This song is based on an open letter published in 1961, from a World War II Veteran Brian Keith to his lover, a fellow soldier stationed with him in North Africa in 1943, Dave. To experience, to never have that experience again, and be left with amazing memories is such a bittersweet thought. This song is brilliant. Well done to Goldfrapp for making me teary. I have always felt that how a song touches you, whether viscerally or emotionally, is just as important, if not more so, than what the actual words or story convey. When I first heard this song I had no idea what the back story or lyrics meant historically. I could not shake the haunting beauty of the melody or Goldfrapp's incredible singing. Now that I know more, it's even more emotionally charged. But, regardless this is a masterpiece of melody, arrangement, and delivery. WOW!
