Thank you for sharing this. An extraordinary man with an extraordinary soul. I wish this short monologue could be used to encourage kids to realise the reward of adventure (not just sailing). I would love the chance to meet Sir Robin one day and “swing the lamp”.

The challenge of single handing is not for everyone. I love the fact you live by your own decisions. My humble experience was a 60 mile lake race with the most exciting being 30 to 35 knots of wind with waves that were in short duration between. I know pretty small and tame conditions but I still placed on the podium against fully crewed yachts. My challenge and my experience and am proud to have attempted it and enter.

We should never forget Nigel Tetley who was the first to actually complete his circumnavigation by crossing his own path. He just did not finish the ‘race’ as his 7 yr old wooden trimaran final broke up approaching the Azores. He was actually in the same type of boat as Don Crowhurst! Cheers Warren

Nigel was pushing his boat, trying to keep ahead of the false position Lies from Crowhurst, he lost everything and eventually committed suicide, all because of a lying coward 😢

Totally agree with Sir Robin about the euphoria and managing risk, after every adventure we actually become safer.. People who avoid all risks are a danger to themselves and others.. I despair when smokers lecture about H&S, oblivious to the fact they are committing slow suicide 😢
