When I bought one, it was only the size of index finger, I’d say, but grew to be my thumb size. Haha. It mostly just ate the same as my other fish-bloodworms, brine shrimp & daphnia, all frozen, and also sometimes live. It would occasionally eat the freeze-dried forms, as well, plus some Hikari foods. I like the Micro Pellets and the bloodworm "sticks". But I think these fish really prefer live or frozen foods, as they’re quite voracious, yet peaceful. I also fed my fish the flightless fruit flies, sold for feeding poison dart frogs, which was a great protein source. My killie would also eat small mealworms and waxworms that my reptiles ate, as well as crickets! Just refrigerate so they sleep and don’t jump! Lol! Then one day, I thought about adding a ghost shrimp to the tank for a "cleaner", after seeing some really nice looking ones for 50¢ at the fish store. Big and mature. That’s not something you hear often, "nice-looking ghost shrimp"? 😝 So I just got one, and it was a BIG shrimp, too, and I thought nothing of it… well, fast forward to my golden wonder killie eating it. Hahaha. I knew they were voracious, but I did NOT know their lower jaws could basically unhinge like a snake, or like an eel, enabling them to swallow almost anything that is the same size as they are. This ghost shrimp must have been half the size of this fish. 😂 Well, from then on, I only fed it live food, usually shrimp because my neighbor had thousands of cherry shrimp that were breeding like crazy, resulting in kind of non-desirable colors (mostly dark, brownish, non-vibrant colors, lol). Turns out _Neocaridina_ adults are the PERFECT size for golden wonder killies to swallow. 😆

We have a mated pair (Pete & Gladys) that have been in one of our Community tanks for close to 4 years now. They are with Panda Corys, 2 Longfin Bristlenose Plecos, White Clouds and 2 Kookoo Catfish. The tank is well planted and they have continually bred for us almost from the start. When we see fry we transfer them to a grow out tank. Their favorite food has to be dried mosquito larvae. They have never been aggressive to any of their tankmates and are 2 of our favorite fish. If you have never kept the Golden Wonder give them a try, you won't be sorry.

Loved the video. So peaceful and soothing to watch. This fish were abundant where I grew up ( West BEngal - outskirts of Kolkata ) . When we were kids we use to catch them and keep them in jars. Wild ones are rarely that colorful This golden variant is a result of selective breeding. The local Bengali name of this fish is " Chokkuni mach". Chokkuni means extra eyes, from top u'll see an eyelike spot on the head of this fish. " Mach " means fish.. I thought of sharing this info with u.....

I just found these fish in a fish store, and couldn't stop looking at them. They were fantastic! I would love to have them, but since I love smaller fish, I'm thinking these might not be the best ones for me. I also love to add shrimps to all of my aquariums, the small neocaridina, and I thought that maybe it can go well if the aquarium is heavily planted because these killi fish seem to mostly stay in the upper half of the aquarium, but maybe not...? I really have to look at what other types of inhabitants I want, because unfortunately, I can't have an aquarium for these only. Not until I live in a bigger house...

Great video. How large would you say a fish have to be in order to be safe from these predators? 5 cm?
@MichaelJensensAquarium
@MichaelJensensAquarium 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Carl. Well that depends on how high or fat the other fish are. Slim fish like Nannostomos and other skinny tetras and rasboras are considered food even up to a size of 5-6 centimeters. But fish with a higher body, like most barbs, will be safe in that size. As a general rule. If a fish will fit into their mouth... it is history. Cheers, Michael :0)

@MichaelJensensAquarium
@MichaelJensensAquarium 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot, Nikki. I am afraid that the Golden Wonders will be able to eat your Kuhli Loaches. I have seen them eat Otocinclus catfish - so that might happen. If you make sure there are plenty of places to hide for the loaches they might have a chance. But you should consider moving them to another tank before the Golden Wonders grow to full size. Cheers Michael :0)

A really nice looking lively fish :) a question, if you do not keep the fisheggs in water, how long can you store them in peat? Or is that not a possible way to breed them?
@MichaelJensensAquarium
@MichaelJensensAquarium 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Annette, with this species, just like most other non annual killifish, you can store the eggs on peat. But i don't know how long you can store them. Mostly we have used water incubating - but right now we are collecting eggs from the mops and storing them on damp coconut fibre. We collect eggs from 1-2 weeks spawn, and keep the eggs on the fibres until 12-14 days after the last of them were collected. In that way we get a large batch of fry hatching at the same time, instead of a few fry hatching every day :0)

@@MichaelJensensAquarium I was thinking about if someone wanted to buy eggs instead of live fish, it is easier to send eggs by post than live fish :) that was my thought behind my question. Another question, how long do they live?
@MichaelJensensAquarium
@MichaelJensensAquarium 5 жыл бұрын
@@AnnetteJohnstoneJarmyr To be honest, I don't know how long you can keep eggs of this species on dry incubation. But you can at least count on a window of 4 weeks from the day the eggs were spawned. Lifespan is up to at least 4 years :0)

I have 4 small, maybe an inch long GW Killifish in a 20 or 25 gallon long tank, what tank would be best for them once they grow up? Also do you know how fast they grow up? Thanks
@MichaelJensensAquarium
@MichaelJensensAquarium 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris. These 4 Golden Panchax will do fine in a 20 or 25 gallon tank. They are bot long distance swimmers, but like to ambush their food in short attacks (whether it's life food or flakes). No reason, that they shouldn't thrive in a tank of that size, even though the get considerable larger than they are at present. The growth rate is determent quite a lot by the food and good water quality in my opinion. But they grow fast. In good condition they will be full grown in about 4 to 6 months. Cheers, Michael :0)
