I appreciate his candidness about the psychological edge that the 5th hole lost when they made it a par 5. It’s one of the lesser known issues in course design when counteracting the long hitters on the tour.

It really makes no difference because you're playing the field. So they could make every hole a Par 3 and it wouldn't change the way it plays. They'd just all be shooting one or two over par, and they'd still be playing against the field.
@joellahrman45573 ай бұрын
@@steverupert6988 that is of course true. I wouldn't call it a psychological edge as much as a change to approaching that green with a wedge. In 1993 I played in the North South Junior Amateur at #2. I hit four perfect drives on the 5th hole, and had a 4 or 5 iron in each day. There was simply no hitting that green with those clubs. At least for someone of my skill (I was barely good enough to play in that tournament). Of course I could have hit wedge-wedge into the green, maybe that would have served me better. I do remember hitting very good solid second shots but none of them wound up on the green.

Love these videos. I would even watch it about a random public course in a small town.

I love these "The Hole At" videos. A hole that I would love to see an analysis of is the third hole at NGLA. It's easily my most favorite par 4 in the entire world. You might ask why, but it's because of how the tee shot is played and what the hole presents angle-wise. The fairway's low and high adds intriguing characteristics with a punchbowl-like green at the end of the ridge. The amount of angles you can play into this green is insurmountable. Way to go on this series. Keeps me coming to this channel all the time.

Can he do a breakdown of hole 16 at Muirfield Village following this last year’s changes? I’d be interested to see a deep dive on it since players are often caught on hot mic saying that it’s “one of the stupidest holes in golf”

Great analysis of a hellish course. It would be great to see you do an old course no longer in the rota, such as Miami Springs Golf Course where they held the Miami Open nearly 100 years ago and Jackie Gleason's favorite course in Miami.

Some good "hole at"s would be like the original Redan or original Alps holes at N. Berwick or Prestwick; the biarritz at Yale. An every hole at would be even better :) And of course Troon: Postage Stamp or Rail hole.

I think 16 at Pasatiempo is a more interesting bit of architecture.

I get why people are upset this isn't the bear of a par 4 it used to be, but it makes a much better par 5 than the 4th hole did. 4 was a boring straightaway par 5 without much strategy and it was a benign green. I think it plays better as a long par 4, and this hole makes a better par 5
