Thanks for simple explanation. I have bought an A4 book and have written out my first 50 French words. I really can't see how after two weeks I will remember these random words, however I am trusting the science and the long list of people who believe this system works. I spend quite a lot of time learning French and I am always looking for a better way to learn - so I am going to give this a go. Bon courage!!

I used to use it heavily with my Spanish learning some years ago. It really works. But there isn't anything magical in the 14 days' delay between distillations, mind you. It's just a reasonable period for preventing unnecessary work, that's it.

+Ivan Ivanov Awesome, I'm glad to hear it works for you too!
@ivanivanov55309 жыл бұрын
sdagf908346hg Thanks for the explanation of the idea I've understood years ago. Let me explain my perspective on the subject. There is no definite boundary between short- and long-term memory whatsoever. These two weeks is just a convenient and APPROXIMATE time period for avoiding unnecessary work. If you'd have a look at the forgetting curve you'd notice that after APPROXIMATELY 14 days the curve looks pretty much like a straight line. Basically it means that forgetting process is so insignificant now that you can dismiss it is still happening for the sake of conveniency. But the fact is, it never really stops and you'll be slowly forgetting any of your distilled material if you won't give it some refreshment at least sometimes. So don't expect miracles from the Goldlist method, it's just a useful tool and nothing more. P.S. It's not just my abstract reasoning, but my personal real-life experience. Good luck!

Great video, thank you. Other videos left out important information crucial to the method. A potential issue with this method: It does not allow for review of the previously "learned" vocabulary. Just because you remembered it once doesnt mean it's now there in your long term memory. Further review necessary of all the words on every head list and every distillation or you will not remember it very soon. So perhaps a smart modification would be to also review the orginal headlist every two weeks when you do your distillation.
@izumichan31 Жыл бұрын
I think it depends on if you're willing to have a word in more than one headlist or not. I don't worry if a word in headlist #1 ends up being written down again in headlist #20 or #45. If you forget a word you're likely going to be writing it down again and that's okay. Chances are the words you "know" are words you're seeing multiple times anyway through various sources anyway outside the headlists. You're not meant to exactly just be seeing them once. If you're going through a textbook(a good one anyway) you're probably going to see the words multiple times before you even get to distill. If you reading a book you'll run across the same vocabulary a lot. If you listen to lots of music you'll find a lot of similar words between songs. And so on.

The hardest part about this for me is that I started learning French in a classroom environment so it's hard for me to not focus on the correct conjugations for present future and past tenses. Basically as a classroom educated language learner I focus too much of grammar rather than just speaking. Now that I'm moving on to Spanish because it's most relevant currently I see the same patterns though I'm not as stringent. All in all I'm impatient but finally want to kick my butt into gear. A big part of me just wants to take 1 semester of beginner Spanish just to get my foot in the door I'm familiar with, then branch off from there.

How crucial is keeping the numbering? This confuses me somewhat. If I'm distilling words 751 - 775 into 751 - 767, then 751 - 762, 751 - 758, that's all well and good, but what about when you get to the silver book? You just abandon the numbering completely and start over? And if that's the case, why not just number every page 1 - 25?
@delionita6 жыл бұрын
I had the same question. I guess you only use numbers 1-25 and so on for your head list. It's a way of keeping track of how many words you know. When you're done with your bronze list you'll know you learned (hopefully) 3000 or however many words you got to. I'm not sure what you do after...

If you forget them, it probably wasn't important I don't think this method is good for actually remembering everything it's just supposed to help you learn vocabulary you've found somewhere. I'm pretty sure it would not make sense to just take a core 5k vocabulary anki deck and write headlists with it. but some people find SRS really soul crushing and would rather spend the time elsewhere. Hi thanks for the video, very helpful. i have a question. when u do your recall. whats the criteria you set to determine you've successfully recalled? Remembering both meaning AND pronunciation? I asked this because i'm learning japanese now and because i'm chinese, the meanings of the kanji words are easy for me. The hard part is the pronunciation, especially when to use kunyumi and onyumi. So in terms of recall getting the meaning is not a problem for me but the pronunciation is.
@chufflangs6 жыл бұрын
Japanese is a special case. The creator, David James, recommends that you make one line for each "unit of memory," so if there is a Japanese word which has two things you want to remember (世界 means world, it is pronounced sekai) then you would make it two lines. This way, if you remember the meaning but not the pronunciation, you won't carry the meaning with you to the next list where it doesn't belong. You are always focusing on only the vocabulary items that you struggle to remember.
@wretchedworm6 жыл бұрын
ok thanks for the explanation.

@seop17216 жыл бұрын
I watched a few explanations that didn't explain how to do it clearly. Now I know more. Brilliant. Thank you. Just two questions: Are you still writing other 20 plus headlists even when distilling? And do you need to flick back through pages to find the necessary dates to distill? (I'm attempting to imagine it, and it seems I will have to hunt through the book for the correct date when dealing with distillations.) Thanks! P.S. I suppose some sticker tags to bookmark the dates might work to make it easy to find, though that may get crowded very quick. P.P.S. The video is great, but a real life (even pretend) example would be wonderful.
@chufflangs6 жыл бұрын
When distilling you are taking out certain elements and rewriting what remains (that you didn't remember or combine or simply drop away). Only the headlist is more than 20 lines. I hope that answers your question. Sticker tags could certainly work. I use a very handy to-do app called Todoist where you can type in natural deadlines in your tasks like "every other friday" and it will automatically schedule them. One useful part of this app is the ability to use an exclamation point after the word "every" to make the next due date exactly 2 weeks away from the next time you complete it (to allow for times you don't distill on the exact day that it comes due) The result would be a to-do list line that is perhaps the page number of the book, which would read: "Page 4 every! 2 weeks" This would be a very automated and clean way to do it (but requires use of technology which might ruffle Davey's feathers). Notifications can also be configured in with this app.
@seop17216 жыл бұрын
Language Fan Thanks! I'll check it out. I watched a couple more videos and feel I now the system now. Figuring out how to find the right page and date of distillation is maybe something that will come when I start using it. I'll start today. A stupid question: Are you not supposed to encounter the words you've listed in every possible way (i.e reading the word, hearing the word on an audio, etc.) ever again until the 2 week period allotment?
@chufflangs5 жыл бұрын
The idea behind the method is that your long-term memory shouldn't be force-fed. Random encounters with the word is certainly not prohibited, but you don't want to interrupt the 2-week period if you can help it.
@jeffreyd5085 жыл бұрын
In short, is the system suggesting that writing a new word/senttence only four times or less in a period of two months, it will be in our long term memory?

I am confused as to what kind of words to write. Do I just think of words that might be useful (because that seems very tedious) or do I write every single word from a dictionary (because that seems very useless)? Some guides tell you to write "head words", but I am confused as to what is meant by that. Thanks, and great video!

The creator of the method recommends word frequency lists as a start. He also uses a dictionary, but since he's an accountant by trade and doesn't mind tedium, he doesn't recommend this for everyone because it would bore most people.

I don't really get the 30% part.....? is it possible to have more details?
@chufflangs9 жыл бұрын
+claudius2312 Two weeks after writing the headlist, you should remember 30% of it and remove it. Then write the remaining 70% you didn't remember as well as your first distillation. Two weeks after that, you should remember 30% of it again and remove it again... :)

but where do you take the words to write down? what should it be?
@chufflangs6 жыл бұрын
Many people take vocabulary lists, including frequency lists (for beginners). Depending on your level, you could also use unfamiliar words from a book you are reading.

I can't imagine being able to remember words out of context. Just grabbing a random list and hoping you'll remember the words is total nonsense. I choose words from readings I do or conversations I have with language partners. After I distill the words, I write sentences with them and submit them to be corrected on italki.

How would you get to distillation 7
@chufflangs6 жыл бұрын
The same way as the other distillations, but using the final distilled list from the previous book as your headlist.

ChuffTV2 what if you get all of them before that
