A really remarkable movie. Jeetendra is perhaps at his best. What a character portrayed by him and so naturally enacted too! Asha Parekh is in a very unglamorous role of a lower caste village girl. N. Dutta is so naturally beautiful in his creation of tunes. Ponchh kar ashq song shall remain as one of the sweetest songs by Rafi Sahab. Maine pee Sharaab song also remarkable song sung for a drunken and grievous ly hurt person. The lyrics by Sahir jee are beautifully written in a didactic strain in harmony with the theme, which is an appropriate one for its time. Thanks to Khalid Akhtar and Nadiwadwala saheb for giving India such a rare gift ,which perhaps reflect the inner spirit of India!

*Overall Rating 7 Stars out of 10 - Excellent Film* *REVIEW:* - A young wealthy Brahmin Thakur, Chander (Jeetendra) loses his father, decides to stay back in the village with his mother and forego his law practice in the city. He encounters a beautiful and charming village belle, Shallo (Asha Parekh) a woman of low caste origins (the untouchables) and the sister of a poor farmer Bansi (Balraj Sahni). Chander's mother Rukhmini (Veena) warns him to distance himself with the working class, yet he gets acquainted with Shallo and soon love blossoms between the two. One day Chander takes Shallo inside the temple and all hell breaks loose. The local upper class panchayat (Council) accuse Chander of defiling the sanctity of the temple and warn that this radical act would lead to his excommunication from the faith. They also threaten that the marriage of Chander’s sister Radha (Farida Jalal) would be stopped. Undeterred, Chander asks Bansi for Shallo’s hand in marriage and Bansi agrees. However, Rukhmini is opposed to this union. It seems as though the world is unwilling to accept Shallo’s good fortune and happiness. Pride, dignity respect, cultural traditions and family honor become the cancerous, lethal qualities, ready to destroy, ruin everything and no one is safe and immune from it. Caste discrimination seems to dominate the village and those who impose their moral views, threaten violence and intimidation. Dark and sinister conspiracies play out, leaving behind a trail of shattered lives, destruction, moral depravity, murder and mayhem. Poor Chander, exhibiting a naive sort of confidence in trying to set an example of a new way of thinking (Naya Raasta), in bringing about a change in primitive concepts, realizes too late when his idealism blows up in his face. A well written script by Kaushal Bharti and excellent direction by Khalid Akhtar, the plot exposes one of the many social evils that exist in Indian society. All other technical elements of the film are excellent with several hit songs. The performances by Jeetendra, Asha Parekh, Veena, Balraj Sahni, Farida Jalal and the villain Kishen Mehta are flawless. The film is a highly charged social drama and with a fast paced tempo, the film is pretty enjoyable.
