I have a ten gallon tank, clean treated water, and one betta in with my goldfish. My betta is eating just fine but my goldfish won't eat. I got her four days ago and she wouldn't eat. I've been forced to put her into a tiny container too eat so she can't go any where. Please tell me if I'm doing this right. And please tell me how I can get her to eat.😥
@Lifewithpets72

The goldfish should not be in with a betta fish. They require completely different set ups. The betta fish is probably bullying the goldfish causing a lot of stress. The goldfish needs the bigger tank so I would put her in the 10 gallon tank and put the betta in another tank. I'm assuming the tank has a filter and has been cycled. If not you need to be doing 50-60% water changes every 2-3 days otherwise the ammonia will become very toxic to the fish.

I would look into finding it a new home. Carnival goldfish can grow 8-12 inches in length and need very large tanks, preferably a pond. Until you can find it a new home do daily large water changes. Goldfish produce a lot of waste, that waste becomes toxic in the water. Doing large water changes will remove it.

I babysat my neighbor's goldfish for a week. No filter, less than 5 gallons in the tank, the fish's growth was EXTREMELY stunted (you can tell by the eyes in proportion to the body -- they were way too big). So sad to see. I asked her about a filter, but she said she had one and didn't use it BECAUSE IT WAS "TOO LOUD". I'm sorry, but if the fish's wellbeing is "too loud" for you, maybe you should've taken that into account before buying the fish and making yourself responsible for it. I somehow convinced her to let me give her a 15 gal tank (still not big enough), but she still doesn't use the filter and doesn't fill the tank up even half way. Not even 10 gallons of swimming space for this guy. And then guess what? She got ANOTHER FISH "TO BE ITS FRIEND" BECAUSE SHE DECIDED THAT IT HAD MORE THAN AMPLE ROOM IN A PARTLY FILLED UP 15 GALLON TANK!!!! What should i say?? I don't think she'll listen because she's very stubborn, but is it worth trying?

Unfortunately goldfish are one of the most abused fish. People don’t realize they get big and need a lot of care. I’d suggest trying to get the point across that the water is toxic and burning the fish. How would you like to live constantly feeling like you’re being burned. To most people a fish is a disposable pet.

60% WATER CHANGE EVERY 5 DAYS!!!???😱😱😱, that is way too much. In a large tank like that, with the very few goldfish you have, you need to allow for the beneficial bacteria to grow in order to reduce the amount of ammonia that is released into the aquarium via the fish. If you dont do this, your vulnerable to a tank spike which will undoubtedly kill all your fish. Id say a 25% water change every week to 2 weeks is more than enough to maintain a consistent level of beneficial bacteria while also reducing the ammonia levels
@Lifewithpets72
@Lifewithpets72 5 жыл бұрын
This tank was not large for this many goldfish. 20 gallons for the first fish and 10 gallons thereafter. It’s a common mistake people make with goldfish to put them in too small of a tank because they buy them small. These fish got huge! The largest is now 8 inches. The tank is fully cycled and I’ve never had an ammonia is spike. My ammonia and nitrite are always at 0 which is what they’re supposed to be. The nitrates are the end result of a fully cycled tank. These are what get very high in goldfish tanks if water is not changed in large amounts. Goldfish produce a lot of waste and need much larger water changes than most tropical fish tank set ups. What you’re proposing is nowhere near enough. Bacteria predominantly lives in the filters and on the surface of the tank not the water column. I have 8 tanks including tropical tanks and most of them get 50-60% water changes. I never have any issue with water quality or ammonia spikes.
@zakretsas8898
@zakretsas8898 5 жыл бұрын
@@Lifewithpets72 i never said that the tank was to large for the goldfish, i am well aware that goldfish require a large tank as they are messy fish that produce a lot of ammonia, i was saying that 60% water change is a lot of water to be taking out of the aquarium in such close proximity between water changes, but a lot of the hobby is trial and error so what works for you may not work for someone else. As long as the fish are still healthy, thats all that matters. And in regards to the nitrates, certain levels can actually be very beneficial to the established ecosystem under specific circumstances, such as if your keeping live plants, the nitrates serve as nutrients for them
@briannaharter4411
@briannaharter4411 5 жыл бұрын
@@zakretsas8898 that's not how beneficial bacteria work. they live on surfaces like on decorations,the walls of the tanks.with most of them occurring in the filter media cause they like flowing water and filter media has a lot of surface area for them to live especially if you have a sponge filter. they aren't in the water column. also for huge bioloads it's really dangerous to small water changes cause the nitrates can build up.which can cause old tank syndrome.

Hi, I could use some help from well, anybody really. My grandma decided to send us goldfish yesterday, they each arrived in what was basically a flower vase with some gravel at the bottom. My brother didn't want his so my sister took two and I have one. I found the biggest tub I could, it's about 14 inches in diameter, 7 inches deep, I think its got about 6 gallons in it. I put the gravel that came with him and some other rock things at the bottom to hopefully keep him interested while I can sort out what to do. I'm trying to get my mom to order some stuff, but she's really morally conflicted about making people pack and deliver things with the coronavirus, which is understandable. I've changed about 40% of the water several times and I think that's helped but I don't really know what else I can do. I've tried to feed him but he hasn't eaten anything, at least nothing floating, and I'm kinda worried because I know these are in no way ideal conditions and I really don't want to kill him. If anyone has any advice, please let me know.

Do you have a aquarium filter? The reason your goldfish is not acting the way it should is most probably because of dirty water. I recommend you to clean your tank and put a hob (Hang on the back) filter if you don't have one. What size is your goldfish? Is it small or large? If it is small then it should be fine in there for a while, however if it is large you need to get him a larger tank. You also have to declorinate the water, I recommend 'API Stress Coat'. You also need beneficial bacteria for your tank, For the beneficial bacteria I recommend you to use 'API Stress Zyme'. Check your water parameters too. I hope that with my advice your goldfish will be hewlthy

I went to a pets store and decided to save a feeder fish that was 50cents, not knowing that it was not like a betta and that it needs a filter to have a long 15 to 20 year life. At the moment I can't afford a 10 gallon tank but in about 3 to 4 months I can get the filter, the tank, and all the proper things the goldfish needs. Is there any way I can keep the goldfish in the fish bowl for 3 to 4 months or if possible should I give it back to the pet store. I also got a plant to help with oxygen will it help him or harm him and will it make more waste? If it is possible to keep it in the bowl without the filter for that time period, how many time should I change the water to make sure the goldfish does not poison himself with his own waste. (It may just be a fish but it's a life and it deserves the best life It can possibly have) (I just want the best for it) Thank you

Feather Theshecat wow. I think it is amazing that you have rescued the fish and you are doing your best to look after them properly, so very well done! I would say that your fish should be fine just for a few months, after all, my mum had a goldfish that lived 10 years in a bowl! it is important to remember that all fish are different, so I don't want you to think I'm guaranteeing you won't have any problems with the bowl, but in my personal opinion (because everyone has different opinions), I think your fish will be fine and there isn't much need to give it back. After all, it's better living with you whilst you do your best with it than with someone who's going to feed it to bigger fish. With regards to the water changes, I would say probably just 10% every day, or every two days. after all, I don't know how much poop your goldfish produces, but I know mine produces a lot! I would say just keep a track of how much poop there is and decide it you feel it's right to change every day or every other day. sorry this is so long, but I hope I helped!
@Lifewithpets72
@Lifewithpets72 5 жыл бұрын
These fish can live a long time and will need a very large tank to give it the proper care it needs. Whilst saving a fish is a good thing to do, that is only if the proper care is given. If the goldfish is in a bowl and can be given daily 50-60% water changes it would be ok for a few weeks but beyond that it will not likely do well. Goldfish grow quickly so if you’re giving it the water changes and good food it will outgrow a bowl in just a few weeks. To properly care for a fish like this it will need a minimum tank of 55-75 gallons . These goldfish get 10-14 inches if given the right care. If you’re able to commit that level of care I’d say go for it and enjoy your new fish!

Which water parameters are so high that you have to do that many large water changes with a few small fish? You haven't even established a stable biological filter for the fish. Let me guess... Your tests show high ammonia and/or nitrite levels, and you keep changing the water to decrease it. You are forgetting the fundamentals of aquariums.
@Lifewithpets72
@Lifewithpets72 4 жыл бұрын
The tank is fully established. You guessed wrong...Ammonia 0, nitrite 0, it was the nitrates which were high. We have a canister filter along with two sponge filters. We have had the fish for years now and still have the same issue. We currently have 12 tanks and none of the others have the same high nitrates only the goldfish tank. Most goldfish keepers I know or follow water change large amounts at least once a week.

API liquid test and back then the results were between 80-160. Not as dark as the 160. For comparison our other tanks by the time we water change are at 40 or below. We have added a lot of pothos to the goldfish tank and that has made a difference so now we can change 50% once a week. They thrive on the water changes.

they suck in flakes too efficiently for other tank mates to compete. They grow fast while others starve. Advice: do not mix with other fish (other than a gulper catfish)

Is it to place a guppy in a fishbowl? I had to place it in there because my koi fish was always trying to eat it and the guppy is only hiding behind one of the filters where the koi won't get it. I feel sorry for it, it's not even swimming around with the other little fish, it's all by itself. I bought 10 of them and the koi ate them all with the exception of the one in the fishbowl.

if you don't have a filter then can you clean the tank every 5 days?
@Lifewithpets72
@Lifewithpets72 7 жыл бұрын
If you don't have a filter on a goldfish tank you should do at least 50% daily water changes. Goldfish fish produce loads of ammonia which is really bad for them. Goldfish need filtration in their tank.
@dimitris.4484

All fishes needs filters but for gold fishes the option of the filter and the tank space are the most important thing. Because they dont have a stomach they eat and poop a lot.

I love these goldfish. They're so interactive and always pleased to see you. I like the fact they get big. Mine are only small but have already grown a lot since getting them. They are a lot of work though. Lots of water changes. My big guy has been so sick. Lots of 80% daily water changes. It's looking like he's getting better but there's still a ways to go. The tropical fish are so much easier to care for!!

oh wow, i thought gold fish were the most hardy? thats why i said simple :p
@Lifewithpets72
@Lifewithpets72 8 жыл бұрын
People think they're hardy because they can tolerate poor water conditions for a long period of time but in reality they're just suffering. Most of their sickness comes from poor water quality. As you've seen we have lots of filtration on our tank, way over what you'd need normally but we're finding its not enough!! They produce so much waste that the bacteria cycle can't process it fast enough. This is why I'm having to do large water changes every 4-5 days. We're planning on changing the filtration up to see if it helps. I can't imagine what it will be like when they're big!!

When I had my 75 gallon tank going and tried to add plants the fish ate them. So instead I started throwing in scraps of veggies for them to eat. They grew huge lol and loved romaine lettuce and squash to float in the tank. For the added waste of eating fresh food compared to an all flake diet I had a 90 or 100 gal filter and an algae eater. Who grew from an inch and a half when I bought it to 14 inches. The fish all averaged btw 4-6". I miss my tank
