Absolute Materpiece ! Only a genius like Brahms could compose this: at the beginning the tremendous impressive chorus reflects the severe lutheran Bible interpretation; but at the end, the music turns to redemption.

Deathly anguish, heartbreaking torment, sorrowful beauty - this movement has it all - and it is quintessentially Brahms - so truly reflective of his extraordinary genius...

Saw this piece performed last night by my city's symphony orchestra. It was fantastic. I had to turn my hearing aids down a little bit during the second movement when it got to the crescendo.

I don't see any "Deathly anguish" in this piece, but Brahms is the best classical composer.
