My new years resolution: clean my clubs with a wet towel (even though it is a bit of a pain when you "carry"). I love to play courses that have the ball/club cleaners on the cart -- having it there means it gets used and having a clean iron/wedge every time saves strokes.

Really good video, interesting to learn about the grooves i totally thought it was the grooves that produced spin, i brushed mine before ever shot lol i will pay attention to the face more. Thanks Eric and Andrew. Great job always learning.

I clean my clubs religiously but I do think switching to my 56 more would be a good idea. Heard vokey thinks the same for spin but I feel comfortable with how far the 60 goes. Think I'll suck it up and lower the loft for some rounds and see how I get along. Great video Eric!

Thanks Eric, great video! On from this theme, could you please consider doing one with Andrew on a simple feedback station (without monitor) to measure if we are keeping our launch angle down at around 25-30deg with all our wedges...?
@CogornoGolf5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes-that sounds good! Hopefully we get to film with Andrew again in the future. A nice way to do that would be to to put 2 alignment rods a few feet in front of you with a string line tied across where you have to hit under it. I saw that at Ben Pellicani's range the other day...not sure if he has other videos on it...may also be able to find one in Mike Benders videos

Eric Cogorno Golf I believe James Ridyard is your man for this. Sorry I can't figure out how to post the screenshot I've got so I'll try and explain. To set up a 30* launch trajectory gate use the following calculation - Distance x 0.58. E.g., If you position a gate (perhaps consisting of 2 alignment sticks with tape between them like a soccer goal) at 2 metres from your ball then the height of the tape should be 1.16m. All balls should launch under this tape to be in your 30* trajectory target. Obviously I'm using metric as I'm from UK but to use feet/inches you basically just calculate in inches. E.g., 8 feet becomes 96 inches x 0.58 which equals approx 55 inches, so set your gate up with the 'crossbar' at a height of 4'7" (55 inches). Hope that helps. Sorry if a bit long winded but can't copy pic I have. I'm sure James would be happy for people to google his stuff via KZbin as he has lots of good content out there related to the wedge game 👍

Most interesting fact to me was diminishing spin returns as loft goes up- e.g. big loss beyond 58 deg! I play 58, 54 and have been practicing Eric's distance ladder with my 54. Until now, have been wondering why not 58--now I know why! Maybe w/ your fitter guy, we can look at when to replace a wedge and how to think about wedge grinds, e.g. "M" grind, "F" grind.

So, if the purpose of the grooves is to channel / hide moisture & matter, why are the grooves not vertical...or at least diagonal...instead of horizontal??

Could you define "premium wedge", please. Examples. How do they differ from a "typical" wedge?

Think of the most popular 3 wedges you could think of of see on tour.....that would be premium. Think of the 3 wedges you NEVER see on tour.....that would be not premium. The popular brands....

I love this channel Eric. I think it is one of the best golf instruction channels on you tube. However, whenever I see titles like "How to bomb it like Tiger" or "how to make contact like Sergio" I cringe. " How to spin it like the pros" falls into that category. The plain truth is that most of us who watch golf channels like these will never be able to do ANYTHING like the pros. That's why they're pros. How about something like "try to be better than you are at.........(fill in the blank). It's not as sexy, I know. But at least it's reasonable. Next we will have to measure every dimple on every ball to make sure we have even distribution. At my level (15 HC) I can't afford premium balls or pro caliber wedges. Come on guys, get real. @@CogornoGolf Interesting thoughts on this video! I'm about a 16 HC and I don't bomb it off the tee (maybe drive it 220-240 max. But I have Vokey Titleist wedges (50, 54, 58) and practice pitching and chipping more than anything. It's the strongest part of my game. I play quality balls, Pro V, Taylormade, Callaway etc. I don't lose balls very often, maybe on average one every few rounds. I don't hit greens in regulation well but my wedges and putting save my scores. Recently I had 25 putts in a round mostly because of my wedge play and I was also putting well that day. That was no greens in regulation too! ;( I used to play the Vokey Oil Can wedge that was manufactured before the 2010 groove rule. Andrew's statement about the purpose of the grooves surprised me. I thought that compressing the ball on the club face allowed the grooves to bite into the ball and created more spin. I know my old Oil Can wedge could stop a chip or pitch immediately. Didn't matter if I hit it thin on low trajectory or a normal contact that got up in the air. My current wedges do not react the same as the Oil Can. Also, I don't see an issue with playing good quality wedges and balls based on HC levels. thanks for the good instruction!

Not 100% sure but I would assume to eliminate the variability of the turf interaction to make the example as simple as possible.

😀, but I must say now I know what the grooves are really there for, why not to clean only the grooves, and the bell curve between spin rate and club loft which helps me better to understand where I should be aiming to land my ball with my 64. I've known to keep clubs/wedges clean for like 5 years, but now truly know why & how.

I do used top ended wedges Titliest SM7 52,56 and 60, I clean them with both a tee and wet towel, I also use a premium golf ball TPX 5, and I and do strike the ball first but am unable to spin the ball backwards - so I totally disagree with his prospective on how the pro’s spin there golf ball!
@502spyder5 жыл бұрын
Peter Crocitto exactly , why would I want to land 2 feet from the pole and spin it 6 back now having to make a 8 foot putt ?
@CogornoGolf5 жыл бұрын
Hey Peter. Thanks for the feedback! Andrew never claimed anything about spinning it "back". Just giving great advice for golfers on how to maximize their spin with wedges when needed. If you use top end wedges, clean them well, use a premium ball and strike the ball first (as you mention) and cannot spin the ball well I would look at 2 things 1. The course conditions 2. Your technique and strike point on face. The pros only spin in BACK because of the course conditions (in addition to the comments above) Thanks for your view point-wish you all the best golf moving forward!
@rohitpratap41745 жыл бұрын
@@CogornoGolf totally agree. When I get the rare chance to play premium courses with USGA green quality the ball does spin back up to 3 yards for higher flighted well struck wedges (never happens on home course)
@ballerbilliards5 жыл бұрын
Getting enough spin to bring it back requires clubhead speed - that happens with full shots only, where you’ll get >10,000 rpm and a steeper descent angle (IF you have the speed). Also need a soft green, of course.

I don't believe Andrew Rice; moreover, I think his advice enables him to sell more Volkie wedges and Pro V1 golf balls. I don't think he knows how to spin a golf ball, but I think others do. I don't play brand new golf balls, but I do clean my clubs, however, I'm not obsessive about it. In spite of that, I have hit shots that spun like crazy; yet, I have no idea why. I watch a lot of women's golf because those ladies wear such skimpy & tight clothing that it makes it easier to see what their arms, legs, shoulders, etc are doing in a golf swing. What I've noticed is that almost all the top lady golfers can spin the ball. They all use the best clubs, the best balls and they all have caddies who keep their equipment clean; yet, some hit the stop & spin better than others. To me, that means there's talent & technique involved in hitting the spin shot. I proved that to myself by getting fairly good with a cut shot when I chip. I can put a lot of spin on those short shots by swinging outside in and across the ball. I have nothing against Andrew Rice, but why don't you find another teacher who is well-known for his or her ability to spin the ball. Do another show on this topic because this one was a bust. In fact, now I'm going to search for a character whose short game was renown. His nickname was Little Poison. Let's see what he has to say about spinning the ball.
