Gold Shaw Farm

5 жыл бұрын

A few friends challenged me to explain my ultimate homestead goal. I will, just as soon as I fix this dang water hydrant.

About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

It’s ok not to have a specific goal in mind especially if you think of homesteading and self sufficiency in terms of, “This is a thing we’re doing now,” and not, “This is a thing we should be working on.” Great video! Thanks for participating!

Good answer Morgan. Slow and steady wins the race. It's better to hone down one or two things on the homestead before branching out to more animals etc. I see some homesteads get into too many animals and such too quickly and it turns out to be more stress than a blessing. Stay warm and hope your water problem is fixed soon. Have a super day!

I want to say too that I believe farming and homesteading are also in a way preserving a way of life , holding onto a piece of history that ultimately has a positive effect on not only the homesteader but friends, family and the community. 😊

Collect snow in the buckets, bring them into the house to melt. At least it could give you a head start in the morning if it was melting over night. That way it cuts down on spigot use.

I’m 4 years late, but wondered how it’d be to create almost A containable fire pit to melt snow to become water in a scenario like this…? But the cold, n cold wind might make it difficult to start/sustain the fire…?but I wonder if in similar situations this can be a valuable solution. Anywho, been binge watching you, enjoy seeing your journey. :)

Being this much cold in VT means you run the risk of frozen pipes through winter’s sub zero days.. Perhaps you might consider running your pipeline underground, which is much warmer than the surface. You can double check this fact by running temperature probes through your top soil. Actually it surprises me you pumping fresh water at the barn when there is plenty snow over the ground. There’s got to be something I do not know about your water pipeline. On a change of subject, you might not be aware, but your narrative is getting people hooked upon. I bet you have a lot folks rooting for you and see where it all goes.

Can't you still use frozen eggs? I know you can freeze the yolk and white after cracking the eggs. Would a tile drain/small tunnel from the low spot in the barn be helpful with the water build-up? I feel for you trying to get stuff done in the middle of winter :(
@GoldShawFarm
@GoldShawFarm 5 жыл бұрын
If the eggs don't visibly crack, we will still eat them (quickly). If they are cracked, I usually thaw them and feed Pablo and Lil. A tile drain might work, but it's a tough thing to pull of in the middle of winter. I'm starting to get a plan B worked out.

The problem with goals is that you can achieve them. Then what? I say I have guidelines that are specific and my goal is almost too lofty to ever be completed. That way I keep learning, pushing, and growing even if I achieve a goal. Problem with me is that unfortunately with depression and some other issues, I find it hard to keep pushing which sucks but having guidelines and not hard specific goals means I don't look at myself as a total failure when I can't get to a final specific goal. It allows me to keep working on myself also which is something I have to work very hard to do. I like that you don't have an absolute answer for what your goal is.

@@GoldShawFarm I bet this has been settled long since, but whatever office in Peacham handles building permits and land titles might have a scale drawing of your property that would include the spring box location.
