I totally agree. TND and also the third Bond with Brosnon suck, because neither their stories nor their realizations differ to any other action crime movie of that period. I am not talking about showing one expensive action scene after the other. A real Bond movie needs to have an alone standing idea concerning the story and its realization got to be spectecular, but at least ahead of its time, so that it sets new standards for the following movie makers during the upcoming years. Concerning TND and the third Brosnon Bond the only quality I recognized was a way larger convolut of promotion products brought into probably all markets around the whole globe.

I never found Ourumov boring. I thought he brought something the other villains didn't: a villain grounded in reality. Xenia and Boris are over the top caricatures, and Trevelyan is sort of a generic smarmy world domination supervillain. Ourumov is a callous military bureaucrat who gets increasingly stressed out by what he's gotten involved in. His reactions to Bond's interference are always priceless. Bond races after a cliff-bound plane in a desperate attempt to catch it, Ourumov stops his troops from shooting him like, "Guys, guys, hold it. I wanna see this shit." Tank comes barreling after his car, he starts taking hits off a whiskey flask. He's actually my favorite villain of the four because he's the straight man on a panel of cartoon characters.

Alec is more interesting behind the scenes. When he's on screen, he's a mere mustachioed villain in the top hat, but he knows James inside and out, and is able to outwit him at every turn. James is never in control until that final confrontation and even then, he gets lucky. He really was James' better.

@@gawdstockton483 a black bond is better than a female bond, because at least then he's still a guy, but i still think it's a stupid idea. james bond is a male character. if you want a series with a female secret agent, create a new fucking character. make it different, not just bond with tits and a twat. does no one have original ideas anymore? i worry we're already going down this road, as spectre's villain was basically dr. evil from austin powers. by that i mean, that's where the brother thing comes from. nothing in the books or previous bond movies even hinted at such a thing. we can't have more bond movies where the villain is literally a parody of a parody of himself. it will kill the series once and for all. if they'll do this, they'll seriously consider having a bond with PMS.

Tomorrow Never Dies gets a bad rep I think. Its not the best Bond film but its not by any means bad. It could be better written sure (in earlier drafts Natalia from GoldenEye returns and dies until Paris was created), but as is its fine. It was originally gonna be called "Tomorrow Never Lies" but they thought "Tomorrow Never Dies" sounded better after seeing it as a typo in the poster designing. Also the ending credits song "Surrender" by K. D. Lang was originally gonna be the main title song and its much better than what ended up being in the main titles sequence.

@bobgoran
@bobgoran 5 жыл бұрын
Well, I totally disagree. Pryce steals every scene he is in, and he always has a bunch of great lines. Sean Bean's 006 is more like Bonds high-school buddy and is not a worthy Bond villain. Carver's caper to get exclusive broadcasting rights in China is amusing and totally carries the movie. 006's caper to bomb London is more like an afterthought so that they could get an ending.

@@bobgoran I agree in principle, but on screen Tomorrow Never Dies just feels like the plot is there for the sake of it and promises a lot more than it delivers. I guess you could say the same of many Bond movies, but I enjoyed the fact that Goldeneye utilised a personal element and also the Cold War background gives it some grounding. I guess it depends how you like your Bond. I feel that after brilliantly rebooting the series with Goldeneye they just reverted back to formula with Tomorrow Never Dies, with some rather over the top gadgets, a world domination plot and a generic large blonde henchman. Even the Bond girls seem there for the sake of it, in Goldeneye they at least had personality or plot relevance.

Tomorrow Never Dies loses a point on locations? I think not. Amazing intro in the snowy mountains of Russia, followed by an awesome jet dogfight, sky diving into the South China Sea, underwater sequences, car chase in Hamburg with lots of gadgets, motorcycle chase through Saigon, they then take us to the Vietnam Islands of Halong Bay where the final battle takes place in a Stealth Boat. Forget the other locations like exotic hotels, military bases, battleships etc... Few Bond films have such a rich diversity of action sequences and locations as TND. Plus it has two excellent Bond songs. You think Goldeneye retained everything we want from 007? Yea those car gadgets Q described were amazing to see in action...oh wait.

Pretty much every line of dialogue of Goldeneye is an outstandingly-Bondish and beautifully quotable, one-liner. "This time Mr Bond the pleasure will be all mine" "Yes! I am invisible!" "Strangling a cat?" "For England James. For England Alec" "For England James? No.. for me" "You'll BLOW de gaz tankszz!" "It's clean. CuriousCase007 He’s a highly-decorated Navy officer. The 00’s sort of walk the line between espionage and soldier. He’s not a rookie, per se. They need a fit man capable of violence in the field. It’s a super old-school Cold War concept that doesn’t really fit in with today, but that’s also what more than a few Bond movies have been about, too. Lol
@curiouscase0075
@curiouscase0075 5 жыл бұрын
@@7ylerD That's right, he's a highly decorated Navy officer. Which means he'd have the discipline to not act as petulantly as he does in the movie. He's also worked in intelligence prior to becoming a 00, which means his 'rookie' days are over. The 00 section is the elite section - the highest position for an agent. The idea for CR is definitely that he is a rookie and "becomes Bond" over the course of the film (and QOS) which is, as I said, moronic. The novel highlights this, as Bond navigates through all the basic plot points without Bond going on this bloated, self-important journey.
@7ylerD
@7ylerD 5 жыл бұрын
CuriousCase007 Honestly, If there’s one thing the Bond movies have always been bad at, it was establishing what a 00 really is. They wanted a hard boiled bad boy character for Mommy M to slam her fist on her desk at and threaten to take his proverbial badge. So Bond is a petulant “rookie” with anger issues who gets the job done. I’m sure it’s not in line with the books, but it’s easily digestible movie fare for the masses.
@curiouscase0075
@curiouscase0075 5 жыл бұрын
@@7ylerD Again, you're correct in that "they wanted a hard boiled bad boy character for Mommy M to slam her fist on her desk at and threaten to take his proverbial badge". But it's contrived drama. Skyfall's dramatic throughline is much more organic and the drama is understated and plays very well. The Bond films never needed to explain what a 00 agent is beyond what is established in Dr No, and that film does it efficiently. I've said elsewhere that if you can manage enjoyment with such a film, then great. But its emotional hook is bonkers and amongst the other flaws (bland score, poorly developed love story, some woeful dialogue, etc.) it's very hard to see a good film there. I think most are merely distracted by the jaw dropping stunt work and pseudo "realism".

I really love this video! Thanks for sharing and glad you're reaching people (18k views!). I prefer TND (only just, both films are excellent). It's interesting you point out the look of TND as being a flaw. The high-tech Hamburg scenes are fitting for a film centred on media, and I feel that once Bond hits Saigon do we get a good dose of culture and local colour (especially during the bike chase, Wai Lin's bike shop and Carver's building). On Carver's Asian office, in your very video was I admiring the set design but later you say how it's something you consider a con. But I agree GE is very stylish, and it's a shame Campbell and Meheux couldn't work their magic for Casino Royale later on. What a clinical look that film has! While I don't agree with all specifics of you video (though most I do!), I agree with the general idea that GE and TND are great Bond films, and for that I'm appreciative of you posting it! Thanks!

I think goldeneye was just a cooler film, I must be one of the few who prefers the score of Eric Serra to Arnold's bombastic bond themes, still awesome but I like the techno vibe. Story, Goldeneye has a mix of realism and awesome over the top action the tank chase being so goofy its pure fun. Tomorrow never dies has some insane scenes too, I loved the helicopter and bike chase. Villains, oh its tough, sean bean is excellent as the big bad and the support he has is quite strong. Carver is a really fun bond villain and you can see Chris loving the role, but his main man is generic "I'll break you" henchman so goldeneye wins. Overall these are two of the strongest bond films with lots to love.

Great review, but man, harsh take on Natalya. She’s one of the most resourceful and self-sufficient Bond girls in the series, survives the Severnaya hit by clawing her way to the surface... in Siberia no less, makes her way back to civilization, and has a fully independent story arc until she meets Bond, tracking Boris by herself. Natalya's appearances in N64 Goldeneye falls into a class of missions known as escorts which tend to be universally reviled among gamers. Basically imagine a bipdedal, untrained golden retriever off leash while people with guns unload bullets all around them and you need them to perform specific actions to proceed without them dying. Allied AIs aren't that much better today in all honesty. But I agree with you that the characterization of Natalya is off. She was an interesting take on a Bond girl and I didn't find her annoying. I enjoyed her rivalry with Boris. It contrasted nicely with Bond and Trevelyan. Onatopp was just so. . . over the top psychotic.

Brosnan is sort of underrated. Goldeneye is tops for me mainly because of the memories it brings as it introduced me to 007. I believe that The World is Not Enough is better than Tomorrow Never Dies. The concept is better though they all have their weaknesses. Tomorrow Never Dies would have been better if Paris was someone who appeared to really have a film history with Bond, like the idea of Sylvia Trench.

If I was to describe Tomorrow Never Die, the word I would use is 'bland'. The Bond girl's in this film have very little substance. You get this teased romantic connection between Bond and Paris, but not enough to become invested in her to the point her death becomes a real devastation (plus the impact was ruined since you see Carver plan his wife's murder). When it comes to Wai Lin, she's packaged as the superior spy in Hamburg when Bond steals the decoder which I think really detracted from the film. Later on they do the whole 'Bond's equal' thing but she doesn't have a lot of character development apart from 'I'm a strong independent woman who will die for the mission if needed.' There's no backstory, no established motivation for being involved in the mission other than it being her job. This is in contrast to Natalya who gets given a backstory and quickly becomes a character you care about. The villains in Tomorrow Never Dies are also woefully underdeveloped. Stamper is just another terminator, Gupta is some fat gross guy no one cares about. Carver is probably the most well-developed character and yet there's something that still feels missing with him. It's probably because they tried to make Carver a Rupert Murdoch figure as much as possible that he loses some of his own identity. On the other hand with GoldenEye there is a stellar line up of villains. You have 006 who is Bond's equal in a lot of respects and you already relate to him as the tragic good guy who got killed off and then feel the betrayal Bond felt. Xenia, Ouromov and Boris all stand out well and I think Boris' betrayal of Natalya also help align Bond and her even further. I also agree with your points about the locations. When I hear GoldenEye I picture the dam, or the Severnaya dish/space station or the train or the cuba control centre with the big world maps, or even the satellite model itself. When I picture Tomorrow all I see is asian people on bicycles with a helicopter slashing its blades behind. Also, i think they messed up with the music choice for Tomorrow Never Dies. GoldenEye was all about modern bond while Tomorrow went back to old school. Just listening to the gunbarrel sequences you can already tell which is wayyy more cooler

For me actually Goldeneye is a bit of a convoluted mess. I like the more serious tone, love the theme by Tina Turner, but I always find myself losing interest about a third in. I always really enjoyed Tomorrow Never Dies, although it somehow feels more shallow than Goldeneye. But for the pure fact that I find it a more enjoyable watch... its Tomorrow Never Dies for me.

Goldeneye is more of a classic Bond feel, and Tomorrow Never Dies is definitely a sillier more technological savvy Bond movie. My biggest problem with the PB Bonds is the overuse of Q. Even when John Glen took over with For Your Eyes Only, his Bond's were not so much reliant on Q (however Octopussy is an exception). Tomorrow Never Dies is non stop, so it's over before you know it. They are both fun and they both have something different to offer. I like them both, but I also give the edge to Goldeneye mostly because it gets a lot of things right that TnD didn't.
@curiouscase0075
@curiouscase0075 5 жыл бұрын
What are you talking about? Overuse of Q? Q appears in one scene in GE, two in TND and TWINE. Q appears much more frequently in Roger and Dalton's era. In Licence to Kill, Q is practically a field agent. TND is classic Bond to its core, and your "non stop" assessment adds to the film's sense of urgency. The in-car briefing is a brilliant piece of staging. As for it being silly - all Bond films have a sense of outrageousness, even GE. Even DN and FRWL. TND has a good dose of satire and geopolitical/social commentary that is very much akin to Fleming's works. He always made sure to comment on Britain's place in the world and TND employs this convention admirably.

Tomorrow Never Dies, for me. Goldeneye is great but it's aged disgracefully. TMD, alternatively, has a story which has only increased in its relevance in the advent of social media and how popular opinion can be swayed in a digital context. Elliot Carer is as cunning, ruthless and cold as he is believable while Michelle Yeoh is my Bond girl.

I think a lot of people don't realize how young she is too. The actress who played her was only 24, so presumably Natalya is around that age too. It makes sense that she'd be hot-headed and terrified. She isn't a baddie-turned-good or a secret spy who is used to danger. She's just a young Russian hacker who was doing her job when her entire life changed in the span of a few seconds. It makes sense she wouldn't be too nice to Bond when she is forced to work with him. He represents the sort of cold-hearted killer she is scared of.

@@razzle2429 I think it has more to do with Russia's history of oppression. Seeing the figures of Russia's military murdering their own people and stealing a terrible weapon would conjure up lots of memories of the then very recent Soviet Union. In addition to, as you say, her being a civilian caught up in Bond's world.

Goldeneye truly brought out the original literary brand of Bond; the guy that would seduce his way into finding out exactly what he needs to know, then wait for four days in the jungle behind a rifle to take down the mastermind of whatever plot he was sent to foil. It just happened to be a friend of his in this story, so he didn't have to wait.

I agree with most gardein Pierce's movies as Bond. Die Another Day is the worst of his films but it didn't need to be. It started out as a fantastic character building story but when they got to the main villain they essentially ran out of ideas. So in order to make it action-packed and fantasy like they thought the audience wanted they turned the ending of the film into a bad remake of diamonds are forever. They could have done so much with Bond being tortured and brought to the brink of death by the enemy and show what it did to him psychologically. All they had to do was to dial back the villain to reflect more conventional villains like Carver or oo6. You said we got a ridiculous laser melting the polar ice caps are ridiculous ice castle that wouldn't even hold up long enough to exist on Earth and invisible car with television cameras and mini televisions that are bulletproof. Totally impossible and ridiculous.

It was rather hypocritical of M to label him as a sexist....! in Goldeneye, but she encourages him to use his charm and seduction to 'pump' Carver's wife for info. Same as when Moneypenny warns him of his behavior could qualify as sexual harassment in Goldeneye, but incites him by 'deciding how much pumping is necessary' in TND. Consistency as far as character development and relationships were never their strong suit.

Nice video, even though I disagree with many points. Brosnan being a cold hearted assassin just because of a glare? Sorry IMO Timothy Dalton did it so much better, The Living Daylights when Bond looks over Saunders' body is a perfect example, also when he kills Killifer in License To Kill, no Bond before or since could pull off that scene (and I am a fan of Craig, Connery and Moore) Natalya, the most underrated Bond girl to date, and is the best partner for Bond, the way she belittles him, and then succumbs to his charms (without losing her head) is perfect. Plus I like it when she kicks Brosnan's Bond in the shin and he does that groan. Villains, I agree Bean's Alec is one of the best villians ever. Boris is not great in fact he is an annoying c**t. Whilst Carver and Kaufman are just so camp in a way. They're great though. Action; again I agree the opening bungee jump is a classic, TND meanwhile wins here cause the film is literally action set pieces, not a bad thing. Locations; they're both great, but Goldeneye edges is out cause even though it is not as exotic as 'Saigon' its not as memorable. Music: No contest David Arnold's Score for TND, love old school classic, and whilst Eric Serra's score gets derided by most Bond fans, some of it is not bad. However the end song says it all, kd Lang's song is a great song, Eric Serra's no not at all. Verdict; Love them both, Goldeneye was the one that made Bond popular again, even though I find it overrated. TND meanwhile gets derision due to it being a big come down after Goldeneye, but I love it and its a major guilty pleasure. I really hope you do a Dalton double bill
