Yep even on doors that don’t come that way alot of them end up getting cut away because the door gets slightly tweaked and the driver gets tired of fighting with it and cuts it so it latches easier
@lightshow10
@lightshow10 3 жыл бұрын
Yea. It’s the latch. One of the comments said the latches do that on lots of the trucks. Which is true. Case in point is look the fuel area on all 2006 dodge Durango’s. They all rust out in the same exact way. The same place. And are all rusted about the same amount. The reason for this was a defective valve in the fuel filler neck. When fueling it would cause the fuel to back up and spill over the body of the truck. Over time this ate away at the paint allowing it to rust there more quickly than others. So could it be the same truck? Sure. It would only make since that it was. But is there proof. Not really. Just some food for thought.

I drove one of these trucks in 1978. All the pete cabovers are notched out there. As others have said it is where the door latches. Look to the left of the pic and you can see the latch on the door. Lines up perfectly. One thing you don't point out that I noticed is the location of the air intake on or near the roof of the truck. In all your examples they are in a different location including some that are not visible at all because they are mounted behind the cab. Some are not roof mounted on that model of Peterbilt. That is something that varied on this model cabover depending on the engine and intake options.

if you look at the opened door you can see a metal piece (i imagine to lock the door) and this goes exactly into the place where the weather stripe goes. For me it's not a missing piece ... it was there on purpouse.

The truck.from "No Big Thing" is also a sleeper cab. It has a twin size bed behind the seats. Goliath is commonly referred to as a "double bunk" and it has what is basically a queen size bed behind the seats. They also usually have a little bit more cabinet and storage space at the end of the mattress and around the top of the bunk area. If the cab is cut off right behind the entry doors then there is no bunk or sleeper and it.is referred to as a day cab. Also, the small doors low on the sleeper sides are officially known as luggage compartments but referred to by drivers as the side box.

A truck that is 50 years old chances are it is not road worthy nor has been for a very long time. Doesnt mean it is not around. It could be rotting in someone's field, or stored in a farm barn, or even a salvage yard. It is amazing you guys found the 2nd truck and the original hauling trailer used in the show. Great Video, thanks for all you do
@ltd4all
@ltd4all 3 жыл бұрын
That truck, being a cabover design, was likely scrapped not long after 1984, since NOBODY enjoyed driving a cabover for long hauls, and by design, they were unsafe, as well as being a PAIN to maintain and preform repairs on, since the entire cab had to be raised (often daily) to perform a trucker's daily inspection, meaning that EVERYTHING in the sleeper would end up being pushed against the dashboard that wasn't fastened down....random clothing, and personal effects (toiletries, shaving kits, etc.) would be tossed around the entire driver's area of the cab, and extremely inconvenient for a driver to have to tidy up every morning. plus, newer tractors were infinitely safer, with more of a crumple zone buffer for the driver, COE (Cab Over Engine) trucks were known for throwing drivers through the windshield, or having objects penetrate the windshield, and impaling the driver. not to mention that a 1070's spec truck would get TERRIBLE fuel mileage compared to the rigs of today. It would be incredibly rare for ANYONE to have kept a COE truck, in running order for so long, let alone having one rotting in some "random field" because it was used in a TV show....Another thing to consider, is that very few COE tractors had air conditioning, because the driving position was directly over the engine, and heat rises, so even the best A/C units couldn't keep the cab cool, especially in California's climate. COE tractors were the "Chevy Chevettes" of their time.....And you NEVER see them around anymore, and for good reason. my feeling is that the truck you're looking for is LONG GONE, and is probably a can of creamed corn by now.
@austenalgaier1122
@austenalgaier1122 3 жыл бұрын
All the trucks of Europe and much of the rest of the world are COE also mpg isn’t much different believe it or not. At least when comparing 4stroke DI turbodiesels to more modern 4stroke DI TD’s. But for American truckers I think you are right about the COEs. Nowadays the COEs are all over truck shows though. Here in the south at least.
@ciddax754
@ciddax754 3 жыл бұрын
While the European Trucks are almost all COE, I guess they addressed some of the problems better then those american COE had. That being said, I seems for me very unlikely that truck survived: Big cabs are typical used by long haulers and those folks have a big priority on gas milage. Then you have the issue getting parts. After some years this gets problematic. You don't want to wait two weeks until a nowadays rare replacement shows up.
@ltd4all
@ltd4all 3 жыл бұрын
@@ciddax754 European trucks are COE due to European truck overall length regulations, and the fact that many European streets are narrower, making the shorter wheelbase of the COE design more attractive, at the expense of driver safety.

The pictures that you show of Goliath make it clear that it was painted with a latex paint or a primer over wax intended to be later removed with a high pressure washer. There is overspray on the tires and some got past the cab door onto its seal at the bottom.

I think that it's entirely possible that the Peterbilt used as Goliath, being a rental unit, and the close proximity to Goliath Returns meant that Universal kept the truck and it would make sense that it was the truck -repainted - in Mouth of the Snake.. can't just be coincidence to have the black flecks of paint on the chrome mirror and interior details. the 352's was a common OTR truck back then, not as rare as one would think, there were cheap, and that was back during the first 70's fuel crisis, probably had a 3406a or b, Or a Detroit series 71 or 92 V-8 in it with a turbo kit or a super charger which was more common, as lastly a little 350 Cummins in them they also had a 9, 10, 13, or 15 speed transmission in them depending on what they were going to haul. they were also same as the K100's cept a few details such as the grill and interiors... seeing Paccar owned both Pete and Kenworth at that time. the paint used looks like was washable paint, which was common for the studios back then cause they cause wash the paint off with a pressure washer on rentals, the interiors was all the was all the same on them petes, same doors was used on all their trucks and that spot you say the rubber missing is where the door latches to the truck to the body lol. so with that evidence i would think that those 2 trucks are not the same unless they modified the air intake for goliath and changed it back when it became a blue truck. the air intakes are in different places on your photos for the 2 different trucks which the one with the chrome roof had a cat, the other one had a V8 Detroit ya can look at the air intake and know what's in them. So with that, person you shoulda talk to about that particular truck would be George Sack Sr if he is still alive, he used to buy allot of them old movie rental trucks at the auctions and use them for picture trucks in movies in the 80's and he had allot of 50's - 60's trucks just laying around his lot in aqua dulce. I used be a driver back then, and have driven many of these 352's and K100's, they was go to trucks for us bed buggers.

Single sleeper or double sleeper. It like a single bed or single sleeper for 1 driver or a queen bed for 2 people to sleep. It works like this. 1 driver drives when there done they sleep. If it's a team driver one drives the other sleeps or tries to. The purpose of the double sleeper, that's the wider cab with the queen sized bed is for those times when your waiting for a load both can sleep or if you have a passenger with you. The double sleeper was a luxury and typically not bought by fleets. It was bought by an owner operator someone who owns and drives the truck. Hope that helps non truckers understand the difference better.

Other things I noticed, Goliath has an extra air tank, 2 below the battery box and one between battery box and fuel tank. That 3rd air tank has a valve on top which makes me think it was added on for some reason. Also Goliath looks like it has 3" diameter exhaust stacks, that means it had a Detroit engine in it, Cummins or Caterpillar had 4" stacks. Goliath with the grill grates, the grates would have had to be removed to raise the cab to do any work on the engine. Also, Detroit engines were extremely unreliable back then. Either you had one that ran well or you didn't, so once they started breaking down, they soon were scrapped. If I could watch a scene with Goliath, I could tell you immediately which engine it had, Cats made a lot of knocking noises as they accelerated, as did Cummins, but Detroits idled at a higher rpm and whined to higher rpms, getting about 4 mpg which made them operable when fuel was cheap and fuel had taken a spike in 1983 which was probably why Goliath was retired from road duty to acting/prop duties. Detroits, specifically the series 71, were scrapped as they were 2 strokes (green in color, Cummins were beige, Cats yellow) and pollution non compliant, especially in CA. Hope this helps in identifying it. If someone claims to have Goliath, and it has a Cummins or Cat in it, it's probably not the original.

Hi guys hopefully someone will comment and agree.... early 70's Peterbilt handles were closer to the window... also mostly early 70s Peterbilts had a straight assistant bar. Most of the late 70s truck had the curved assistants bar. That also brought about the handle being mounted lower on the door.. just what i know.. BTW this is 100% the truck passenger skirt between wheel and fuel tank theres a fold like a 2x4 was used against the truck repainted version has the same crease thats the truck.... run its plate if its real....

You are correct. Peterbilt did not lower the door handles and add the longer grab handles until the late 70's I think the one you showed is a 77 and not a 73. Goliath is what they called a double bunk. I have a 1974 352 and my Dad was a Peterbilt salesman for 42 years. thanks for the video. Grew up watching the show and loved Goliath.

Hi Joe I'm not sure if that split in the weather seal is anything at all. Check out where the lock of the door is. The latch. It's goes in that space. It's not like it was "cut" and faulty. It's just a gap in the seal where the fitting goes. I bet if you look at any other trucks from Peter Bilt, even the shorter ones, they will all have that design to them. That said, hell of a coincidence to have two trucks of that rarer kind, with the same interiors. Let's hope the rental company get in touch, or someone knows. of them from back then. Cheers.

There is production logic there however: when looking at passenger side shot of the truck in blue, notice the ENTIRE chassis is black. Fuel tanks & all. Side shots of it in gray show the fuel tanks where natural aluminum immediately under the gray (over spray at ends & wash at fuel fill). Blue one has aluminum tube type wheels, gray has 2-hole Budd (tubeless) steel wheels. Those wheels where an expensive change then as now. The thing I wonder about is the spotlights above the doors, unsure if it was an option on all trucks.

Excellent, superb, well done (quote)! I was nine in 1984, when I first saw "Mouth of the Snake", and my first thought when I had seen the truck was: "Hey, that's Goliath repainted!" Ok, it was just the idea of a child, but had anyone here got the same thought of mine when he or she first watched "Mouth of the snake"? Second idea: no way to relate Goliath to any of the trucks seen in "Ten wheel trouble"? Anyway, poor truck: from two of the greatest episodes ever, to one of the worst! 😅😅😅 Oh, there's another thing the two trucks shared, if I'm not wrong: the "Rocket launcher" button, which will be reused also in "Buyout" which shared the missile launching scene with "Mouth of the snake". Ok, that's a little complicated... 😅😅😅😅

It stands to reason that after the show was over, Goliath would've undergone a transformation from the Goliath truck back to a standard Peterbilt truck. It stands to reason that Universal Studios would've had to remove all the exterior features of Goliath and have it returned to the rental agency. The truck itself probably had to be repainted and repurposed into a standard hauler instead. Much as they did with the Bell 222b that became the famous jet chopper known as Airwolf.

If you look at 14:49 there's a bit at the top of the door frame where the black paint is missing, and it shows a line of the original blue paint. At 14:55 and 17:04 you can see the exact same line on the blue truck. Also, on the right side of the truck at the part where the original single cab would've ended, you can see the same small dent on the bottom edge of the cab on both Goliath and the blue truck.

i'm gonna say that wherever the truck is now, the grate and bumper are long gone and the screw holes are likely full of bondo. If you want to find the truck, the things you are going to look for are 1: a Big Bunk 352 with twin stacks that are flat top stacks with no rain caps (this could have been changed but likely is still the same as it was) 2: very small fuel tanks, seeing a big sleeper truck with tanks that small is very odd so not many will have it. 3: the cab roof mounted air conditioner, between the horns you can see it sticking up some behind the clearance lights. (as far as i know this was optional) 4: the single mirrors on either side, often times these trucks had double or triple mirror options, Goliath doesn't (you can tell the difference because these set ups have small round mirrors mounted above/below the main rectangular one) 5: that driver's side spot light (and the ones on the back), as far as i know that's another option 6: the drivers door having that rectangular patch in it, most 352s didn't have those to my knowledge and i also don't know what it's purpose is side note, looking at 12:18, i believe that is Goliath as the stacks appear to still be painted black and it has the spotlights, as well as the roof mounted a/c unit AND, the clearance lights appear to be fogged in the same way they were on Goliath, and it has the short tanks on it. that is the same truck i have no doubt (nevermind on the black stacks) it's not hard to change the appearance of a truck when you have a lot of money, and it's really easy to repaint what's basically a brick. also, no not all 352s had the same interior, these trucks were almost completely customizable back then

Actually I Pose a Question What is the probability of a Peterbuilt to be Missing its Badges in all the Same Spots? There should be an Oval that says Peterbuilt just below the front corner of both Doors as well as on Front Cab air intake just above the radiator. Second the missing rubber on the door is from the door catch lever that is how the door stays shut. 3rd if you look at the side view of both tractors passenger side, bottom edge of the Painted Body panel almost directly in the middle of the 2 side doors 5:42 and 12:34 there is an upward Dent in the Edge of both Tractors. Pretty suspect if you ask me

That truck is a 77. The low door handles and the A/C evaporator give it away. A 73 would have had the door handles higher up, a taller A/C evaporator, and windows on the back of the cab. Anything 78 and later had the A/c evaporator behind the grill, and 76 and older had the high door handles.

9:29 There appear to be some scraping marks/weld marks around those screw heads---did they grind the screws down to be flush with the metal? Or did they actually weld that front piece on to the cab? Also, the placement of the grate/medieval-looking front bumper is in line with what you were saying earlier in the video about product placement. Peterbilt would have wanted their corporate badge on the front to be covered up in some way, so as not to become associated with a "bad guy" vehicle. 16:30 or thereabouts, the comparisons between "Goliath" and "Mouth of the Snake": I can't speak for anybody else, but I'm reasonably convinced that the truck was reused. In addition to your analysis---which is solid, by the way, well done---I would point out to you the timing of the two episodes and the shiny quality of the paint on the truck during "Mouth of the Snake". You're seeing "Goliath" alright---it's "Goliath" with a fast repaint job. John Schneider, of "The Dukes of Hazzard", has recounted how the vehicle staff on that show worked at an unbelievably fast pace, salvaging Dodge Chargers after they got smashed up during filming and turning them around to be reused in later shots or later episodes. "Knight Rider" is roughly the same era of TV filmmaking; it would follow that they would use the same quick turnaround to save costs on vehicle usage. I suspect that while "Goliath" was not originally part of the Universal vehicle fleet, it was probably purposely acquired for KR and then kept around in case they needed a semi for something.

Thank you Knight Rider Historians for the awesome videos especially the Goliath videos.👍👍 On the episode Mouth Of The Snake you can clearly see the California license plate. So check the DMV to cross reference the truck location or last owner. You said I in a previous video the studio use the real license plate on the flag semi. So with that said they may did the same on Mouth Of The Snake?? And for the Flag Semi Trailer on episode where Kitt gets destroyed in Chicago in the abandoned warehouse District. Bonnie running down the side of the trailer to help Michael and Kitt. If you screen shot it at the back doors of the trailer, you can clearly see the California license plate on the right side. You may be able to track down the trailer, vin, and the last owner from the DMV. If this doesn't work in the first season of Knight Rider you can clearly see the license plate on the rear of the Flag trailer. When it's parked on the side of the road in the dirt. Hopefully this help you find Goliath and the Flag Semi Trailer. Knight Rider Super Fan!!👍👍
