Yep. Twenty years ago we were taught at first parallel toe up, hinge up, with over rolling of the hands and arms at impact. This "lag" led to the opposite by flipping, steep, high hands, in to out lunging, and wildly inconsistent shots. When the timing was on, I hit the ball great with a perfect draw. Most days on the course, not so much. It took me 40 years to realize I had been swinging the club wrong all my life. Now my left wrist is bowed by time it gets to the top with zero hinge and I maintain that wrist condition and "lag" {i.e. shaft lean) towards impact by lower body rotation. My swing has been transformed because of instruction like this video. I have gone from a good 12 handicap, where I was for years, to a solid 6 in less than a year because of this change in swing philosophy. Golf is fun again!

This is the best description of this that I have found anywhere on the internet. Superb! I think this cupping phenomenon is why I am personally more comfortable with a strong right hand grip. It feels far more natural to rotate without any cupping when I have a strong right hand than a neutral one. It does have negative knock-on effects for my follow-through…

This is the video I needed to see! I figured this out myself over the last few months and have been hitting bombs off the tee since. But if you try searching for info about removing lag you just get bombarded with crap like, "secret lag move to add 50 yards" There's thousands of videos out there basically telling me I'm wrong but I'm glad I found this one which backs up my own ideas. Good work!

Right again! When I've tried to "create" lag I hit terrible shots. Lag is an illusion from a 2D face on view. Lag appears to increase when players lay off the club on the down swing. For me trying to create lag with wrist hinge increases muscle tension in the arms and wrists. My swing thoughts are: take away wide and don't worry about hinging, at the start of the down swing I rotate the forearms slightly away from the target and bow the lead wrist just before impact. That's what is working for my swing. I'm hitting much more accurate shots, both distance and direction. I also have gained at least 10 yards for my irons. Thanks to Eric for instruction that is to the point and very clear!

Agree. You use the word slightly which is helpful as overdoing a move can wreak havoc as well. A little goes a long way in golf in many aspects of the game.

Eric, i hit the ball a long way. I am 52 and still getting over 300 with driver, i hit 280 3 woods and i dont think i have ever... not once in my life... ever thought about lag. If all fundamentals are correct in my backswing the downswing will be correct and lag just happens without even considering it.

Thats awesome, Ron! Good stuff. Of course if you already do something without thought you do not need to add thought. BUT....what if someone doesn't do it without thought? Then they need to train it of course.

To answer. 15 years. This epic eye opener about our perception of how the swing works is jarring, hilarious, and welcomed. Thank you and I will whole heartedly agree you are right and 95% of all instruction on YT is vague and misconceptualized. Honestly has finally come to instruction.

Very well done. I feel most of us have confused lag and shaft lean. If we could all generate more shaft lean, I think we would show great improvement. When I started 55 years ago, none of this information and video was available. We did what we thought we "saw" the pro's doing, and fashioned a swing that made sense to us.......wrong!
@CogornoGolf6 жыл бұрын
Agreed with the confusion part. The only caveat I would say to "more shaft lean better" thought is there is a speed component. Meaning...if you have a lot of speed then yes lots of shaft lean is good but if you have less speed then you don't want as much lean...some...but too much means you're loose distance (dyanmic loft and launch angle too low for slow speed)
@pmckay72216 жыл бұрын
You are right. BTW, I live in western Canada and have followed a few people on You for a while but find your approach to be the best Just the right amount of detail and great explanations about each component.

Great video. I am using the Golf Impact Swing Trainer (you recommended it in another video) and am getting much better extension and solid ball contact. Lag looks cool but as you note it creates problems like weak high shots to the right for me which I have suffered with for many years. Thanks for clearing this up!

Listen to this guy. I have been struglin with the F...... cup release for over 20 years when a PGA coach told me about it last year. I have never hit the ball better since after I made the change from cup to flat wrist. It still comes back now and then but know I know what it is and I can do something about it.

Hey Eric...since trying to employee this bogus lag idea to my swing, I as a 40-yr old right handed golfer have noticed pain in the back of my right hand where the hand and wrist meet...I never thought the pain and my goal of creating lag might be connected until I saw this video. You mentioned issues with the left hand. Could attempting to create lag be injuring my right hand? I can hardly swing a golf club at this point and am at a loss as to what happened. Thanks.
@CogornoGolf4 жыл бұрын
Hey Andrew! Could be. I do not know! I would consult with a physical therapist or someone locally and certainly wouldn't do a movement that caused pain!
@TheBoomBapp6 жыл бұрын
YES, I thought this way and I thought it would give my that ball mashing compression and help me to take a shallow divot and ball first contact. I have yet to accept I don't know what I am doing to swing the way I want but I know I can.

Took me along time to figure this out on my own! Was told i need to do this and get my shoulders at 90 degrees ,worst thing i was told by some so called pro teacher and did nothing but ruined my love for the game ..When i realized this was not the case turning only 80 degrees and having natural wrist angle (not forced) everything came together ....

Me, a 56 year old beginner..... months watching hundreds of instruction videos on KZbin....... last 20 or so on...... lag.... I come across the guy telling me to NOT do it! 😂 Oh well, I can see the wisdom in his advice, especially with irons. For an amateur it really would require much more exact timing to pull it off. But I'll probably still practice lag with my driver. Since it's such a longer swing, with more time before contact, I'm pretty sure adding (at least some) lag with the driver isn't quite as critical timing wise, and it REALLY adds effortless speed.

Eric- a stupid question perhaps. Is 'width' best maintained by (left) wrist condition or by right arm (elbow) structure. Perhaps both?
@CogornoGolf6 жыл бұрын
Either...or both... Right arm is a big one! So are wrist conditions :)
@1wfunston14 жыл бұрын
How about creating lag with your trailing wrist at the start of your downswing? Letting the trailing wrist cup will have the opposite effect on the leading wrist which will bow slightly, keeping the face closed

Hogan created a big angle when his arms dropped due to hip turn, but he gave up half the angle before the impact zone. Just kept the right amount to unleash his right hand and arm.
