@@bettyglitter4760 well, these scenes aren’t included on the DVD set as it was removed to avoid any lawsuits from microwave companies, even though there was a time where people believed that microwaves would be dangerous to anyone with a pacemaker, and perhaps there were some people with pacemakers who had problems as a result of using a microwave, which is where all that dialogue came from. Though by the time this episode came out, people with pacemakers had no problems using microwaves. It’s a shame that the episode isn’t complete on the DVD set. Especially since reruns of the show are edited quite a bit anymore, which is probably worse than the cut of the episode as is.

It's not just Golden Girls, but a lot of shows that end up in syndication have a lot of small scenes removed to make room for more commercial time (or in this case, due to a lawsuit from microwave manufacturers due to a myth that has long since been disproven if other comments are correct). I've been re-watching some of my favorite Simpsons episodes on Disney+, and have seen jokes that I'm 95-100% sure I never saw before since most of my time watching the show was syndicated, and a number of them are pretty great (although there are a few that didn't hit me as much as I'd like).

Actually, kids, the reason why this scene was cut is the same reason why every episode of the Golden Girls (and other older shows) aired on TV in more recent years is missing scenes: Greedy TV broadcasters. I can still distinctly recall how this show used to begin immediately following the intro music -- but NOWADAYS, the broadcasters have tacked on an extra 2-3 minutes of ads after the intro, before the show itself gets going... So that's 2-3 minutes of EVERY DAMN EPISODE getting cut, and it's often painful for me to watch because I actually REMEMBER the hilarious lines/scenes that are currently being removed or hacked to death. It's really a sin; this is just too brilliant a series to ever be defaced in such a callous, money-grubbing way.
@rahndummwhazzat18987 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've noticed this. Some of these time-saving "hack jobs" are so awful and awkward, too, completely not in line with the fluidity of the show. Even viewers who haven't seen the missing parts should be able to tell when cuts have been done, at least sometimes. Like when one of the Girls is shown seated in the kitchen eating, drinking or talking with someone, and the very next scene suddenly has them about to sit in a chair on the lanai/patio, mid-speech with another character. It's a damn shame, alright!

Actually the reason this scene was cut is because the microwave production industry threatened to sue Buena Vista if they continued to show this scene because according to them and the settlement between the two groups there is no evidence that microwaves disrupt pacemakers. The microwave industry felt this could and would hurt sales and threatened to sue. To avoid a financial settlement, Buena Vista agreed to remove the scene from reruns and home copies (DVDs, Hulu, and Amazon)

Some people claim it was because that's not true, but apparently, it used to be true. I've seen prepackaged sandwiches in grocery stores in metal containers with warnings that say "safe to use in any microwave after 1980." It's plausible the girls believed it and that that microwave is a pre-1980 model, considering how the kitchen's color scheme feels like a holdover from the 1970s. Does anyone even know what brand of microwave it was? The low resolution of SD tape obscures any identifying marks. But of course, that still doesn't explain how a first season *Simpsons* episode could get away with building a whole episode's plotline (Krusty Gets Busted) around that same assumption when GG had to be cut. And also put that in the context of other Disney cuts over the years. Coco (RIP Charles Levin) was supposed to have more scenes in the pilot, but they got cut and who knows if they can ever be retrieved at all.

Yes, and a terrible irony of sorts that Rue died of not 1, but 2 strokes, and this was about a pacemaker. And, that using the microwave could cause her demise. I noticed the absence of the microwave , but never gave it much thought; nice job on bringing things into perspective. R.I.P. Dearest Rue.

DarkWillUser that's true. But a lot of DVDs use the syndicated episodes instead of the full episodes that were originally aired. I've bought DVDs that were like that; instead of the episode being 24-25 minutes long (as they were in the original tv broadcast) I found some DVDs had the syndicated 22-minute episode) I protested because I don't like being ripped off. The video above with the missing scene is because TV stations will cut scenes when shows go into daily syndication to add more commercial time. And a lot of times, the companies that make DVDs will use the syndicated episodes - because they think everybody is too stupid to notice
@whatdidoursurveysay8 жыл бұрын
I remember reading somewhere that certain episodes seen on the Season 5 DVD release were actually the syndicated edits, due to the original masters being unfit for release (either missing or damaged). I'm guessing this is one of the syndicated edits.

+DarkWillUser Yet that same year THE SIMPSONS did a similar plotline that revolved that same assumption in the episode "Krusty Gets Busted." Sideshow Bob's small feet and lack of a pacemaker as he used the Kwik-E-Mart microwave safely gave him away for framing Krusty the Klown.

In the very last episode of season four when they contemplate selling the house and moving out, they cut a scene out right after Blanche receives a phone call from the prospective Asian buyer at the end of the episode. In the original airing, Dorothy yells at Sophia to come into the living room while Blanche takes the phone call, and Sophia responds by saying words to the effect of, “Wouldn’t it be easier to put a dog collar on me?” I remember seeing that scene years ago during a rerun on TV, but it’s missing from my season four DVD set.

As they are going through items to sell at their garage sale, Blanche appears wearing a wig and early 70s outfit and white go go boots and recalling fondly on her and George going out dancing and her wearing that outfit. It's not on the cd series released. Why? No one knows

^ It's released on my DVD collection. I'm in Australia so that could be a reason why.

WOW! Thank you so very much for posting this. I've never seen the cut footage before and now the "So, who's for popcorn" joke makes sense!

This seems to be a recurring theme in Disney history since the death of Walt.

I wonder how many scenes cuts there are in the dvd/streaming/syndication episodes of the GG . From the comments in here, it seems this episode isn't the only one with a cut scene from its original airing.

I will think of this every time I eat popcorn going forward. . This is my most favorite show ever. I don’t think anything will ever match it. It had its own unique charm. On a different note; that was a cool old microwave. I would love to have one like it.

Also, scenes were cut from the episode, "The President's Coming, The President's Coming" Parts 1 & 2, as well. Very interesting to see that this was another episode that was cut. I don't understand why that is.

Owning the dvds, I had noticed many parts ( no doubt edited for time ) missing from Lifetime and Hallmark reruns.
@terrance32183 жыл бұрын
Same here not to mention that the channels either pick the worst spots for commercials or ruin the mood by using different music cues. I remember when Blanche came to the realization that Big Daddy was dead, the music was very somber but they have replaced it with more lighthearted music on Hallmark.

Usually scenes are cut from the DVD releases because of rights. In this case, they might have had to pay Goodwill or Cheez-Whiz royalties, or got permission, to publish just saying the name. It was a different world in the 80s, and on TV. Broadcasts weren't considered "published", just aired. Huge difference when it came to things like rights and royalties. On a side note, does anyone remember the episode where Dorothy says to Rose "KINDA pregnant? That's like being kinda Spanish!" Rose replies "Emilio Estevez is kinda Spanish". Rose line about Emilio isn't on DVD, nor is it on the reruns airing today. What's up with that?
@60gregma26 күн бұрын
The reason the scene was cut is because it is factually wrong. People with pacemakers do not need to avoid being around microwave ovens. It was one time true, but is no longer the case.
@nebraskabootman70426 күн бұрын
@@60gregma I agree 100%. I was just thinking of other legalities is all. Still, they could have left it in, or at least nowadays it would be ok. Back when they first cut out the scene there was still that "scare" and uncertainty about them as they were still rather new and not everyone had one yet. So sadly they cut it. The entire scene was setting up the joke for Sophia's line which now is just random.

On The Golden Girls DVDs, there are scenes in every single episode that never appeared in the syndicated television version.

Omg I just saw this episode! And the popcorn line always was a little curious to me 🤣 I thought she meant it as in brushing her off like "anyways,.." but this makes much more sense 🤣 definitely savage sofia !

Which was stupid because they could still have a microwave as long as Blanche wasn't in the room when it was being used.

This is why it kills me to watch TV Land reruns. These shows seem to have been painstakingly put together, only to have what I can only imagine is a monkey at an editing machine interjecting a commercial virtually midsentence. Hallmark seems to be a bit more considerate, if not for the bleeping of those deadly curse words like butt and hooker.

This has a weird Mandela effect in it - see how Sofia says "Cup of Noodles" instead of "Cup Noodles" which is what is supposedly changed to, but we all remember it the way Sofia said it?

I think there's a deleted scene or a cut line in the President Visits episode. The agent who interviews the ladies makes a comment about them being senior citizens and there's a jarring cut to Blanche with the audience laughing. I remember Blanche saying something about his comment, so a full version must exist somewhere.
@regalgs514 жыл бұрын
Yes. He references the house containing four senior citizens, but Blanche corrects him to try to seem younger and says, “Three senior citizens.” The man replies something to the effect of, “Yeah, right.”

But in season 6, in "There Goes the Bride" part 1, Sophia sticks her head in the microwave when Dorothy tells her that Stan gave her an engagement ring
@CJSayz29 жыл бұрын
Also Dorothy and Stan were married for 38 years because Stan got Dorothy pregnant when they were in high school...BUT Michael and Kate were both in their twenties when they were portrayed.

+deputyseal409 They must've either gotten a new one or they changed their minds with Blanche's consent. (Is that the right word?)
@KittycatDaddy8 жыл бұрын
+CJSayz2 Yes, but this was the mid 80s-early 90s. No one was exactly watching this for the flawless continuity ;)
@LisaCupcake8 жыл бұрын
+deputyseal409 There was a lot of this kind of thing where they dropped continuity in the show. For example, in one episode Blanche's middle name was Elizabeth (her initials spelled "bed"). In another episode, her "mammy" showed up and called her Blanche Marie. There are so many other examples of it. Still a very funny show, though.
