This week’s Genesis Invitational at The Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles sees all of the world’s top 10 players in action. The 2021 winner and local favorite, Max Homa, will look to retain the title he won in dramatic fashion after beating Tony Finau in a two-hole playoff. Homa will be hoping to become the first player to win back-to-back titles at The Genesis Invitational since Phil Mickelson in 2009. World No. 1 Jon Rahm will be looking to improve upon his T5 finish last year, in which he shot an impressive 6-under par 66 in his final round, but fell five shots short of the lead. Having not won a professional title since the Masters in November 2020, Dustin Johnson will hope to rediscover some of the form that saw him win at The Riviera Country Club in 2017. FedExCup leader Hideki Matsuyama, Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth are but a few more names to watch among the star-studded field in California.

The hole is way more fun when it's set up that way. This year it's a par 3.8 and it's a simple hole, just hit it just short and a little to the left and you have a straightforward 30 yard pitch

@@DanielSong39 I think the reason they go for it is because the way the green is shaped anything short unless perfectly placed is very difficult to even hit the green. Even back in the trees long they seem to be able to chip it and it is at least uphill from there. Still a fun hole to watch.

@@mrvlsmrv That's another hole that would benefit from a harder green I would like them to add a slope on the right side of the green that sends the ball into the water. That way if you bail out left you have to aim 5-10 feet left of the tucked right side pin or you can putt your ball in the water

I've played it (10 at Riviera). The green is devilish, and razor thin--way more than the TV shows you. I saw Jack Nicklaus hit a pitch from hard pan to a few feet. Not the skill he was known for, but it impressed me more than anything else I saw him do. Pros are just leagues better than we are throughout the bag.

I worked that hole this year and it can be brutal. You have to land your tee shot in the perfect spot to have a chance. I saw at least 15 players leave it in that front bunker by trying to barely get it over the top edge. We did see a few eagles with guys chipping it in from the perfect spot including Colin Morikawa on Sunday. Several players had to chip their second shots after driving the front left edge of the green because you couldnt putt it far enough right to get close to the hole.

@hound ; true, the unwritten rule of golf - you should be rewarded for a good shot and punished for bad. A good approach to green should see the ball roll towards the green and stays. Same like you drive off the tee, making it long and centre of fairway, there shouldn't be a trap, bunker or pond there..!! ah well, golf... 😁🙄

Difficulty on a course or hole is a hard thing to balance on tour. As equipment and players improve the courses can end up too easy. I like having some courses easier and having some more difficult ones. It is a true test for the best players in the world; however, there is definitely a line. As long as some golfers can find success on a hole I don't see it as too hard for the pros. Nothing wrong with being punished by a hole if you don't play it right. If you're good enough to par or birdie something as tough as this hole you deserve a shot or two advantage over those who can't. If your success on the hole relies on luck more than skill it's too difficult. I don't necessarily have a problem with an "impossible shot" if you had a real chance before to put yourself in a better position. As an amateur myself, there's no way I'd play this hole in this condition though. This difficulty should really be reserved for the best in the world unless people really want to play it.
@tokyworld
@tokyworld 2 жыл бұрын
If I know beforehand the difficulty of the hole (as a bogey golfer) I'd play to lay up and try to chip from the front of the green. A double bogey wouldn't be good but it wouldn't be a tragedy either.
