Greetings MARTIN and thanks for your video. I think I will add a bit of clarity to your discussion. The body ( core ) does most of the work ( energy). As you know work is force over distance. The arms and club ( the power accumulators ) gather the work and multiply it into power. As you power is work in time. The hands , arms and wrists do very little work but they do provide for the power. The distance from the ball the club travels is as you know a form of radius power such that the longer the radius the greater the power accumulated. As for the ground you must press into it because the club is coming “down” hence you must press up. Equal and opposite reaction. The speed as you know is quickly multiplied at uncocking because the club wants to seek and fulfill its inline condition. The power is then released into the ball ( momentum transfer ). It must be such a joy to work with Blair ; she seems so genuine and has an excellent on plane motion. Cheers F

I actually like this advice. After reading some golf instruction books from Ernest Jones and Manuel dela Torre and trying to implement I think my game went off track a bit as I concentrated on the hands and arms component of the swing. I am sure if I was lucky enough to be personally taught by them, the results would be a lot better but I think I will try this advice here with the driver and see what happens.

I think that if you move only your arms and hands you will hit the ball further than using only your body.... I think what Mike Malaska teaches make more sense to me at least.... Ciao from Italy

I think you are wrong. Try it. I mean really try it. See how far you can hit a ball with wrists only. Don't rotate at all. Then try wrists and arms without rotation. When I REALLY try this I don't really use the arms much at all with out rotation. Actually I can only move the club back a few inches without rotation. When you look at Mike Malaska doing those drills he is definitely rotating!

Being 73 with a bad back I find it hard to coil my body so I rely on a full early wrist hinge to produce decent club head speed & good contact most the time

Arms hands wrist move faster than hips can move it's a combination of all body parts at speed creates distance.

A sport Journalist said in the 1920s "Everything that can be written about golf has been written about golf, now watch the marketers come along and stuff it up." This sort of stuff is bad for your back, it doen't matter how much you THINK you are engaging the core, these people have no idea what the "core" is for a start. Hitting the ball this way, gives you a bad back. Using these techniques, twisting and hitting with your back muscles is bad for you. As for hitting with your arms and hands, well I played with a Tongan off Scratch that could drive a ball 340m using just his arms and shoulders, there was grip on the ground, but everyone has feet that can hit a ball that far... he had no back swing to talk about. NONE. Hold the club in your hands, it's your hands that hit the ball, stop holding in your fingers, and using your spine to hit the ball. Using your spine is stupid, and doesn't help at all. Hold in hands for a neutra grip, one piece takeaway, turn your hips, do nothing with your arms, when you have shifted onto your back foot, finish the turn with your shoulders, cock wrists at the top, then CAST AT THE TOP.... into your shoulders, once your arms and hands return to the shoulders, UNWIND........ by casting at the top you are taking advantage of the club at it's LIGHTEST point... releasing at the ball means you have to overcome the momentum of the club, this doesn't happen at the top... the club being CAST becomes your momentum and will drag your body through the ball, ad your feet to the equation and you can accelerate the club at will to it's fullest potential HARDLY USING YOUR BACK MUSCLES AT ALL... Holding in your hands means you can feel the club all the way through the swing, taking advantage of knowledge.... when you screw up you feel it and can change it.......... get away from the Hogan bullshit... STOP HURTING YOUR SPINES... CORE STRENGTH???? phewwww good luck especially when you don't know what the core is.... I emphasise this, please go away and learn about core strength.

Is there a video of your explanation on the swing. I'm interested the swing and how the grip works holding it on your hands.

5:09 "Having made that great big turn there, you want to shift your weight and rotate, and then you apply the force with your hands and arms". That clearly states that it is a COMBINATION of body and arms and hands that generate power and speed in his type of swing. He NEVER said it's JUST body. Read the title of the video. This video is about which part of the body produces more. Not which part produces nothing. His contention is that the body produces MORE than arms/hands do. Now there are more ways than one to skin a cat in golf and Martin being very knowledgeable in The Golfing Machine (TGM) knows that very well. There are 3 techniques used in golf to generate clubhead speed. 1. The swinging technique. Players that use it are called "swingers" 2.The hitting Technique. Players using it are called "Hitters" 3. Players who combine the 2 are known as " Switters". A swinger gets most of his power from body rotation. The arms and hands just come along for the ride. Body is the car, arms and hands are the passengers. If you don't believe that's possible, here is a one armed golfer hitting a 288 yard drive. ALL body rotation. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3-3qJZ_hL-omtE The hitter gets his power from applying a pushing force on the shaft using the right side of the body which includes the arms and hands. Its brute muscle power used mostly by strong athletic players who don't have a lot of flexibility to make full shoulder turns. They have a 3/4 backswing and look a little violent in the transition. Here is JB Holmes busting one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mITWkptvmtGohKc Martin , although he did not come out and say it directly, was talking about a switter technique, which combines swinging and hitting. Hence I put his statement in quotes at the beginning of this comment. Here is Steve Elkington giving a great explanation of this style. Guys using it have a very smooth , effortless swing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZDRlqFjaLKGeLs All 3 techniques require ground force as Martin talked about. The pushing off the ground part of the swing. You couldn't hit a ball very far if you were suspended in air. You would have nothing solid to push off of. Hope this clears up all the misunderstandings about what produces what when it comes to powering the golf swing. You're welcome.😎

Interesting comment. I think the issue with golf instruction is it generally falls into the category of theory. This whole difference between swinging hitting sweating. All of it depends on the individual but the golf swing is a coordinated movement of a bunch of different elements! In other words there is no engine it's a complex network of engines. You can't look at a long drive person swing and say one thing is generating more power than the other. This is the problem with getting into Theory. What generates the speed? Is it the releasing of the wrist? Is it the arm swinging fast? Is it the hips moving in a certain direction at a certain speed? Is it the club whipping? The answer is yes and yes and yes and yes. Trying to isolate what is first and secondary and third doesn't work in a golf swing.

The arms move fast in the golf swing....but they are not the source. They transfer speed to shaft then on to the club head. That is what was proven by the swings from the chair by the dramatic drop in force production because the body has nothing to create leverage against i.e. the ground and the weight of the club. Martin is correct.

She had to PUSH OFF the ground to get her feet airborne. She couldn't hit it much past her shadow if you suspended her in the air like Peter Pan on Broadway, then let her hit a ball.

Anchor a club contraption to your body and whip those hips. You won’t get more than 15% of your normal distance. Where do you think the other 85% comes from?

Just because they write their names on their golf bags (how vain is that) they believe they are arbiters of truth. Henry Cotton maintained that the hands and forearms are 85% of the golf swing with the body only contributing 15%.The body legs and feet are a platform that let the hands and arms deliver the necessary speed and accuracy. How often do you see tournament pros seemingly effortlessly hit irons so much further than handicappers. For example look at John Rahm. His arms accelerate terrifically through the ball. You hold the club with your hands and you swing it with your arms. The faster and stronger your arms and hands and wrists the more compression and therefore the greater distance. It's also one of the reasons why short swingers still hit the ball a long way.

Do you know the difference between WORK and POWER. IF you do then it’s clear the arms and club multiply the power and the pivot does the work. That book you quoted was truly the rubbish. At least get your logic correct. Cheers F

Hands and arms produce speed not power, this video series is so contradictory, he just hit the ball 150 yards sitting on a chair with just arms and hands and still maintains distance comes from body movement??? Most people can't hit the ball 150 yards because they use way too much body movement. Rubbish, Good luck, Nigel PGA pro.

I like Martin Hall and his program. But having competent golfers, like Sarah or Blair on the show, and not giving them much chance to talk and giving monologues, kind of spoil the show a bit. It can be a bit more interactive, and Sarah and Blair need not come across mannequins and puppets of patriarchy.

Arms and hands produce more swing speed than body rotation. The body only rotate because of the pulling gravity made by the arms and hands rotation. I do not follow this golf channel learning lesson because it is all BS
