Alaina Johnson many of Goldfingers fans are German and I'm sure some English speaking fans speak German as well. Either way the German is meant to preserve the character the original song. Yes Nena did rewrite the song in English but in both Germany and English speaking countries the origional German is what caught the eye of the public. it's like asking why your cellphone has a picture of a land line when you make a call or why electric and luxury cars have engine noises played through speakers. It's a familiar medium for all and a call back to those who understand that.

I think both versions fit their lyrics very well: The english is quick and chaotic, just like the story in the lyrics: A fault in the computers sets a defense system in motion and events unfold quickly as a nation rushes to war. The german version is slower, but the story is of a weary survivor recalling how repeated human failure lead to a century of war.

I have to confess, I wish they'd done the whole thing in German; the English-translation lyrics have always felt pretty rhythmically clunky to me, and John Feldmann's German pronunciation clearly shows he's got the chops to manage it. But still, an awesome cover done by an awesome band!
