I made a 6 on the 17th hole but only remember my drive that almost took a cocktail out a a person on an upper floor balcony. My drive turned out to be perfect - dead center of the fairway but the road by the green took its toll on me. A truly great course that is so much fun to play, if you have the right attitude.

Having visited St. Andrew's in 1995 and been able to walk 1-2-3 then 16-17-18 back then it always strikes me that no one ever mentions the wind. It is a consistent 15-20 mph. That has to be recognized as a factor. That being said, I am a hack golfer, and when I stood on the 17th tee the first thing I thought was "no effing way" I could hit that tee shot. A great memory! I even have a picture of me on the bridge on 17 than Arnold Palmer made famous later that year!

thanks for sharing, Matt. i did the same but a mere fourteen days ago at St. Andrews! and under similar conditions! i concur that this is no more than an easy municipal golf course under benign conditions. however with a gusty wind, it can be quit beastly! crack on mate!

I have played St Andrews. It is the most over rated course. If it was not the first golf course it would not be on anyones radar. And no way they should have a professional tournament there. The setting and the history part of it is awesome but I would not go back and play again. So many better courses in Scotland......not sure why no one will admit this?

@lawrencel1002 жыл бұрын
You are of course entitled to your opinion but i will never understand such comments, the oldest 18 holes in the world will of course be outdated! but that link to ground zero is what's special. It has progressed and remains a challenge, to say it provides no drama is an absolute untruth, but it's important that we retain this piece of heritage.
@sandersson28132 жыл бұрын
@@lawrencel100 The first Open was held at Prestwick, it's been held at Musselburghb and it's been held at Royal Cinque Ports, so if they all have history, why isn't it played there any more? The history of a town doesn't make it a good venue. Goodison is an old stadium with history, but you wouldn't hold the Champions League final there . It is by far the weakest course on The Open rota, if not of all the majors. There are far too many easy holes, the fairways too wide, most bunkers not in play and the greens are too easy to hit. The closing stretch is poor and the course simply isn't capable of the drama one gets at Muirfield, Carnoustie, Troon or Portrush.
@lawrencel1002 жыл бұрын
@@sandersson2813 and yet every course you just mentioned doesn't have the design and architecture heritage of the Old Course, which is the premise of my point. Using Goodison to reinforce your point is a false equivalency, unless it was the first football pitch by which all others take their design cues?
