set of 6 heavy body golden Tubes but i cant get an brown. Is it even possible to to it with phthalo blue, magenta and benzimidazolone yellow? Everytime it looks either to blue or green. And shading with these thic colors is also very difficult do you have a tipp?

While it is possible to mix a brown with the primary colors, it will never be very saturated. It will typically come out very gray. I would recommend in buying a tube of brown paint. Brunt Umber is a great brown to start off with and is very versatile. As for shading I would recommend getting a retarder. Retarders help to increase the flow of the paint along with increasing the drying time of the paint. It will make it much easier to work with. I actually have a video about blending acrylics if you want to check that out.

I jumped into canvas for a change of pace and I’m trying acrylic fir the first time so I have NO reference as to quality and characteristics. My problem is that the acrylic I’m using isn’t pertinent enough. My dry colors are smeared away by new applications of fresh paint. I can only brush over a dry color for two seconds before it starts to smear off the canvas. The brand is Sax off amazon. I’m a long time artist of many sorts especially enamel paint so I want to know if it’s me or the paint. For example, is liquitex basics pertinent once it dries?

So a couple of things could be going on. There is a possibility that your paint isn't fully dry yet. Wet paint can flake or rub off if you try painting over it before it is dry. If you are painting in thick layers then it will take a bit longer for your paint to fully dry even with acrylics. I would suggest painting thinner layers or let your paint dry for longer. The second thing could be your canvas, sometimes inexpensive canvases aren't prepared properly and don't have enough gesso on them. You could try adding a few extra layers of gesso to help your paint adhere better. The last thing is the binder in your paint isn't very high quailty. A low quailty binder can really affect your paints ability to stick. Liquitex Basics are really great paints for beginners! They are inexpensive and the quailty is pretty great for the price. However they can be pretty tough blend, so they will take a bit if work to get really smooth blending. I hope this helps!

Saena Fine Art ..... finally a good answer with more than 5 words lol. I have golden isolation coat on the way and I hope that helps. The canvas is a double primed 12x12 some USA brand. There’s non point buying quality paint before knowing what’s cheap and what’s not first so I went with the Sax brand heavy body but I still have no comparison and I can’t seem to find any comparison videos that includes Sax. I’ve let these colors sit to dry infront of a fan for hrs and days and it’s STILL the same problem it just wipes away! Once the liquitex basics has dried, how resistant is it to painting over with fresh paint? Is it100% permanent?... I can literally start wiping away color from my painting on the canvas with saliva on my finger. I call that 15% permanent, I’m looking for at least 75-80% pertinent/resistant to water & paint. What would you say about how permanent the liquitex basics is?

Hey, maybe you know this by now but maybe you don’t so Imma just say it. you are comparing golden which I am pretty sure is a soft body with liquitex line HEAVY BODY you should have bought liquitex basics or liquitex soft body for this comparison. Have you tried (W&N) GALERIA or & What do you think about it? I am looking for a nice gold and a nice lavender/bright purple. Never realized how different all gold-paints are until I decided to do a bunch of paintings with a lot of gold. Do you recommend any particular gold?

Ops, I see now this was 4 years ago. (I googled galeria gold reviews and ironically this with two other brands came up. I am sure u already know about the heavy body by now I am a bit late ;)

Golden May be more expensive but with their high pigment load you use less and the tubes last longer.

I don't think they will, they do have a great lightfastness rating. My guess is they just wanted to keep the description short for marketing purposes.

you don't have to worry about blending if you don't blend at all

Unfortunately that is one of my biggest cons for Golden's Heavy Body paints. But that pigment load is just unbelievable. I do find using a retarder helps with extending the drying time and it makes them a lot easier to bled.

I would say Golden. Golden has a mix of glossy and matte paints. But you can use a gloss varnish to add a glossy sheen to any painting.
