I'm refreshing learning French so this is helpful. I don't have anyone to speak with in this town yet. I found that when visiting Paris, France in 2000 and 2019, my understanding and speaking improved immensely after about a week of listening, observation, study, and engaging with true French people. I just let go and went with the flow. When mispronounced a word, a French native help with corrections. I went from anxiety to excitement.

The Bible is a great resource. It's been translated to most languages. My books are Genesis one and Revelations. There are many basic verbs and terms in each. Revelations has city names, so in any language you will at least feel like you know what is being discussed even if you do not understand the words in between

I have learned to almost "turn off" my brain when I speak in another language to someone. If my brain is "on", so to say, then I'm forming the sentence in English first, and mentally translating, then trying to remember the sentence in order to say it. But then I forget the second half of the sentence because I'm trying too hard. But when I turn my brain "off", I stop thinking about what I want to say in English, and then I start actually speaking the language (that is, what I know) with ease. I make mistakes, but for the most part, it just comes, and in my experience, others really don't care... they're just happy that a foreigner is trying to learn their language and trying to talk to them. Anyway, I can't tell you how many years of language study it took me to figure this out (the better part of 20 years, and now you know in much less time!). What's also really interesting is that when the mind is processing in the other language, I've had the experience of temporarily not being able to understand English. It's really weird. I've heard others relate the same experience.

I have found that doing things like playing video games in my target language, listening to music, watching movies, reading, stuff like that has been immensely helpful for me. And when I do these things I go full immersion. No english subtitles or the like. I've noticed it's helped with my "hearing" if things sound right even if I don't consciously know for sure. If I really need to look something up along the way I will, but for the most part I just keep going if I didn't 100% understand every word and that has really helped my vocabulary because eventually I'll just hear or read something enough times I just figure it out.

The reading is what propelled me to a new level. Get the book in English(mother language) and your target language. Read the page/section/chapter in English so you know the content then read it in your target language. The go to series for me is Harry Potter. It is 1,000,000+ words. It is made for adolescents so most of the language, especially the first 2-3 books, are at an accessible level for learners.

En el principio de mi viaje en septiembre 2023 yo comprado una biblia bilingue porque yo soy cristiano y yo decidió para añadir el idioma a mis estudios bíblicos. Esta manera ha permitidome para crecer exponencialmente en mi viaje porque he hecho el idioma un parte de mi vida diaria como un cristiano con la biblia, música de la adoración, libros cristianos, la oracion, etc.. Salut ! I'm a French native and live in California, I tutor French and I fully agree with you! I always make sure my student and I find one or two things they really love, so our "lesson" or "talks" etc will always revolve around them/these topics/hobbies. Also, a big thing IMO is to be in motion, especially with males, even just walking. Boys and men learn better in movement. Hiking, biking, whatever you can do with your student will boost their learning experience big time! My other tip is to find an online radio or podcast (audio) in the goal (⚽see what I did there? haha, j'adore le foot !) language and play even when around the house doing dishes or whatever, as much as possible, have it play in the background so your brain picks it up over time (consistency!). Im currently learning Italian, Spanish, french and dabbling in arabic. Im finding learning the 3 together (i do 40 mins to hour each language at night) is easier for me because not only am i keeping my mind in active mode, lots of words are similar and ones that are opposite help me remember the meaning easier for others. I did previously know a bit of french and reasonable Spanish, bit of greek aswell but when i started Italian it was like i already knew it, i find it really easy to speak, and to learn it seems my brain likes it, then i found out knowing french first is what helped so i decided to learn all 3 together, since i get easily bored and distracted. This has helped immensely. Im hoping to be confident in basic conversation in 6 months in all 3. If i achieve it i will continue to learn and definitely complete more

I have been “picking up” on Türkçe…but only through spices, seasonings, and the odd word here & there. I live in Turkiye and I’ve tried to learn on my own. I know how to pronounce the alphabet, the letters, but find syntax keeps me hesitant. I watch movies in Türkçe with Türkçe subtitles. Not knowing the words makes it FEEL nearly impossible to comprehend word order which sets up a road block to actually learning the language. Is learning a list of words first, then hearing them in sentences the key to understanding word order and the spoken word? I suppose my real question is what is the best way to start learning?

Cringiest comment I’ve seen in a while.
@busingyefavour9477Ай бұрын
Can I ask an honest qn. Why do you think he did that
@marcobarattaАй бұрын
So, let’s take a moment to unpack your comment. You start with, ‘All European languages? Really, bro?’ It’s clear you’re trying to trivialize what’s actually an extraordinary achievement. Do you realize the level of discipline, focus, and effort it takes to master multiple languages? It’s not something that happens by accident. It’s a conscious, grueling process that requires a deep commitment to growth. And yet, you reduce it to this dismissive remark, as if it’s not worth acknowledging. Then you say, ‘You must really love Europeans.’ Do you hear the assumption packed into that? You’re implying that the pursuit of knowledge-learning languages in this case-is somehow about favoritism or some emotional alignment with a particular group. Let me remind you, learning a language isn’t about picking sides or pledging allegiance. It’s about expanding your understanding of the world, engaging with diverse cultures, and improving yourself. His choice to focus on European languages isn’t exclusion-it’s personal interest and opportunity. Nothing more, nothing less. Now, ‘Too bad they don’t feel the same.’ Here, you take an entire continent-millions of people-and you assign them a collective attitude. That’s a bold and baseless generalization. But even if your statement had any truth to it, why would their potential indifference matter? Does someone’s pursuit of excellence lose its value because it isn’t universally applauded? No. The pursuit itself is the reward. He doesn’t need validation from anyone, let alone a sweeping caricature of a continent. And then we get to your final point: ‘No African languages? Not even one?’ Let’s address this head-on. Why should he be obligated to include a particular set of languages just to meet your standards? Learning languages is not a political statement. It’s not a checklist to prove his inclusivity to you or anyone else. Mastery requires focus, and he’s chosen his focus. That doesn’t mean he’s dismissing other languages or cultures-it means he’s chosen a specific path right now. And frankly, criticizing someone for not doing everything is just another way to downplay what they’ve already done. So let’s be honest here: your comment says more about you than it does about him. You’ve looked at a person who’s achieved something remarkable-something that most people wouldn’t even attempt-and instead of offering respect or even curiosity, you’ve decided to try and knock it down. Why? Is it envy? A misunderstanding of what it takes to achieve something extraordinary? Whatever it is, it’s not about him-it’s about you. Here’s a thought: instead of picking apart someone else’s accomplishments, why not reflect on what you could achieve if you directed your energy differently? Because while he’s out there mastering languages, you’re sitting here trying to undermine it. And honestly, that’s not a good look.”
