immersion, immersion, immersion.... punishment for speaking english seems harsh, but I get the drive. My son did a year in Turkey. State Dept program called NSLI-Y. 7 hours a day in the Turkish high school from Day 1 followed by 3-4 hours a day in a private language school, coupled with living with a host family who had little to no English. He was fluent in 4-5 months.

Nothing beats it. Every other method is really in support of it. It still surprises me people learning languages don't factor in travel and living elsewhere in their life plans.
@TravelsWithTony Жыл бұрын
@@musical_lolu4811 so true. I spent 2+ years in Spain but working in English at Amazon. Never took a Spanish class. But I still was able to learn enough to feel comfortable in social situations and shopping in Spanish. My grammar was lacking but I made due. Being there. Using it every day in stores, at tapas bars, on the bike trails in groups etc. you have to try to always view it as fun and it will happen.

My father's first foreign language course was German at the Presidio in San Francisco back when that was an Army base and total immersion experience. He spent the 1960s as a signal interception / listening post technician at Teufelsberg in Berlin, behind the Iron Curtain. Eventually he joined the NSA as a linguist and over the course of his career added another 8 languages. I remember when he learned Turkish over the summer, and it still blows my mind. Polyglots are amazing to me.

Middlebury College is another institution which has a target language-only policy. Peace Corps is similar. As for me, I am learning Tagalog 😌 I was in The Philippines 🇵🇭 in 2022. Total immersion works. 👍

I'm going to watch this video because my wife and I are going to move there, but I'm going to learn her local dialect there that only 3 million people speak. :) I'm sure I will pick up some Tagalog over time as well, but my focus will be on the local dialect because people there hate Tagalog.
@WineSippingCowboy Жыл бұрын
Agreed 👍 In Metro Manila, I spoke in Tagalog. Pinoys there were helpful. 😃 When I traveled outside of there, the locals decided to speak English to me although they are fluent in Tagalog; they preferred THEIR language, not Tagalog. I asked why. He said 1 that they want to stick with their mother 👩 tongue because Tagalog is a 2nd or 3rd language to them and 2 some of the speakers he knows do not want much to deal with Metro Manila unless necessary. I concluded that it was local pride. He agreed 👍 Wish you well on your travel to The Philippines 🇵🇭.

@@WineSippingCowboyThanks! I already ordered a book to study Waray-Waray. I do know that people there call Tagalog "TANGalog", which supposedly translates to something like "Stupid language". They think it sounds much too harsh, Waray sounds more friendly and smooth. (Cebuano is more like a "Yo yo!"-street language to them.)

Not necessarily. Alot of native speakers can't tell you how they learned. Someone who learned your target language is a better teacher since they have experience in learning to the exact stage you want to
@petercerro Жыл бұрын
There are plenty of native speakers who are monolingual and have never learned a language themselves as adults, therefore, they're not always the best choice as tutors
@foxybrown2 Жыл бұрын
@@AceofShaq well the point i am making is that you cant even teach on Preply if you don't' know how to teach I think they screen the Tutors. This why when I am looking for a Tutor I am very Picky when I look at the resume video. If they can't speak English and the there Native language i skip right over them. most of them Introduce them selves in their Native language then switch to English or vise or versa.

Absolutely, I used to watch him years ago when he was posting funny videos speaking Mandarin in China Town in NYC. Suddenly, he published a heavily edited video claiming to learn spanish in a week and suddenly he's a language expert. He spent years in China to learn Mandarin and I doubt he knows Spanish well enough to claim fluency. Hardly, a language expert.
@bottlecap6169 Жыл бұрын
He spent a year in China, not a decade. He's been speaking it for a decade. Learning Spanish to fluency is impressive considering he did it outside of school. He has a lot of knowledge and experience with language learning techniques, and is transparent about the fact that he hasn't actually learned all these languages he does for videos - unlike most so-called polyglots I see on KZbin. Anyway, you're mentally ill and should stop obsessing over "groups" and whether people are "impressive".
@devin6272 Жыл бұрын
He lived in beijing for 1 year and yeah he learned those and why is it of course spanish? learning any language is hard why diminish someone else’s accomplishments? How many languages do you speak? Do you feel he didn’t have to work as hard because of his opportunities? really childish take of yours. He clickbait’s whatever. But to say he isn’t impressive is reductive.
